This lady was loved and respected for her concerns over those less fortunate than herself and for her efforts to bring about change and some comfort to the ill and needy in a practical and personal way. Her death in 1997, not without controversy, caused a huge outpouring of grief throughout the world.

Answer: Princess Diana

Lady Diana Spencer became Princess Diana on her marriage to Prince Charles. She soon became heavily involved in charitable works and organisations. Visiting AIDS patients and her work with the international campaign to ban land mines were among the more high profile aspects of her work.

Her involvement perhaps stemmed initially from a sense of duty, but most definitely subsequently from a sincere feeling that she could use her position to influence those who could bring about change and, indeed, she was correct in this assumption.

Establishing Singapore as a crown colony and shipping center was actually a brilliant stroke to counter the Dutch efforts to drive the British out of Indonesia. One of the best and most famous hotels in Asia (now owned by a chain) carries his name as well.

This Scottish snooker player started playing at the age of 12 and, when he turned professional at the age of 16,he was the youngest ever to do so. At the age of 21 years and 106 days he became the youngest world champion ever and he was awarded the MBE in 1994.

Answer: Jessica Tandy

She was born Jessie Alice Tandy in the year 1909 in London, England. Besides her Academy Award for the 1989 film "Driving Miss Daisy", Tandy also won a Golden Globe for the same performance and an Emmy for the television series "Foxfire". Tandy earned an Academy Award nomination for her role as Ninny in director Jon Avnet's drama "Fried Green Tomatoes", where she starred alongside fellow Academy Award winner Kathy Bates.

A few other notable movies she played in were director Ron Howard's 1985 science fiction film "Cocoon", director Matthew Robbins' 1987 comedy "Batteries Not Included", and even Paul Newman's 1994 film "Nobody's Fool". On May 9th 1990, at the age of eighty-one, she was featured in "People" magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People".

However, several years later on September 11th 1994, ovarian cancer claimed the life of this accomplished actress.

Paul Leonard Newman was born January 26th 1925, Roman Raymond Polanski was born August 18th 1933 and Thomas Sean Connery was born in 25th August 1930.

Sir Robert (Bobby) Charlton was born in Ashington in Northumberland on October 11th 1937. He signed for Manchester United (The Red Devils) as a 15 year old, and survived the 1958 Munich air disaster. He went on to win the World Cup (alongside his brother Jackie) with England in 1966, and skippered Manchester United to their first European Cup victory in 1968. He scored 199 goals for Manchester United in a career with them that saw him make 606 appearances over 20 seasons. He also scored 49 goals for England during his 106 cap international career.

He was knighted for his services to football in 1994.
