Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Elliot Yamin, who took third in Season Five, released a self-titled debut CD in 2007. What certification did it reach in the US in November 2007?

Answer: Gold

Yamin's gold certified CD peaked at number three in the U.S. Billboard Hot 200 charts and topped the Independent Album charts. The single "Wait for You" went to #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, but subsequent efforts were not as successful. Yamin, who is deaf in his right ear and diabetic, released a fourth album in 2009.

In the United States, Gold certification is 500,000 copies and Platinum is one million.
2. Bucky Covington placed eighth on Season Five, but first saw success on the Billboard U.S. Country charts in 2007. At what position did his debut single "A Different World" reach?

Answer: 6

Covington's self-titled debut also saw 2007's "It's Good to Be Us" reach number 11 and 2008's "I'll Walk" become a Top Ten. Covington released a second album in 2009.
3. Bo Bice is best known as the Season Four runner-up. While Carrie Underwood's first two albums netted multi-platinum status, nine U.S. number one country songs, and numerous awards, Bice has been lower-profile. Where did his debut album peak on the Billboard 200?

Answer: Number Four

Bice released "The Real Thing" through RCA in 2005. The gold-certified album sold 688,000 copies. His second album, "See the Light," was released in 2007 through an independent label. Among those who co-write songs are Chris Tompkins (wrote Carrie Underwood's "Before He Cheats") and A.J. Croce, son of Jim Croce.
4. What branch of the military did Season Two alum Josh Gracin serve in?

Answer: Marine Corps

Gracin did not participate in the series of post-Idol concerts with other finalists because of his Marine Corps commitment. He was honorably discharged in 2004. Gracin's 2004 self-titled debut had three Top five U.S. country hits, with 2005's "Nothing to Lose" topping the charts in U.S. and Canada. His second album, "We Weren't Crazy," had its title track achieve Top Ten status.
5. Taylor Hicks could be considered the least-successful winner in the first seven seasons of "American Idol"; did his album achieve platinum status before he left Arista Records?

Answer: Yes

Hicks released two albums independently before going on "Idol," so he was allowed to compete as he did not have a professional recording contract. His 2006 debut "Do I Make You Proud" topped the Billboard Hot 100 charts; two other subsequent singles from the Arista-labeled album were Top 20 on the Adult Contemporary charts. Hicks later left Arista to start his own label, Modern Whomp records.

His first album "Early Works," features songs from his pre-"Idol" days. "The Distance" contained "What's Right is Right," which went to number 24 on the Adult Contemporary Charts. Hicks's debut sold about 725,000 copies.

Helton released one album in 2004. Runner-up Guarini was dropped by his label after his first album flopped, appeared in the disaster "From Justin to Kelly," and was on CMT's third season of "Gone Country." Jim Verraros, best known for having deaf parents, came out in 2003. Verraros was in gay-themed comedies and independently released songs; he had success on the U.S. dance charts.
7. How many Grammy nominations did Fantasia Barrino's first two albums receive?

Answer: seven

2004's "Free Yourself" became platinum certified. 2006's "Fantasia" was gold certified. Barrino's first eight Grammy nominations came up empty: four for her debut, three for her second release, and one in a collaboration with Jennifer Hudson. Her first two albums netted eight Top 40 songs on Billboard's R&B charts and she released a third album in 2009.

Nominations:
