Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first judge of Israel was the only judge connected with the tribe of Judah. What was the name of the judge, as per Joshua 15:17-18?

Answer: Othniel

The correct answer is Othniel, the first judge of Israel. According to the website Christiananswers.com, Othniel is the only judge mentioned in Scripture connected with the tribe of Judah. Under him the land had rest forty years.

Othniel was the younger brother of Caleb and his father was Kenash. His wife was Achsah. Othniel served for 40 years after overthrowing Cushan-Rishathaim, king of Mesopotamia; or Aram Naharaim in the NIV Bible.

Judges 3:10-11, in the NKJV Bible, states: "The Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and the Lord delivered Cushan-Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed over Cushan-Rishathaim. So the land had rest for forty years. Then Othniel the son of Kenaz died."
2. According to Ezra 2:61, the daughter of Barzillai kept her maiden name when she married. In fact, Scripture states her husband took her name upon marriage, making her the only woman in the Hebrew Bible or the English Bible to have such a distinction.

Answer: True

The daughter of Barzillai not only kept her name when she married, but her husband took her name as well, according to Ezra 2:61-62.

Here's how the passage reads in the NKJV: "...and of the sons of the priests: the sons of Habaiah, the sons of Koz, and the sons of Barzillai, who took a wife of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite, and was called by their name. These sought their listing among those who were registered by genealogy, but they were not found; therefore they were excluded from the priesthood as defiled."

Meanwhile, the NIV, gives this translation: "And from among the priests: The descendants of Hobaiah, Hakkoz and Barzillai (a man who had married a daughter of Barzillai the Gileadite and was called by that name). These searched for their family records, but they could not find them and so were excluded from the priesthood as unclean."

Scripture provides no further details. However, notes in the NIV Study Bible state Barzillai means 'man of iron.'
3. Who is the only woman to have served as Queen of Judah, as per 2 Kings 11?

Answer: Athaliah

The sordid story of Queen Athaliah is found in the 11th chapter of 2 Kings as well as the 22nd and 23rd chapters of 2 Chronicles. She was the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel (2 Kings 8:18) and she was the original 'queen of mean'. In fact, she makes Leona Helmsley look like a Girl Guide.

When her son Ahaziah died, she was unstoppable in her blood-thirsty mission to have herself instilled as queen. To this end, she killed all Ahaziah's children except Joash, the youngest, as per 2 Kings 11:1-2. (The only reason she didn't kill Joash is the fact he was placed in hiding.) In other words, she killed her own grandchildren to cement her hold on power.
4. According to Genesis 3:14-15, a creature was cursed by God, making it the only animal to have such a distinction. What was the creature?

Answer: Serpent

The serpent, of course, is the correct answer. According to Scripture, the serpent convinced Eve to eat forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden. After Eve ate the fruit, Adam followed suit.

Scripture then tells of the LORD announcing judgment on the serpent as well as Eve and Adam. Genesis 3:14-19 in the MKJV states:
"So the LORD God said to the serpent:
'Because you have done this,
You are cursed more than all cattle,
And more than every beast of the field;
On your belly you shall go,
And you shall eat dust
All the days of your life.
And I will put enmity
Between you and the woman,
And between your seed and her Seed;
He shall bruise your head,
And you shall bruise His heel.'

To the woman He said:
'I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception;
In pain you shall bring forth children;
Your desire shall be for your husband,
And he shall rule over you.'

Then to Adam He said, 'Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, 'You shall not eat of it':
'Cursed is the ground for your sake;
In toil you shall eat of it
All the days of your life.
Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you,
And you shall eat the herb of the field.
In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread
Till you return to the ground,
For out of it you were taken;
For dust you are,
And to dust you shall return.'"
5. David has the distinction of the being the only man in the Hebrew Bible and the entire English Bible who had a wife and a mother-in-law with the same name. What was the name the two women shared?

Answer: Ahinoam

Ahinoam is the correct answer. In 1 Sameul 14:50, the mother of Michal, David's first wife was called Ahinoam. This would make her his mother-in-law. She was the wife of Saul.

Then 1 Samuel 25:43 tells of David taking a wife called Ahinoam at the same time he married Abigail, who had been previously married to Nabal.

In other words, David had a wife and a mother-in-law who shared the same name.
6. What are the names of the man and woman who were involved in the only kissing incident involving opposite sexes in the Hebrew Bible, or the Old Testament of the English Bible? (This excludes the Song of Solomon in which King Solomon figuratively writes about his undying love for the unnamed Shulamite woman.)

Answer: Jacob and Rachel

The correct answer is Jacob and Rachel. Most accounts in Scripture involve males kissing other males as a kiss was akin to a warm handshake in Biblical times. In fact, the practice is still adhered to in may Middle Eastern countries.

Scripture tells of the deep love between King Solomon and an unnamed the Shulamite woman, as per the Song of Solomon. And in the New Testament, Luke 7:38 tells of Mary kissing the feet of Jesus when she anointed Him with expensive perfume. However, all the other kissing incidents in Scripture involve men kissing men. The only case in which an identified man and woman kissing in the Bible is Jacob and Rachel.

Genesis 29:10-11, in the NKJV, states: "And it came to pass, when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother's brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother's brother, that Jacob went near and rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mother's brother. Then Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice and wept."

The rest, as they say, is history.
7. Out of all the miracles performed by Jesus, His turning water into wine is one of the best known. Even though it was His first miracle, it can be said it was insignificant in relation to the many other miracles Scripture states He performed. On top of this, the miracle is found in only the Gospel of John, making it more remarkable the miracle is so well known. At what event did Jesus perform the miracle?

Answer: A wedding banquet.

Details about the miracle are found in John 2:1-12. Verses 1-3 tell of Jesus being at a wedding banquet in Cana when He was informed by His mother the hosts had run out of wine. Verses 7 and 8 tell of Jesus instructing people to fill a number of jars with water and then to draw some out and give a sample to the master of the banquet. After tasting the liquid, the master expresses surprise at how fine the wine is. In Verse 10, the master compliments the bridegroom, stating "every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!"

According to the Thompson Chain-Reference Study Bible, Cana was west of the Sea of Galilee and about ten miles north of Nazareth.
8. According to the New Testament, Jesus raised three people from the dead. However, only one of them is named. Can you name the person?

Answer: Lazarus

The correct answer is Lazarus, of course. The account of Jesus raising him from the dead is found in John 11. According to Scripture, Lazarus was the brother of Mary and Martha and he had had been dead for four days when he was raised from the dead. In fact, Scripture states Martha was not keen about the stone being rolled away from Lazarus' tomb because of concern about the "stench" from the body.

According to Scripture, Jesus raised two other people from the dead, but they are not named. The two others raised from the dead were the widow's son at Nain (Luke 7) and Jairus' twelve-year-old daughter (Luke 8).
9. Spain is mentioned in only one chapter in the entire English Bible and not at all in the Hebrew Bible. The western European country is mentioned in Romans 15:24 and 28. According to Romans 15, what worker in the early church was planning to visit Spain, although there is no record of him having done so?

Answer: Paul

The correct answer is Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles. Actually, I never knew Spain was mentioned in Scripture until I took a quiz by Cal562301. (The quiz is called Millionaire Style Bible Quiz 13.)

In his letter to the Romans, Paul writes about visiting Rome while on his way to Spain. Romans 15:24-28, in the NKJV, states: "Whenever I journey to Spain, I shall come to you. For I hope to see you on my journey, and to be helped on my way there by you, if first I may enjoy your company for a while. But now I am going to Jerusalem to minister to the saints. For it pleased those from Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor among the saints who are in Jerusalem. It pleased them indeed, and they are their debtors. For if the Gentiles have been partakers of their spiritual things, their duty is also to minister to them in material things. Therefore, when I have performed this and have sealed to them this fruit, I shall go by way of you to Spain."
10. In the NKJV, who is the only woman in the New Testament who is named and described as a 'prophetess?' (Luke 2:36)

Answer: Anna

Anna is the correct answer. According to Luke 2:36, she was a "prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher" and was "of a great age." (In the NIV, she is called a prophet.)

No one can accuse Anna of not being faithful. In fact, she was apparently as reliable as the world-famous geyser Old Faithful. Luke 2:37, in the NKJV Bible, states Anna "did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day."

After Jesus was presented as an infant at the temple by his parents Mary and Joseph, Scripture states Anna "gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of Him to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem."
