John Herndon Mercer (November 18, 1909 to June 25, 1976) provided lyrics for some of the best loved songs in the Great American Songbook; "That Old Black Magic", "Skylark", "Midnight Sun" and "Out of this World" being just the first that come to mind. (Did I mention Mercer is my favorite lyricist?) After his death, Johnny's widow sent a number of lyrics to Barry Manilow, who set them to music with characteristic flair and sensitivity. He first recorded "When October Goes" on his 1984 jazz album "2:00 AM Paradise Café" and "When the Meadow Was Bloomin'" on 1990's "Because It's Christmas". He gave the bundle of songs (including these two) to Nancy Wilson and produced the resulting album, "With My Lover beside Me" (1991).
