Five Men in a Police Lineup Trivia Quiz
When 'the usual suspects' are brought in for a police lineup, it triggers a new criminal partnership between the five men in question. But not all is as it seems, and a criminal mastermind is pulling all the strings. Do you remember the five characters?
The events of "The Usual Suspects" as it is presented in the film is being told by one of just two survivors of a deadly explosion and fire on a pier that killed 27 people. Customs agent Kujan interviews one of the survivors, pressuring him to reveal the events that led up to the massacre. As he does, the survivor reveals details of the five men who came together in a police lineup six weeks prior.
The character of Dean Keaton was portrayed by Gabriel Byrne. As the story progresses, we are given two viewpoints of Keaton - one from the story being told by the survivor of the 'final heist', and the other from the speculations of the interviewer - Agent Kujan - who thinks that Keaton was the ruthless mastermind behind everything.
2. ex-cop
Answer: Gabriel Byrne
In the course of the story, the audience learns that Byrne's character, Dean Keaton, was a disgraced ex-NYPD police officer who had been convicted of multiple crimes, including murder and fraud. His criminal credibility was further enhanced amongst his 'peers' with his having served time at Sing Sing, where he purportedly also killed three inmates.
3. leader
Answer: Gabriel Byrne
Byrne's character Dean Keaton seems to be respected by the other criminals in the crew, and he takes charge of planning and the execution of their operations. Early in the film, Keaton is also seen making plans for a legitimate business with his girlfriend, indicating a desire to leave his criminal past behind.
But when the police humiliate him in the lineup, he agrees to join the others in their plans, and in short order, his charisma and experience bring him into a leadership role.
4. McManus
Answer: Stephen Baldwin
Stephen Baldwin aptly portrayed the volatile and violent character of Michael McManus. While certainly not the leader of the group, McManus is the one to initially suggest the five 'usual suspects' collaborate on a heist involving corrupt cops escorting an emerald smuggler.
5. sunglasses
Answer: Stephen Baldwin
Stephen Baldwin works hard to portray McManus as a toughie, and part of that image includes the wearing of sunglasses. Throughout the movie (and even during the police lineup), McManus is almost always wearing his shades, to the point that it acts as one of his defining characteristics.
6. trigger-happy
Answer: Stephen Baldwin
Baldwin's character McManus demonstrates multiple times during the film that he is ready to choose violence over other options. Even after the mysterious Keyser Söze's representative (Kobayashi) appears and informs everyone that they have each wronged Söze and must now work for him, McManus is skeptical holds a gun to Kobayashi's head before being convinced.
His ready violence is punctuated with humour, showing just how comfortable he is with killing. In one instance he prepares for a gunfight, singing, "Old McDonald had a farm, E-I-E-I-O. And on this farm he shot some guys. Ba-da-bip, ba-da-bing, bang-boom."
In the end, McManus' violent tendencies did not help him, as the mysterious Keyser Söze kills him during the job at the pier.
7. Fenster
Answer: Benicio Del Toro
Benicio Del Toro brought to life the eccentric character of Fred Fenster. Compared to the others of the five 'usual suspects', he is suave and stylish. He also appears to have had a prior association with McManus, and early on he helps his volatile colleague convince the others to join forces on their first heist.
8. fedora
Answer: Benicio Del Toro
Del Toro's Fenster stood out as the tallest and most 'exotic' of the criminal crew, with a bright red shirt and black suit, complete with fedora. His look brought out a vintage criminal vibe, hearkening back to the style of black-and-white noir films.
9. mumbler
Answer: Benicio Del Toro
Benicio Del Toro made a creative decision to speak with a thick accent and essentially speak gibberish at times, adding to his exoticism, albeit in a bit of a humourous way, as it becomes a running joke... at least until Fenster became the first of the crew killed as an example by the mysterious Keyser Söze.
10. Hockney
Answer: Kevin Pollak
Kevin Pollak played the part of Todd Hockney, and the actor's comedic background helped establish the sarcastic character to great effect. Hockney is also quick to question the motives of the other four criminals as they decide to enter into a collaboration for the gem heist.
11. mechanic
Answer: Kevin Pollak
In addition to his criminal moonlighting, Pollak's character Hockney holds a day job as a mechanic; skills which made him a useful member of the team for technical thinking and problem-solving, if not only for his willingness to break the law with impunity.
12. explosives
Answer: Kevin Pollak
Hockney's skill as a mechanic notwithstanding, he proves his worth in the crew as an explosives expert, which comes in handy for the final gig that Keyser Söze (via Kobayashi) commissions the crew to do. Unfortunately for Hockney, Söze's ultimate plan included the elimination of the members of the crew, and the mechanic/explosives expert does not survive.
13. Verbal
Answer: Kevin Spacey
Kevin Spacey won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Roger "Verbal" Kint in "The Usual Suspects". Throughout the movie narrative - which is being told by Kint in an interrogation with Customs Agent Dave Kujan - he presented himself as an unassuming, mild-mannered, somewhat scatterbrained member of the crew.
His nervous talkativeness earned him the nickname Verbal, which is shown in great effect in the interview with Kujan (and throughout the story narrative).
14. cerebral palsy
Answer: Kevin Spacey
Another aspect of Spacey's role as Verbal Kint is acting as though he was suffering from cerebral palsy. Kint's physical limitation (including a foot that is very twisted out of proper position) added to the impression given of being non-threatening, which is the key to the whole film and the role that Kint was playing within the crew.
15. Keyser Söze?
Answer: Kevin Spacey
As Roger "Verbal" Kint, Kevin Spacey does a masterful job of telling a plausible tale about the crew of usual suspects, how they came together, how they were co-opted by Kobayashi on behalf of the mysterious (and ruthless) Keyser Söze, and how it led to the seeming disastrous fire at the pier and the deaths of the other members of the crew.
Kint is the consummate unreliable narrator, which becomes blatantly evident at the end of the film, when Agent Kujan realizes after Kint's departure that nearly every aspect of the unassuming criminal's story came from items and words visible within his own office. Was any of the story true? Did Keyser Söze even exist?
As Kint leaves the interview, we see his shuffling gait change into a normal one, and he enters a car being driven by the man known as Kobayashi. The question is left for the audience... who was (is?) Keyser Söze? Was it "Verbal" Kint? Was it Kobayashi? Different theories exist those two possibilities, as well as others. Suffice it to say, the veracity of the whole story, and even the characters of all the other usual suspects cannot be truly known.
