Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Why should I feel discouraged?/ Why do the shadows come?/ Why does my heart feel lonely?/ And ______________" Please select the next line:

Answer: long for heaven and home

"His Eye is on the Sparrow" was written in 1905, and was first made famous by Ethel Waters. The lyrics of the song were inspired a passage in the book of Matthew, where Jesus advised his disciples not to worry, because God cares for even the small sparrow.
2. "Precious Lord, take my hand. Lead me on, let me stand./ I am tired, I am weak, I am worn./ Through the storm, through the night:/ _________________________" What line comes next?

Answer: Lead me on, to the light

Thomas Dorsey wrote "Take My Hand, Precious Lord" as he was looking for heavenly consolation after the loss of his wife, Nettie. This was Dr. Martin Luther King's favorite hymn, and he often asked Mahalia Jackson to sing it during rallies. Jackson also sang the song at King's funeral.
3. "Wonderful grace of Jesus; greater than all my sin./ How shall my tongue describe it? Where shall its praise begin?/ Taking away my burden; ________________" Please select the next words:

Answer: setting my spirit free

"Wonderful Grace of Jesus" was written by Haldor Lillenas, who is credited with writing over 4,000 hymns. He wrote it in 1917, while he was the pastor of a Nazarene church in Auburn, Illinois.
4. "Beneath the cross of Jesus, I fain would take my hand./ The shadow of a mighty rock; within a weary land./ A home within the wilderness; __________" Which words come next?

Answer: a rest upon the way

"Beneath the Cross of Jesus" reminds us of how we might have felt if we had literally stood beneath the cross of our Savior. The few people who actually stood there, to support Him, were jeered by the crowd, as He was - yet they could clearly see Him above Him. It reminds us that when we are opposed for our faith, Jesus still stands above us and points us to God.
5. Great is Thy faithfulness, Oh God my Father/ There is no shadow of turning with Thee./ Thou changest not; Thy compassions they fail not/ ________________________" Fill in the blank.

Answer: As Thou hast been; Thou forever wilst be

"Great is Thy Faithfulness" was published in 1923. The lyrics were written by Thomas Chisolm, and show his devotion to the book of Lamentations, which tells how God's mercies are new every morning. Chisolm's health was very poor, and he had to push himself to make a living. Yet, his faith in God's provision led him to write poetry such as these lyrics.
6. "Sweet hour of prayer, sweet hour of prayer/ That calls me from a world of care/ And bids me, at my Father's throne/ _____________________" What are the next lyrics?

Answer: Make all my wants and wishes known

The words to"Sweet Hour of Prayer" were written in the 1840s, and the music was added in the early 1850s. The writer of the verses died before the music was even written, so he had no idea how popular his words would someday become.
7. "There's a church in the valley, by the wildwood/ No lovelier place in the dale./ No spot is so dear to my childhood/ ___________________" Which words come next, in this song?

Answer: As the little brown church in the vale

"The Church in the Wildwood" was written in 1857, when its author passed through Bradford, Iowa. There is actually a little brown church in that town, but it wasn't built until later. The church remains a tourist attraction today.
8. "I need Thee every hour; most gracious Lord/ No tender voice like Thine can peace afford/ I need Thee, Oh, I need Thee; every hour I need Thee/ Oh, bless me now, my Savior, ________________" What are the words that end this verse of the song?

Answer: I come to Thee

"I Need Thee" was written in 1857 by Annie Hawks. The song expresses our ongoing need to cry out to God when we need help, and reflects the words written in Psalm 27:7: "Hear, O Lord, when I cry with my voice: have mercy also upon me, and answer me."
9. "And can it be, that I should gain/ An interest in the Saviour's blood?/ Died He for me, who caused His pain./ For me; ________________" Please select the next part of this song:

Answer: who Him to death pursued

Most people believe "And Can It Be That I Should Gain" was written by Charles Wesley, around 1740. He wrote over 6,000 hymns. This is one of my personal favorites.
10. I think it's appropriate to end with a Doxology: "Praise God,from Whom all blessings flow/ Praise Him, all creatures here below/ Praise Him, above ye heavenly host/ _________________________" What are the next - and last - parts of this song?

Answer: Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost

The words to the song were written in 1674, by Thomas Ken. This song is also known as "The Doxology" (or, "Praise God to Whom All Blessings Flow"). Doxologies are short hymns of praise to God. They are used to express praise to each part of the Trinity.
