The Strange World of 'Benny & Joon' Quiz

Joon is painting an abstract picture, using her hands instead of brushes, while the Proclaimers' 'I'm Gonna Be' plays. Her brother Benny works in a garage, and she phones him at work because she has run out of her favourite cereal, Peanut Butter Crunch, and considers it to be an emergency.

He comes home to find that Mrs Smail, the housekeeper, has quit because she can't cope with Joon anymore.

You can see her name 'Juniper Pearl' written on a form at the psychiatrist's office. Benny goes to see Dr Garvey, the psychiatrist, about getting a new housekeeper, as Mrs Smail was not understanding enough. The psychiatrist tells Benny she thinks Joon needs to be in a group home with her peers, as there are no more possible housekeepers left, but Benny argues that Joon hates her peers. The psychiatrist is concerned that Joon living with Benny might not be good for either of them, but Benny explains that he is her only family.

Meanwhile, Joon is picked up by the police for trying to direct traffic and causing a hold-up in the road, and Benny is forced to miss a baseball game for which he won tickets.

Joon plays cards with Benny's friends and puts a green-haired troll doll up as a stake. Mike, one of Benny's friends, offers his cousin Sam; Sam has been living with Mike and they do not get on. Mike complains that Sam spends all his time polishing plastic forks and watching movies at night, and is illiterate. Benny is furious, but Mike goads him into accepting.

When Benny and Joon meet Sam, he is playing tunes on Mike's car. Joon had previously seen him hiding in a tree.

Sam goes to a diner with Benny and Joon and makes Joon laugh by sticking forks into a pair of bread rolls and making them dance. He accidentally hits a waitress with a bread roll and makes her drop her plates, but he catches them and plays with them until Ruthie, another waitress and former actress, tells him off.

He then makes her laugh by quoting one of her films verbatim, impressing Benny. Benny puts him up on the sofa in Joon's studio and Sam is grateful, as Mike had made him sleep under the kitchen sink. Joon sketches him in charcoal while he sleeps.

Joon says this when Benny sees Sam making grilled cheese sandwiches with an iron and is confused. Sam proves himself to be a good, if eccentric, housekeeper; Joon kicks him out because he cleaned the house, but Sam leaves a jack-in-the-box as a conciliatory gift while sitting on a post box outside. Joon wishes he could be her new Mrs Smail.

Joon writes a letter for Sam and posts it, and they go to the diner. Joon picks the raisins out of her tapioca pudding. She explains that they used to be fat, juicy grapes, but now they're twisted and had their lives stolen, and calls them 'humiliated grapes'. Both she and Sam find dancing raisins (presumably the California Raisins, as the film was made in 1993) disturbing. Ruthie, a waitress, gives them a lift when they run some errands, and Joon gets Benny two goldfish called Steven and Stephen to replace Steve, his dead goldfish.

Sam also brings one of Ruthie's films over and the group watch it. Benny has a look at Ruthie' car and offers to drive her home. Ruthie is also an apartment manager and invites Benny into her home, but Benny soon gets cold feet and goes home.

Answer: Joon has sex with Sam

Benny acts as a straight man to Sam when he does his routine. While he is out, Joon and Sam kiss, and one thing leads to another. Sam tells Joon he loves her. Joon tells him not to tell Benny that they had sex.

Meanwhile, Benny is so impressed at Sam's dancing that he asks a client who is also a talent agent to see him. The client offers to watch Sam and book him gigs around the country. Ruthie comes to see Benny at work and he tells her that he has potentially arranged an audition for Sam, but Ruthie is still angry with Benny about their failed date. At dinner, Sam confesses that he and Joon are in a relationship. Benny gets angry and throws Sam out of the house. Benny and Joon have an argument and Joon starts crying, telling Benny she hates him.

Benny goes to Ruthie's house and asks her for tapioca, explaining that it's for Joon. While he is out, Joon and Sam get a bus together. Joon becomes agitated and hears voices, and bangs on the seat in front of her. Sam tries to calm her down, but Joon starts crying and arguing with the voices. Sam pulls the cord and shouts at the driver to stop the bus. A pair of paramedics restrain Joon and she screams and lashes out, breaking a window. Benny arrives at the scene to see Joon being taken away in an ambulance, while Sam sits in the back and stares at him.

Benny goes to the hospital and talks to Dr Garvey, who tells him that Joon doesn't want any visitors, including him. As he leaves the hospital, he sees Sam and pins him against the wall, calling him an idiot.

Answer: With Ruthie

Sam moves in with Ruthie, and now has a job in the video shop. He and Benny go to the hospital, as Benny's friend Thomas works there, and they try to persuade him to let them see Joon, but Thomas warns them that he could lose his job and that Joon isn't supposed to see people. Sam wedges a door open with his hat, and creates a distraction so Benny can sneak into Joon's room. He tells Joon that there is an apartment available in Ruthie's building, and that Sam is in the building, but she does not believe him.

Thomas finds Sam being carried out by orderlies and escorts him out of the building, but shows him where Joon's room is. Sam climbs the wall and swings past Joon's window. Dr Garvey arranges to have Joon released from hospital. Meanwhile, the rope comes loose and Sam falls and injures himself.

Answer: Making grilled cheese sandwiches with an iron

Sam and Joon are now living in an apartment in Ruthie's building, and Benny visits with flowers for Ruthie, telling her his life is less complicated now. He goes to Joon and Sam's apartment with flowers for them as well, and sees them through the doorway making grilled cheese sandwiches using Sam's method. Benny lays the flowers on the ground and leaves them to it.
