5. NAME THE SPORT - In which sport is a prolate spheroid used to play?

Answer: American football

A prolate spheroid is a three-dimensional object which is roundish but with its polar axis greater than its equatorial diameter. Probably the best-known example is an American-rules football. Unlike the round balls used in other sports (basketball, tennis, golf, water polo), a shape of a football is generated by an ellipse revolving around a diameter. Prolate spheroids are those in which the axis of rotation is the major axis of the ellipse.

A football experiences less drag than a round ball (when properly thrown in a spiral pattern).

Other prolate spheroids are submarines, rocket ships, and the human testis. A testis typically measures 3-5 centimetres on its long axis and 2-3 centimetres on its short axis. See generally "What Do a Submarine, a Rocket and a Football Have in Common?" Scientific American, 8 Nov 2010.
