Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On September 29, 1974, the Buffalo Bills took on the New York Jets. In this game, the Bills set a game record for doing which of the following?

Answer: Never completing a pass

Buffalo quarterback Joe Ferguson attempted only two passes in the game, and neither were caught. Jets quarterback Joe Namath was 2-for-18 for only 33 yards. It was not a snow-blowing day with the temperature being a mild 64 degrees at game time. The Jets rushed for only 106 yards, and the Bills for 223. Buffalo won this real snoozer of a game, 16-12.
2. In 1966, the Dallas Cowboys pummeled quarterback Ron Smith during a game, and the Cowboy defense sacked him a record 12 times. Their only score was an 11-yard pass to Willie Asbury from Smith. Which team did this bruised quarterback play for?

Answer: Pittsburgh Steelers

Smith lasted only two seasons in the NFL. His rookie season was with the Rams in 1965, then he walked away from the game after his Steeler season. The Steelers saved some face by sacking Cowboy quarterback Don Meredith five times in this game also. The Cowboys won the game 20-7, then went on to the playoffs but lost to the Packers.
3. The Los Angeles Rams set a record in 1966 by attempting 49 field goals throughout the season. Which team in the 1940s set a record by not even attempting one field goal in an entire season?

Answer: Chicago Bears

The Bears went through the entire 1944 season without really needing the foot services of kicker Pete Gudauskas. Pete was not injured, and still went 36-for-37 in extra points. The Bears went 6-3-1 for a second place Western Division finish.
4. Which NFL team set a record in 1974 by winning 27 consecutive home games?

Answer: Miami Dolphins

Miami won 47 games from 1971-1974, with 27 of those being consecutive home game wins. Head coach Don Shula had the helm of the team while Bob Griese took the snaps. Larry Csonka was handed the ball and Paul Warfield's hands came in from the air. In those seasons, the Dolphins had season records of 10-3-1, 14-0, 12-2, and 11-3, respectively.

In those four seasons, Miami won their division in each season and made three Super Bowl appearances.
5. Ironically, two NFL teams in 2004 finished last in their respective divisions, only to come back and win their divisions in 2005. Which two teams were these?

Answer: Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Both the Bears and Bucs finished with 5-11 records in 2004, earning them a last place finish in the NFC North and the NFC South. Both teams finished with identical 11-5 records in 2005 to both win their respective divisions. The Pittsburgh Steelers went on to win it all in Super Bowl XL.
6. In a 1943 game, the Green Bay Packers were all over the Detroit Lions. The Packers set a NFL game record by accomplishing which of the following?

Answer: Intercepted nine passes in the game

On October 24, Lion quarterbacks Frankie Sinkwich and Chuck Fenenbock technically completed 21 passes in the game, but nine of those were caught by the Packers. Green Bay won the game 27-6. Neither team won their division, and the Bears won the NFL Championship.
7. In 1942, the Chicago Bears set a NFL team record by leading the league in rushing yardage in four consecutive seasons. Which 1980s team tied that record in another four consecutive seasons of leading the league in rushing?

Answer: Chicago Bears

With Mike Ditka at the helm of the Bears, Chicago fans experienced some great seasons in the 1980s. They had Willie Gault with his receiving hands, Jim McMahon taking snaps, and Walter Payton carrying the ball. The Bears tied their own 1940s record from 1983-1986, while winning the 1985 season's Super Bowl against the Patriots.
8. Which early NFL team set a record in the 1920s for shutting out their opponents 11 times in a season?

Answer: Pottsville Maroons

The Maroons went 12-2-2 in the 1926 season, and they finished in third place of 22 teams. The Frankford Yellow Jackets won the championship with their 14-1-2 record. The Maroons' franchise existed from 1925-1928, then moved to play in Boston as the Boston Bulldogs in 1929 before the franchise went defunct.
9. The 1981 Baltimore Colts were a dismal team under the final season of head coach Mike McCormack. The team set many team records in the season, but not records that they would want to be remembered by. Which of the following NFL records was one that they did not set in that season?

Answer: Most rushing yards allowed in a season

The Buffalo Bills owned up to the record of allowing the most rushing yards in the season in 1978. While the Bills were used to being on the offensive rushing side with O.J. Simpson for many years, the Bills were now on the other end. It was the only team record that the Bills took in the season.

The 1981 Colts allowed 406 first downs, 533 points, 68 touchdowns, and allowed the most total yards with 6793. The Colts finished the season at only 2-14, and moved to Indianapolis three seasons later.
10. This 1984 NFL team's defense went insane by setting a NFL season record by sacking their opponent's quarterbacks 72 times. Which team was this?

Answer: Chicago Bears

The Bears' defense made head coach Mike Ditka proud in 1984. Richard Dent led the team with 17.5 sacks, Dan Hampton had 11.5, and Steve McMichael had 10. Their defense also caught 21 interceptions in the season. The defense and their 10-6 NFC Central Division record helped them to win the division.

They went on to lose the Conference Championship game to the 49ers, but would hang in there the following season to win Super Bowl XX.
