Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. sphenoid
Answer: Head
The sphenoid bone is part of the cranium, located at the base of the skull, behind the eyes, forming part of the eye socket. It acts as a keystone bone, connecting many other skull bones, helping to protect the brain and supports the pituitary gland.
2. occipital
Answer: Head
The occipital bone is also part of the cranium, and can be found at the back and base of the skull. It protects the occipital lobe of the brain and contains the foramen magnum for spinal cord passage.
3. vomer
Answer: Head
The vomer is one of the unpaired facial bones of the skull, located at the midline of the nasal cavity, forming part of the nasal septum. Its function is to separate the left and right nasal passages.
4. mandible
Answer: Head
The mandible is the only movable bone of the skull... the lower jaw. It supports the lower teeth, and enables chewing and speech.
5. sternum
Answer: Torso
The sternum, or breastbone, is the long, flat bone at the center of the chest, forming the front of the rib cage (anchoring the ribs with cartilage). Its job (together with the rib cage) is to protect the heart and lungs.
6. vertebra
Answer: Torso
The vertebral column, or spinal column, consists of 33 vertebrae, divided into five sections:
Cervical spine: 7 vertebrae in the neck
Thoracic spine: 12 vertebrae in the mid-back
Lumbar spine: 5 vertebrae in the lower back
Sacrum: 5 fused vertebrae, forming a single bone
Coccyx: 3 to 5 fused vertebrae, forming the tailbone
Vertebrae protect the spinal cord while also providing structural support and flexibility.
7. sacrum
Answer: Torso
As noted, the sacrum is actually five vertebrae that have fused together into a single bone, located at the base of the spine, between the hip bones. It connects the spine to the pelvis and supports weight transfer from the upper body to the legs.
8. coccyx
Answer: Torso
Like the sacrum, the coccyx, or tailbone, is a bone made from fused-together vertebrae, and extends below the sacrum. It provides attachments for ligaments and muscles, and supports a sitting posture.
9. humerus
Answer: Arms & Hands
The humerus is the longest bone in the upper body, one in each upper arm, extending from the shoulder to the elbow. It serves as an anchor for many muscles that move the shoulder and forearm.
10. radius
Answer: Arms & Hands
The radius works with the ulna for forearm movement and wrist rotation, extending between the elbow and the wrist, and connecting on the lateral (thumb) side.
11. scaphoid
Answer: Arms & Hands
The scaphoid is located in the wrist, and is one of the carpal bones near the thumb. It stabilizes the wrist; aids in hand movement.
12. trapezium
Answer: Arms & Hands
The trapezium is one of the eight carpal bones in the wrist, located at the base of the thumb. It allows for thumb mobility for gripping and precision.
13. femur
Answer: Legs & Feet
The femur is the longest bone in the body, found in both legs in the thigh, between hip and knee. It's job is to support body weight, and it enables us (with the remainder of the bones in our limbs) to walk, run and jump.
14. fibula
Answer: Legs & Feet
The fibula, together with the tibia, make up the lower leg from the knee to the ankle. The tibia is on the lateral side (outside) of the leg. Together, they provide ankle stability and muscle support.
15. calcaneus
Answer: Legs & Feet
Also known as the heel bone, the calcaneus bears one's weight while standing and walking, and is where the Achilles tendon attaches.
16. navicular
Answer: Legs & Feet
The navicular is part of the midfoot, on the medial side near the arch. Its job is to help maintain the high foot arch and to aid in weight distribution.
