The original "Mario Party" came out in 1998 for the Nintendo 64, and featured just six playable characters: Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Yoshi, Wario, and Donkey Kong. In the game's story, Mario and his friends have a party to figure out who should be the 'Super Star,' but then Bowser and Bowser, Jr. show up to challenge for the right to compete. In the standard mode, up to four characters can play, taking turns as they navigate the game board. The game includes four game boards with eighty minigames available.

"Super Mario Party" was a highly successful release, becoming the top-selling title in the "Mario Party" series, and one of the top ten games developed for the Switch.
