Things Sometimes Happen in Threes Quiz

There's a saying things happen in threes, so I couldn't resist the temptation to write a quiz on the theme. Inspiration for this installment came from Emily Filipi's book '3,285 Bible Questions & Answers'. (Bible version used is the NKJV.)

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who heard a rooster crow three times? (John 18:15-27)

Answer: Peter

For Peter hearing a rooster crow three times was the most terrible sound he heard in his life. After all, Peter was adamant he would be loyal and true to Jesus to the very end. Christ responded to Peter's claims by saying he would deny having anything to do with Him three times. Christ added on Peter's third denial he would hear a rooster crow. And sure enough, that's exactly how things happened.

Details can be found in John 18:15-27.

A similar account in Matthew 26:75 tells of Peter weeping "bitterly" when he heard the rooster crow after his third denial.
2. What prophet of God went three years naked?

Answer: Isaiah

The prophet who went naked and barefoot for three years was Isaiah. Details can be found in Isaiah 20:1-6.

Verse 2 in the NKJV states: the LORD instructed Isaiah to "remove the sackcloth from your body and take your sandals off your feet." Isaiah did just that for three years.

According to the passage, God commanded Isaiah to go barefoot and naked to illustrate the plight of the Jewish people relying on foreign alliances with Egypt and Ethiopia and not trusting on the Lord for help.
3. What king of Judah reigned for only three months? (2 Kings 23:31)

Answer: Jehoahaz

Jehoahaz's reign as king of Judah was short, lasting only three months. His story is told in 2 Kings 23:31-34. According to the passage, Jehoahaz was 23 years old when he became king and he did "evil in the sight of the LORD."

His reign came to an abrupt end when he was taken prisoner by Pharaoh Necho. The passage says Jehoahaz died in Egypt and no further details are given.

For clarification purposes, there are two men called Jehoahaz who reigned as king. The first Jehoahaz was the eleventh king of Israel, reigning for 17 years. The Jehoahaz in the question posed was the seventeenth king of Judah.
4. Who fired three arrows to send a message to his good friend David? (1 Samuel 20:18-20)

Answer: Jonathan

Jonathan fired three arrows as a way of communicating with his good friend David who was in hiding at the time. It was all part of a secret way of communicating with David who was in hiding because King Saul wanted him dead. What makes the story astounding is the fact Jonathan was the son of King Saul, a man who spent an enormous amount of time and effort attempting to remove David from the scene.

As part of the communication plan, Jonathan would send a servant to retrieve the three arrows. If Jonathan told his servant the arrows were beyond him, it would be a signal David must run for his life. However, if Jonathan told his servant the arrows were to his side, it would be a message to David that it was safe for him to return.

Scripture goes on to tell of David getting a message his life was still in danger and he should flee.
5. What author of a New Testament book wrote about three quarts of barley costing a denarius?

Answer: John

John wrote about three quarts of barley costing a denarius in Revelation 5-6. The verses tell of a scarcity of food after a third seal was broken, as per his vision on the island of Patmos.

Verses 5 and 6 in the NKJV state: "When He opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, 'Come and see.' So I looked, and behold, a black horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, 'A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; and do not harm the oil and the wine.'"

Research I have done indicates there's no way of accurately stating in today's dollars how much three quarts of barley for a denarius would be. However, the passage is in regards to a time of famine and war and obviously the price was extremely high.
6. Who was visited by wise men from the East bearing three gifts?

Answer: Baby Jesus

Baby Jesus, of course, received three gifts -- gold, frankincense and myrrh -- from the Magi who travelled from the East to the Holy Land. It is generally assumed there were three Magi, but no exact number is given in Scripture.

Part of the reason for the belief there were three Magi is the fact there were three gifts given to Baby Jesus. In other words, it is assumed there was one gift from each Magi.

See Matthew 2:9-10 for details.
7. Who prophesied about the consequences of three transgressions of Gentile nations?

Answer: Amos

Amos was a prophet of God who prophesied about three transgressions of six Gentile nations -- Damascus, Gaza, Tyre, Edom, Ammon and Moab -- resulting in severe punishment for the people.

The prophecy is contained in the first and second chapter of Amos.

To give you a taste of the prophecy, here's what Amos 1:3-5, says about Damascus: "Thus says the LORD: 'For three transgressions of Damascus, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, because they have threshed Gilead with implements of iron. But I will send a fire into the house of Hazael, which shall devour the palaces of Ben-Hadad. I will also break the gate bar of Damascus and cut off the inhabitant from the Valley of Aven, and the one who holds the scepter from Beth Eden. The people of Syria shall go captive to Kir,' says the LORD."

Scripture states the five other Gentile nations face a similar fate.

Amos was a sheepbreeder who lived in Tekoa. The Book of Amos is one of 12 books in the Minor Prophet section of the Old Testament.
8. What prophet stated he dismissed three shepherds in one month?

Answer: Zecchariah

Zechariah, a prophet of God, is the correct answer. In Zechariah 11:8 in the NKJV, the prophet states, "I dismissed the three shepherds in one month. My soul loathed them, and their soul also abhorred me."

No one knows for certain. but it is generally believed Zechariah was making reference to the leaders of Israel not caring for the people who were basically a flock of sheep.

The identity of the three shepherds is not known as well. However, some believe it is in reference to the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Herodians.
9. Who was the talented craftsman who created three bowls for the tabernacle? (Exodus 37:1 and 19)

Answer: Bezalel

Bezalel was an extremely talented craftsman. In Exodus 31:5, the LORD tells Moses work on construction of the tabernacle would be by Bezalel. The verse, in the NKJV, states in part: "See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. And I have filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship."

The three bowls which were part of the tabernacle are described in detail in Verse 19: "There were three bowls made like almond blossoms on one branch, with an ornamental knob and a flower, and three bowls made like almond blossoms on the other branch, with an ornamental knob and a flower - and so for the six branches coming out of the lampstand."
10. Who was one of three governors appointed over the Persian empire by Darius? (Daniel 6:2)

Answer: Daniel

One of three governors, or vice-regents, appointed by Darius to rule over his kingdom was Daniel. According to Scripture, Darius was impressed with Daniel and gave him considerable power.

Daniel 6:1-2 in the NKJV explains things this way: "It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom one hundred and twenty satraps, to be over the whole kingdom; and over these, three governors, of whom Daniel was one, that the satraps might give account to them, so that the king would suffer no loss. Then this Daniel distinguished himself above the governors and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him."
