Biblical 3-letter Names - Have You Met Your Match? Quiz

A number of years ago, I compiled a quiz in standard format regarding three-letter names in the Bible. I've decided to update things and present a quiz in the match format. (Unless otherwise noted, the NKJV was used for this quiz.)

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mother of all living

Answer: Eve

Nothing like starting a FunTrivia quiz with an easy question. Scripture states Eve was the first woman and the second person, after Adam, created by God.

According to Genesis 3:20, Adam named his wife Eve because she "was the mother of all living."

Eve was the mother of at least three boys -- Cain, Abel and Seth. However, it is is believed she was the mother of a number of other sons and daughters who are not named in Scripture. For example, Genesis 5:4 states Adam had other sons and daughters but no details are given.

I find it interesting Eve's name appears as many times in the New Testament as in the Old Testament. Her name appears four times in the Bible with two mentions in the Old Testament and two in the New Testament.
2. Man who lost seven sons, three daughters on same day

Answer: Job

Job. a character in the Old Testament, is synonymous with patience and long suffering. His struggles, and his rock-solid allegiance to God, are documented in the Book pf Job.

Scripture tells of Job`s seven sons and three daughters being killed, his massive wealth disappearing and his health deteriorating to a deplorable condition. Through it all, Job remained obedient to God.

The book ends with Job's fortunes changing dramatically for the better. Job 42:12, in the NKJV, states: "Now the LORD blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning."
3. Father of Joshua (Exodus 33:11)

Answer: Nun

Using the NKJV, Nun is mentioned no less than thirty-one times in the Old Testament but little is known about him. In every instance, it simply states Josuua was the son of Nun.

It is quite possible Nun holds the record for having his name mentioned the most times in the Bible with practically no details provided about him.
4. Husband of woman turned into pillar of salt

Answer: Lot

Lot's unnamed wife was turned into a pillar of salt when she disobeyed divine orders and looked back at the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, according to Scripture.

The two cities were destroyed because of the wickedness of the inhabitants, Scripture states. Lot and his family received instructions to flee before the cities were destroyed.

However, Genesis 19:26 states Lot's wife suffered the consequences when she defied divine instructions and looked back at the the cities which were being destroyed by brimstone and fire. As a result of her disobedience, she was turned into a pillar of salt, according to Scripture.
5. Only man who was judge and high priest of Israel

Answer: Eli

Eli has the distinction of being the only person in the Bible who served as both judge and high priest of Israel. According to Scripture, he operated out of the city of Shiloh.

It was during his time the Ark of God was captured by the Philistines. 1 Samuel 4:18, states Eli fell backwards off a chair, broke his neck and died, after learning about the capture of the Ark of God.
6. Third king of Judah (1 Kings 15:11)

Answer: Asa

Asa was the third king of Judah and he definitely had some good DNA. Asa was the son of Abijah, grandson of Rehoboam, the great grandson of Solomon and the great great grandson of David.

Asa is generally regarded as a good king, but he did have his shortcomings, according to Scripture.

According to 2 Chronicles 16:12, Asa became diseased in his feet during the 39th year of his reign and "his malady was severe; yet in his disease he did not seek the LORD, but the physicians."

Asa was replaced as king by his son Jehoshaphat.
7. Son of Noah

Answer: Ham

Ham was one of three sons of Noah. The two other sons were Shem and Japheth.

According to Scripture Noah and his unnamed wife and their three sons and their unnamed wives were saved when they took refuge in a gigantic ark when the world was engulfed in a massive flood.

According to Genesis 9, Ham saw his father drunken and naked in his tent and told his two brothers about what he saw. Scripture goes on to tell of Noah cursing Ham's son Canaan.
8. King of Hamath (1 Chronicles 18:9-10)

Answer: Tou

Tou is the correct answer. In addition to being the king of Hamath, Tou was a big fan of David, especially after the Israelites defeated Hadadezer, king of Zobahhe.

1 Chronicles 18:9-10 explains things this way in the NKJV: "Now when Tou king of Hamath heard that David had defeated all the army of Hadadezer king of Zobah, he sent Hadoram his son to King David, to greet him and bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer and defeated him (for Hadadezer had been at war with Tou); and Hadoram brought with him all kinds of articles of gold, silver, and bronze."

Tou is also mentioned in 2 Samuel 8:9-10. However, in this instance, he is referred to as Toi in the KJV and the NKJV.
9. Held up Moses' hands to ensure military win (Exodus 17:12-13)

Answer: Hur

According to Scripture, Hur played a key role in a highly unusual way to enable the Israelites to defeat the Amelekites in a crucial battle.

Exodus 17:11-13 explains things this way in the NKJV: "And so it was, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. But Moses' hands became heavy; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. So Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword."

There is no such information in the Bible, but the historian Josephus records Hur was the husband of Miriam. Meanwhile, some Rabbinic sources state Caleb was the husband of Miriam and Hur was their son.
10. Advesary of the Israelites

Answer: Gog

Gog was an adversary of the Israelites who is mentioned a number of times in Scripture.

His name largely appears in the 38th and 39th chapters of Ezekiel. However, Gog is also the name of a geographical area and the name can also be found in Revelation 20:8.

On top of this, there is another man in Scripture with the name Gog. He was a Reubenite and the father of Shimei, according to 1 Chronicles 5:4.
