Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Scripture tells of Jesus going into the home of one of the disciples and healing his mother-in-law who was sick in bed. What was the disciple's name? (Matthew 8:14-15)

Answer: Peter

Peter is the correct answer. Details of the miraculous healing of Peter's mother-in-law can be found in Matthew 8:14-15, Mark 1:29-31 and Luke 4:38-39.

However, little in the way of details is reported about the healing in the three passages. They all indicate the mother of Peter's wife was in bed with a high fever and Jesus miraculously healed her. The unnamed woman then got up out of bed and served those who were in the house.
2. In whose home was Christ when Martha complained to Him about her sister Mary not helping her? (Luke 10:38-42)

Answer: Martha and Mary's house

Christ was in the home of Martha and Mary who lived in Bethany with their brother Lazarus, according to Scripture.

In Luke 10:38-42, details are given about Martha being busy preparing food while her sister Mary sat at Christ's feet listening to Him speak. Martha in turn asked Christ to tell Mary to help her in the work she was doing.

In Verses 41 and 42, Jesus is quoted in the NKJV as saying: "Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her."
3. From whose household did Paul learn of reports of division in the early church at Corinth? (1 Corinthians 1:11)

Answer: Chloe's household

In 1 Corinthians 1:11, Paul tells members of the early church at Corinth that he had received reports from Chloe's household about divisions between believers.

In Verse 10 in the NKJV, Paul writes: "Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment."

Little is known about Chloe as her name only appears in only Verse 11 and no where else in Scripture.

It is commonly assumed she lived in Philippi, but no one knows for certain. It's possible she lived in another community and had heard reports about division in the church in Philippi.
4. In whose home were people fervently praying for Peter's release from prison? (Acts 12:12)

Answer: Mary's house

Members of the early church were in Mary's house, praying for Peter's release from prison, as per Acts 12:12.

It must be pointed out there are a number of women named Mary in the New Testament, notably Mary the mother of Jesus and Mary Magdalene. The Mary in this case was the mother of John whose surname was Mark.

According to the account in Acts 12, the people praying for Peter's release got swift action on their request. Their prayer meeting ended up being interrupted by a liberated Peter knocking on the door after his miraculous escape from prison.
5. In whose home in Jericho were two Israeli spies given safe refuge? (Joshua 2:1)

Answer: Rahab

Rahab, a Gentile harlot, provided a sanctuary for two Israelite spies, according to Scripture. The account can be found ion Joshua 2:1-24.

The two men were commissioned by Joshua to spy out the Promised Land with particular attention to be given to Jericho. The names of the two spies is not given in Scripture.

Later, when the Israelites conquered Jericho, the lives of Rahab and her family would be spared. Her name appears in Matthew 1:5 as part of the lineage of Jesus Christ.
6. What judge of Israel pledged to sacrifice to God the first thing that came out of his house when he returned home? (Judges 11:30-31)

Answer: Jephthah

Jephatah is the correct answer. It's a bit of a long story, but in a nutshell, Jephatah made a vow to God if he was granted a military victory over the Ammonites he would sacrifice whatever came out of the door of his house first when he returned home.

Scripture tells of Jephatah scoring a miraculous victory over the Ammonites and when he returned home his daughter was the first to come out of his house to joyfully welcome him home.

Details can be found in Judges 11:29-40.
7. Who was the counsellor to David who "put his household in order and hanged himself"? (2 Samuel 17:23)

Answer: Ahithophel

Ahithophel was a counsellor to David, but ended up betraying the king when Absalom attempted to become the leader of Israel. However, Absalom refused to heed any advice given by Ahithophel and this was the beginning of the end for the royal adviser.

2 Samuel 17:23 in the NKJV tells what happened next: "Now when Ahithophel saw that his advice was not followed, he saddled a donkey, and arose and went home to his house, to his city. Then he put his household in order, and hanged himself, and died; and he was buried in his father's tomb."

Many people believe Ahithophel was the grandfather of Bathsheba. In 2 Samuel 11:3, Bathsheba is identified as the daughter of Eliam, and in 2 Samuel 23:34 Eliam is named as the son of Ahithophel. However, there is no way of knowing for certain.
8. Who asked Jesus to heal his servant who was home paralyzed, adding it would not be necessary for Christ to visit his house? (Matthew 8:5-6)

Answer: Unnamed centurion

An unnamed centurion is the one who asked Jesus to heal his servant "lying at home paralyzed, dreadfully tormented." When Jesus responded by saying he would go to his house to heal the servant, the centurion indicated he had faith Jesus could heal his servant without even visiting his home.

Matthew 8:10 in the NKJV states: "When Jesus heard it, He marveled, and said to those who followed, 'Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!'"

According to Scripture the servant "was healed that same hour."
9. What is the name of the man who was possessed by a legion of demons and made his home among the tombs of dead people? Mark 5:1-2

Answer: No name is given

No name is given for the demon-possessed man. The man is sometimes referred to as the Gadarene Demoniac as he lived in Gadarenes, on the other side of the Sea of Galilee. Others refer to him as Legion because Scripture says a legion of demons had taken up residency inside of him.

One thing is known, however, as Christ drove the legion of demons out of the unnamed man and he was made well. Interestingly, the demons driven out of the man took up residency in a large herd of pigs. Scripture goes on to state the "herd ran violently down the steep place into the sea, and drowned in the sea."

According to Scripture, the man lived among the tombs of dead people. In other words, he lived in a cemetery.

For further details, see Mark 5:1-20.
10. The following is a statement by Jesus: "In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also." In what Gospel do you find this statement?

Answer: John

The statement by Jesus about His Father's house containing many mansions is found in the Gospel of John. Just after making this statement, Christ made the famous declaration: "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me."

He made the statements while talking to His twelve disciples.

For details, see John 14:1-6.
