Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Aerosmith covered this song for the wretched 1978 film version of "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". What was the song?

Answer: Come Together

Aerosmith's version of the song was true to the spirit of the original, as opposed to most of the recordings produced for the film. As such, we cannot begrudge them their chart success (it peaked at number 23 on the U.S. charts).
2. The Beatles released this song in 1965 and later took it to the top of the American charts; Stevie Wonder took the same song to number 13 in 1971. What was it?

Answer: We Can Work It Out

By the time Stevie Wonder recorded this song in 1971, the lyrics seemed to have taken on a new meaning. With the U.S. embroiled in a seemingly endless and pointless war in Vietnam, the lyrics "Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting, my friend" sounded more like a plea for world peace and less like a couple trying to salvage their relationship.
3. The Beatles recorded this song for their very first album but never released it as a single in the UK. Another Liverpool band did, however, taking it to number two on the UK singles chart. Which song and what band?

Answer: "Do You Want to Know a Secret?" by Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas

It could be argued that the Dakotas version of "Do You Want to Know a Secret?" was superior to the Beatles' hastily recorded rendition. If so, it was the ONLY time the Dakotas outranked the Beatles.
4. Sergio Mendes and Brazil '66 took a samba-flavored version of this song to the top of the Adult Contemporary charts in the U.S. What was its title?

Answer: The Fool on the Hill

"Fool on the Hill" was also the name of Brasil '66's fourth album. The cover depicts the band superimposed over the naked torso of a woman. Guess what the "Hill" is. Sergio and company also covered "With a Little Help From My Friends" and "Day Tripper".
5. Joe Cocker's performance of "With a Little Help From My Friends" was made famous by the "Woodstock" documentary and, some 25 years, as the theme song of "The Wonder Years". Joe's cover of another Beatles' song appeared on his second studio album and was his first song to crack the American Top 40. What was the name of the song?

Answer: She Came in Through the Bathroom Window

A killer version of "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window" appears on Cocker's classic live album, "Mad Dogs and Englishmen."
6. The 1998 film "Pleasantville" featured Fiona Apple's version of this Beatles' song. What is the title?

Answer: Across the Universe

Fiona's recording of "Across the Universe", one of John's most beautiful compositions, is used very effectively in the film. It plays over a montage that closes the movie. I highly recommend both the film and Fiona Apple's recording.
7. "Got To Get You Into My Life" was, according to Paul McCartney, influenced by the Motown Sound. It seems appropriate, then, that this slick rhythm and blues band had a hit with it in 1978. What was the name of the band?

Answer: Earth, Wind and Fire

Earth, Wind and Fire performed this song in the hideous, tasteless and blasphemous cinematic monstrosity known as "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". Fortunately, Earth, Wind and Fire outclassed the film and their stylish version of "Got To Get You Into My Life" deserved its success.
8. This American diva released an album entitled "What About Today?" in 1968. Three Beatles songs--"Honey Pie", "With a Little Help From My Friends" and "Good Night"--were included on the album. Who is the singer?

Answer: Barbra Streisand

In the mid to late 60s, Barbra Streisand began to record more contemporary pop and rock songs and fewer standards and show tunes. The results were, at least as far as her Beatles' covers went, iffy. She had better results on her 1971 album, "Barbra Joan Streisand".

Here, she covered three Carole King songs from "Tapestry" and two songs from John Lennon's classic "Plastic Ono Band" LP and--"Mother" and "Love". Her version of "Love" is particularly good.
9. Within a week of the release of "Sgt. Peppers' Lonely Hearts Club Band" in the summer of 1967, this American performer opened his/her show at the London Palladium with the title track. Who was the performer?

Answer: Jimi Hendrix

Paul McCartney was in the audience for this legendary performance. Hendrix' tribute may be seen, in retrospect, as an early indication of the profound affect that "Sgt. Pepper" would ultimately have on the culture.
10. "All This and World War II" was a bizarre 1976 documentary that combined World War II footage with cover versions of Beatles' songs. Which of the following combinations of song and artist was NOT included on the film's soundtrack album?

Answer: "Strawberry Fields Forever" by Richie Havens

Richie Havens did record a version of "Strawberry Fields Forever" but it was not featured on the soundtrack for the film. The album does have some highlights--Peter Gabriel's "Strawberry Fields Forever", Tina Turner's "Come Together" and Rod Stewart's "Get Back" are my favorites.
