1. Brian Wilson

Answer: Music

American musician, record producer, singer and songwriter Brian Wilson is best known for his work with the Beach Boys rock band, which he co-founded in 1961. The band was very much a family affair involving his two brothers, a cousin and a family friend as well as initially being managed by the Wilson's father Murry. Brian had mental health issues for many years but leaves a strong legacy, being one of the more significant and innovative songwriters in the music industry of that era.

He died in June 2025, shortly before his 83rd birthday.
2. Bobby Whitlock

Robert Stanley Whitlock, better known as Bobby Whitlock, was an American musician best known for his role as a keyboard player and singer with the blues and rock band Derek and the Dominos, which he co-founded with Eric Clapton. He contributed to albums by Delaney & Bonney, George Harrison ("All Things Must Pass"(1970)) and was also a songwriter, producing his own work as a solo artist using a variety of instruments. He died from cancer aged 77 years of age in August 2025.
3. Roberta Flack

Another American singer, Roberta Flack's sang folk, jazz and soul music as well as being associated with the 'quiet storm' radio format, a sub-genre of rhythm & blues which emerged in the mid-1970s. She frequently collaborated with Donny Hathaway and then Peabo Bryson, is known for her hit songs like "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" and "Killing Me Softly with His Song", and was singing into her 80s before ill-health stopped her. She died aged 88 in February 2025.
4. Leslie Charleson

If you are a fan of the TV series "General Hospital", you will be aware that an actress portraying the cardiologist character Monica Quartermaine died in 2025 aged 79. This was Leslie Charleson who portrayed the role for over 46 years, having taken the role over from Patsy Rahn in 1977. American TV has been her main platform with her appearing in episodes of dozens of other shows.
5. Loretta Swit

Loretto Swit was best known for her role as Major Margaret Houlihan, the head nurse in the TV comedy series "M*A*S*H" (1972-1983) set in a mobile surgical unit during the Korean War. She gradually transformed the role from the "Hot Lips" Houlihan of the 1970 film (portrayed by Sally Kellerman) to a more realistic person, gaining various awards and nominations along the way.

She also appeared in game shows such as "Pyramid" and numerous TV films and episodes. She died in May 2025 aged 87.
6. Val Kilmer

What actor do the films "Top Gun", "The Doors", "Tombstone" and "Batman Forever" have in common? Val Kilmer. He was eventually diagnosed with throat cancer after voice problems surfaced in 2014. Chemotherapy and two tracheotomies followed. His story is told in his 2020 memoir and the award-winning 2021 documentary "Val". He died in April 2025 from pneumonia at the age of 65.
7. Boris Spassky

Deep Blue is not recorded as having played Boris Spassky, the Russian-born chess grandmaster. He held the title of World Chess Champion between 1969 and 1972, beating Tigran Petrosian at his second attempt to gain the title and losing to Bobby Fischer in 1972, the first time an American had won. It was not until 1997 that Deep Blue won against Garry Kasparov, the world champion at the time. Spassky continued playing competitively, moved to France in 1976, became a French citizen and then returned to Russia in 2013, dying in Moscow in February 2025 at the age of 88.

The International Olympic Committee considers chess to be a sport. Physical fitness is also regarded as important, although it is more of a competitive 'mind sport'. State of mind is also important in more physical sports.
8. George Foreman

Perhaps best known these days for the fat-reducing grill bearing his name, George Foreman was a two-time world heavyweight boxing champion as well as winning an Olympic gold medal in the heavyweight division at the 1968 Summer Olympics held in Mexico City.

He turned professional after the Olympics, beating Joe Frazier in 1973 before losing to Muhammed Ali in 1974. He carried on fighting before giving up the last of his heavyweight titles in 1995, making him at 46 years of age the oldest world heavyweight champion in history at the time.

He made more money from his grill endorsement than from his professional boxing. He died in March 2025 at the age of 76.
9. Ryne Sandberg

Baseball is the sport this time and 'Ryno' the player. Ryne Sandberg was an American professional baseball player whose position was second baseman. He was with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1981 and spent the remaining 15 seasons of his Major League Baseball career with the Chicago Cubs before retiring in 1997.

Some managerial positions followed until 2015. Prostate cancer was treated in 2024 but then spread to other organs. He died in July 2025 at age 65.
10. Martin Cruz Smith

Martin Cruz Smith was an American author of mystery and suspense fiction, possibly best known for his ten novels based around the character Arkady Renko, a Russian investigator who first appeared in the 1981 novel "Gorky Park". He started writing using various pseudonyms and when he wanted to use his own name, his publisher asked him to add another name to his own to distinguish him from existing writers.

He chose a family name, Cruz. He died at the age of 82 of Parkinson's disease in July 2025.
11. Stella Rimington

Stella Rimington was a British author who used her experiences in MI5, the UK's internal security service, as a basis for her writing. She worked in all three branches of the service - counter-espionage, counter-subversion and counter-terrorism - and reached the position of Director General before retiring in 1996.

After publishing her biography in 2001, she followed up with a dozen novels, her last being published in 2025. She died in August 2025 at the age of 90.
12. Frederick Forsyth

British writer Frederick Forsyth started off as a journalist, latterly a war correspondent with the BBC in Nigeria. When the BBC wanted to recall him, he chose to resign and remained as a freelance reporter. This resulted in his first book, the non-fiction "Biafra Story" (1969). Next was the award-winning "The Day of the Jackal" (1971) about an attempted assassination of Charles de Gaulle, written because he was broke.

Many of his thrillers were best sellers and a number were adapted for film. He died in June 2025 aged 86.
