Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

Gregory Peck was Audrey Hepburn's costar in the romantic comedy 'Roman Holiday', the 1953 film in which she had her first featured role. It was also the one for which she won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a BAFTA Award, catapulting her into Hollywood stardom. She played the role of a princess wandering around Rome, he the reporter who shows her around the city before she dutifully returns to fulfilling the tasks of her royal position.

In 1954's 'Sabrina', Humphrey Bogart and William Holden played two brothers vying for the affection of their family's chauffeur's daughter. Bogey gets the girl. William Holden was more successful in 'Paris When it Sizzles' (1964), when his character (an alcoholic washed-up screenplay writer) and hers (a secretary he has hired to type up a script which he has not actually written, with the deadline looming) discover that the script they cobbled together might not have been much chop, but the script they can create together with the rest of their lives just might be great. Yes, the film plays with such familiar tropes, part of its fun.

'Funny Face' (1954) saw Audrey Hepburn displaying her dance skills in a musical featuring songs from a 1927 show of the same name, but with little in common aside from some of the songs from the Gershwins. Oh yes, Fred Astaire featured in both. In the movie, he is a fashion photographer who finds his ideal model in a bookstore clerk with no interest in the world of fashion. Spoiler alert - they fall in love, and the film finishes with them singing ''S Wonderful' as they embrace, with her wearing the wedding dress from the show, in the church where they had first realised they were in love.

The 1961 adaptation of Truman Capote's novella 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' turned a rather cynical story into a romantic comedy, with the character of Holly Golightly transformed from a woman on the make into a lost waif. George Peppard played her neighbour (given the name of Paul for the film), who grows from acquaintance through friend to lover as he watches her deal with her various issues. In the novella, she turns the cat loose and heads to Brazil on her own, never getting in touch again aside from a short note; the movie ends quite differently, with the cat recovered and a kiss in the pouring rain. (This film also featured Mickey Rooney, wildly miscast as a Japanese resident of the apartment building. The less said the better.)

Cary Grant's character in the 1963 Hitchcockesque romantic thriller 'Charade' used multiple names, as the layers of his identity are revealed. By the end, we know that the charming American (Peter Joshua) who intrigued Reggie Lampert (played by Hepburn) when they met in the Swiss Alps is not really Alexander Dyle, trying to bring his brother's killers to justice. Nor is he Adam Canfield, a professional thief in pursuit of a stolen treasure. He is Brian Cruikshank, a Treasury agent trying to recover government property. A rose by any other name, as the saying goes - they plan to marry and have lots of sons who can all be named after their father. Cary Grant had previously starred in four actual Hitchcock films: 'Suspicion' (1941), 'Notorious' (1946), 'To Catch a Thief' (1955), and 'North by Northwest' (1959).

Rex Harrison reprised his stage role of Henry Higgins in the 1964 filmed version of 'My Fair Lady', with Audrey Hepburn replacing Julie Andrews as Eliza Dolittle. The producers considered Julie Andrews to be too much of a newcomer for the film; this left her free to play the title role in 'Mary Poppins', and win an Oscar. Rex Harrison, who notoriously talked his songs rather than singing them, was recorded live, since he claimed to be unable to lip-synch accurately. He was awarded an Oscar as Best Actor for the role.

Peter O'Toole may be the best actor who never won an Oscar for acting (my opinion, with many critics agreeing), but his role in 'How to Steal a Million', as an art investigator trying to assist a dodgy art dealer's daughter in retrieving a statue her grandfather had forged before the fake could be revealed was not one of the roles that earned the acclaim. However, the romantic comedy / heist film was a lot of fun, and both actors seemed to be enjoying themselves with the nonsense.

While 'Two for the Road' was not a commercial success when it was released in 1967, this nonlinear analysis of the failing marriage between the characters played by Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney has been critically recognised for its innovative structure and the performances of the two leads. Finney had previously starred as the title character in 'Tom Jones' (1963), and later became one of many actors to portray Ebenezer Scrooge (in the 1970 musical 'Scrooge') and Hercule Poirot (in the 1974 adaptation of 'Murder on the Orient Express').

In 1968, Audrey Hepburn stepped back from her acting roles, before making a comeback in 1976 as Maid Marian in 'Robin and Marian', with the inimitable Sean Connery as Robin Hood. Richard Harris also appeared, as King Richard, as did television star Ronnie Barker as Friar Tuck. The plot includes an unusual twist in the romance between the two stars, who are now significantly older than they are often portrayed.

These ten were only a handful of the stars with whom Audrey Hepburn appeared in film. Many of the listed films included other prominent actors, with only the top billed costar included in this list. And, of course, there were many more in her other movies!
