At the end of "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug", Bain hid the black arrow so that when Bard was arrested it would be safe. When Bain sees his father has escaped from prison, he leaves his sisters and the Dwarves to go retrieve the black arrow for his father. He brings it to his father and acts as the bow for his father to shoot Smaug. The arrow hits its mark and Smaug is slain.

Answer: Dale

After Smaug's attack on Laketown, the survivors gather on the banks of the lake and Bard is recognized as the one who killed the dragon. The people look to him as their leader so he leads them to Dale at the foot of the Lonely Mountain. Prior to Smaug's attack on Erebor many years ago, Dale was a thriving human city that traded freely with the fortress and the Dwarfs. Dale was abandoned after Smaug took over Erebor.

Answer: Radagast

Galadriel shows up to stop an Orc from slaying Gandalf then Elrond and Saruman appear to help her fend off the evil ghosts. Radagast shows up with his sleigh and whisks Gandalf off to safety while the other three prepare to face the ghosts.

Answer: Galadriel

Elrond and Saruman defeat the Nazgul but they re-appear when Sauron makes his presence known. At this point Galadriel turns dark and casts a spell on the Nazgul and the spirit of Sauron, forcing them to retreat into the East. Elrond wants to pursue Sauron to defeat him once and for all but Saruman tells him to take Galadriel to Lothlórien so she can recover her power, since she spent so much driving the spirit of Sauron out.

Answer: Dragon sickness

Balin tells Bilbo that Thorin has Dragon sickness and it comes from the gold. Balin has seen it before in Thorin's grandfather who was driven mad by it. Bilbo asks if the Arkenstone will make the sickness better or worse and Balin says he fears it will make it worse. Bilbo keeps the Arkenstone from Thorin to protect him from himself.

Answer: Azog

Although Azog is the main antagonist in the film, he was not so in the book. His role was expanded in the trilogy to provide continuity of the threat faced by the Dwarves. His full name is Azog the Defiler. He has vowed to wipeout the line of Durin. He kills Thorin's grandfather, Thror, at the Battle of Battle of Azanulbizar but then loses his left arm and is forced to retreat.

The feud between Thorin and Azog is a major theme of all three movies and culminates in this movie.

Answer: Tunnels dug by Wereworms

The Orcs use Wereworms to tunnel under the ground so that no one knows they are coming to attack Erebor. The Wereworms burst forth from the ground right as the Elves and Dwarves are about to do battle.

The bats bred for war show up later with the second Orc army, coming from Gundabad and led by Azog's son, Bolg. That army travelled over land not caring whether it was day or night.

Answer: Billy Connolly

Billy Connolly's voice is very recognizable as Dain. The hint refers to the fact that he is the only one of the four choices who was not a member of Monty Python. Thorin sends a raven to Dain to tell him Erebor has been reclaimed and to come help defend the fortress. Dain shows up right as the Elf army and the humans are about to attack. Right as the Elves and the Dwarves prepare to face each other in battle, the Orc army appears and everything changes.

The would-be enemies turn to face the bigger threat in the Orcs.

Answer: Thorin

Thorin leads Kili, Fili, and Dwalin to Ravenhill to attack Azog at his command post there. With their forces outnumbered, Thorin figures the only way to win is to cut off the head of the snake. Fili is killed by Azog and Kili is killed defending Tauriel.

In the final showdown between Thorin and Azog, Thorin allows himself to be mortally stabbed so that he can deliver a mortal blow to Azog. Azog dies first and Thorin is able to make peace with Bilbo before he dies.

Answer: It fell out of his pocket in the battle.

Bilbo is surprised when Gandalf tells him he knows he found the ring. As they part ways he tells Gandalf he lost it in the battle but Gandalf does not believe him. Still Gandalf allows Bilbo to keep the ring and this sets up the next trilogy "The Lord of the Rings".
