Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Given an ornate coat by his father Jacob

Answer: Joseph

This is mentioned in Genesis 37:3. It is the story of Joseph and his coat of many colours. His father gave Joseph the coat because loved him the most of his sons. His brothers disliked Joseph for the favouritism and his prophecies, resolving to get rid of him with the result that he was sold into slavery. The coat was returned to his father as if bloodied and torn by animals.
2. Gave David his robe amongst other items

Answer: Jonathan

This was during a time when Saul gradually became unhappy with the rising star of David which he saw as a threat to himself. Jonathan gave David his robe as a symbol of his friendship and as an honour. He also gave up his tunic, sword, bow and belt (1 Samuel 18:4). David, it seemed, could do no wrong, leaving Saul little choice but to promote him. Saul ended up plotting against David.
3. Honoured with royal apparel from King Xerxes

Answer: Mordecai

Esther 6:11 is the source for the story. Haman was planning to impale Mordecai on a pole when he came to the king seeking his consent to do this. The king first asked Haman what should be done for a man the king wished to honour. Haman, thinking perhaps the king was referring to him, suggested giving this person one of the king's robes and one of his horses then having the man led around the city by a prince proclaiming his honour.

The king ordered him to do this for Mordecai. Not quite what Haman had in mind.
4. Had a seamless tunic taken by soldiers

Answer: Jesus

John 19 tells of some of the events around the crucifixion of Jesus. In John 19:23, after the soldiers have crucified Jesus, they take his clothes to divide between the four of them. This garment is described as seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.
5. Took up Elijah's cloak at the river Jordan

Answer: Elisha

2 Kings 2 describes how Elijah was due to be taken up to heaven. Elijah asked Elisha to stay away whilst this happened; however, Elisha refused each time. Eventually the time arrived and Elijah was taken up to heaven in a whirlwind. It was then (at 2 Kings 2:13) that Elisha picked up Elijah's cloak which had fallen from him.
6. Put on royal robes to go before King Xerxes

Answer: Esther

This is an earlier part of the story involving Mordecai and Haman. Haman was plotting to destroy Mordecai and his people. At Mordecai's request, Queen Esther agreed to petition Xerxes even though she risked being put to death. In Esther 5:1 Queen Esther makes good on her commitment to Mordecai, putting on her royal robes.
7. Left a cloak at Troas with Carpus

Answer: Paul

In 2 Timothy 4 at verse 13, Paul is asking Timothy, when he visits, to bring Paul's cloak that he left at Troas along with his scrolls and parchments. Paul is imprisoned at this point, feeling abandoned by fellow missionaries and is facing execution. He starts his letter by asking Timothy to preach the Word of God faithfully.
8. A prophetic linen belt story

Answer: Jeremiah

In Jeremiah 13:1-11 the prophet is instructed to buy a linen belt, to put it around his waist whilst ensuring it is not touched by water. He is then instructed to hide it in a rock crevice at Perath and, many days later, to return and collect it. He finds it ruined.

This story has been interpreted as a prophetic warning regarding the relationship of the people of Israel and of Judah with God.
9. Wore a veil when meeting Isaac for the first time

Answer: Rebekah

This comes from the story in Genesis 24 about how Abraham sent a servant to find a suitable wife for his son Isaac. The servant travels as directed and encounters Rebekah and her family. Rebekah agrees to return with him and, at Genesis 24:65, on arriving by camel has Isaac identified to her. She promptly puts on her veil before being introduced.
10. Told to remove sandals at the burning bush

Answer: Moses

Moses is tending his father-in-law's flock at Horeb when he sees a bush on fire but not being consumed. When he approaches he is told by God to remove his sandals as Moses is standing on holy ground. This is the occasion when Moses is tasked with rescuing the Israelites out of Egypt. The sandals are mentioned at Exodus 3:5.
