Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1907, Ada Hunington and Charles Gabriel collaborated on the hymn "Will the Circle Be Unbroken". In 1972 what country/rock band popularized the hymn and named two of its albums from it?

Answer: Nitty Gritty Dirt Band

"Will the Circle Be Unbroken" was a unique concept. Outstanding country/western artists, mainly from the 1940s and 1950s, collaborated on the album with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. The legendary and iconic Carter Family sang the title song. Other cuts were by Roy Acuff, Merle Travis, and Jimmy Martin, among others. The stated purpose was the link the early beginnings of the country/western genre to a newer wave of music.

The hymn also was recorded by solo artists such as Johnny Cash and Randy Travis. The theme is the desire to reconnect with loved ones in heaven.

"Will the circle be unbroken
By and by, Lord, by and by?
There's a better home awaiting
In the sky, Lord, in the sky"
2. Here is the refrain from a popular hymn: "And He walks with me, and He talks with me, And He tells me I am His own; And the joy we share as we tarry there, None other has ever known." If you know where He walks, you will know the name of the hymn.

Answer: In the Garden

C. Austin Miles published the hymn in 1912. The general interpretation is a soul walking with Jesus. However, the composer meant it as an Easter hymn and pictured Mary Magdalene walking with Him.

This has been often recorded, first by Roy Rogers in 1950 and later by Perry Como followed by several other artists.
3. "When the Saints Go Marching In" is one of the most recognizable hymns. In which of these musical genres are you least likely to hear it?

Answer: Chamber music

"Saints", as it is sometimes called, evolved from a spiritual to a funeral dirge, and then to a jazz classic. It has been recorded many, many times, most often as a jazz standard. One of the most popular versions is by raspy jazz singer and trumpet player Louis Armstrong.

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band in New Orleans used to have a sign that said "Requests-$1; Special Requests-$2; "Saints Go Marching In-$5" because they tired of playing it over and over.
4. An old spiritual goes: "Oh, dem ______ slippers Oh, dem ______slippers _____ slippers I'se goin' to wear Because they look so neat Oh, dem ______ slippers Oh, dem ______ slippers ______slippers I'se goin' to wear To walk the ______ street." What word is missing?

Answer: golden

This hymn has been dated to 1879 but was in existence in tradition. It was a standard of the minstrel shows era. The upbeat hymn visualizes a concept of heaven with streets of gold.
5. In the hymn "Holy, Holy, Holy", why is 'holy' repeated three times?

Answer: To represent the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost

There should be no doubt if you remember the verse:

"Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee;
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!"
6. What is name of the popular hymn which has this refrain? "This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long; this is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long."

Answer: Blessed Assurance

Phoebe Knapp wrote a melody in 1873 and asked blind hymn writer Fanny Crosby to supply the words. The result was "Blessed Assurance". Crosby was blind from birth. Rather than consider her blindness a disability, she considered it a blessing, as she could focus more on her love of God and His praise through her hymns.
7. "Morning Has Broken" was a 1931 hymn recorded by Yusuf Islam in 1972. "Morning has broken, like the first morning Blackbird has spoken, like the first bird Praise for the singing, praise for the morning Praise for the springing fresh from the word" By what name was Yusuf Islam known at that time?

Answer: Cat Stevens

He was born Steven Demetre Georgiou, changed his name to Cat Stevens for his performance name, and to Yusuf Islam when he converted to Islam in 1978. Since that time he has continued to make occasional albums but is also known for being a musician, educator, and philanthropist, and promoting peace in the world.

He was awarded the 2003 World Award, the 2004 Man for Peace Award, and the 2007 Mediterranean Prize for Peace. The recording itself was in dispute as another artist sued for omission from the credits.

9. Robert Lowry wrote "Shall We Gather at the River" in 1864. "Yes, we'll gather at the river the beautiful, the beautiful river; gather with the saints at the river that flows by the throne of God". Which film director so loved this hymn that he included it in four of his films? (Hint: He is most remembered for his westerns.)

Answer: John Ford

John Ford used "Shall We Gather at the River" in "Three Godfathers"(1948), "My Darling Clementine" (1946), "The Searchers"(1956) and "Tobacco Road"(1941). Sam Peckinpah's also used it twice in "Major Dundee"(1965)and "The Wild Bunch"(1967). The list can be extended with "Hobson's Choice" (1954),"Elmer Gantry"(1960), "Hang'em High" (1968), and "Trip to Bountiful" (1985).
10. When the Titanic broke apart and sank, what hymn does tradition tell us was being played by the musicians still on board and facing their own deaths?

Answer: Nearer My God to Thee

Wallace Henry Hartley was the leader of the eight man group that entertained on the Titanic. After hitting the iceberg, Hartley assembled his band and played up-beat music such as waltzes and ragtime tunes to boost the spirits of the passengers. Some survivors claimed the "Song d'Automne" (Song of Autumn) was the last one.

Others said it was "Nearer My God to Thee" and this is what the newspapers at the time printed, thus "Nearer" has become the tradition,
