Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many batting titles did Pete Rose win?

Answer: 3

Pete earned 3 titles in his career with his stellar 1968 and 1969 seasons, and another in 1973 (all with the Cincinnati Reds). In 1968, he hit a .335 batting average, a metric only beaten by his 1969 numbers, where he batted .348. And in 1973, Rose set a career best with a sterling 8.3 WAR. He retired in 1986.
2. What famous pitcher's quote was, "Hitting is timing. It's the pitcher's job to upset the timing"?

Answer: Warren Spahn

The immortal Braves pitcher said this in Milwaukee in 1954. This would have been a decade after he spent three years in military service, preventing him from playing in the MLB. Nevertheless, Spahn had a very productive career. In 1941, his lone pre-military season, he only appeared in four games. From 1946 on, Spahn turned a prolific career that lasted until 1965.

In total, he won 363 games and had a very sturdy 3.09 career ERA.
3. What was the W-L record of Mariner's pitcher Jamie Moyer in 1991, his only season as a Cardinal?

Answer: 0-5

Moyer had a lengthy, sturdy career, but neither of those words could accurately describe his time as a Cardinal. He simply didn't have it in St Louis, as Moyer pitched to a 5.74 ERA and averaged less than 5 innings pitched per start, both career worst bt a sizable margin. Moyer ended his career after 27 seasons in 2012 at the unheard of age of 49 years old, where he went out as a Colorado Rockie.
4. In 2014, the Cleveland Indians traded away notable faces Justin Masterson and Asdrubal Cabrera, in two separate trades, receiving James Ramsey from St Louis for Masterson, and Zach Walters from Washington in return for Cabrera. Both men would find themselves involved in the same trade in 2016, when Cleveland traded them away. Where were they traded in 2016?

Answer: LA Dodgers

When Cleveland originally acquired Ramsey and Walters, both players projected as young players that could eventually pan out as full time big league starters for Cleveland. The fan base was fairly gloomy about losing Cabrera and especially Masterson, but in Walters' first game as an Indian, he delivered a towering walk off home run on August 12, 2014, to walk off the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Sadly, that walk off shot was the last notable thing Walters would do as an Indian. Ramsey didn't even achieve that much. Both men were traded to the Dodgers for simple cash considerations on April 10, 2016.
5. What Major League baseball park was the first to host a night game with lights?

Answer: Crosley Field

The Cincinnati Reds and the Phillies played the first night game on May 24th, 1935. In it, Cincinnati took home a tightly contested 2-1 struggle. Paul Derringer of Cincy took the winning decision, saddling Joe Bowman of Philadelphia with the loss.
6. In what year did the Boston Braves move to Milwaukee?

Answer: 1953

This was the first franchise shift in 50 years and started a frenzy of franchise shifts and league expansion (e.g. St Louis Browns moved in 1954 to become the Baltimore Orioles, Philadelphia Athletics moved a year later to become the Kansas City Athletics, Brooklyn Dodgers moved to LA in 1958, NY Giants moved to San Francisco, also in 1958, Washington Senators moved in 1961 and became the Minnesota Twins, two expansion teams in 1961: LA Angels and Washington Senators etc etc) ).

In their inaugural season, Milwaukee went 91-62-3 and finished with the second best record in the National League.
7. Branch Rickey, the general manager and president of the Dodgers who was infamous for giving Jackie Robinson his start, came to the Dodgers in 1942 from which team after 25 years of service with them?

Answer: Cardinals

In 1942 after being field manager, president, and general manager, he came to Brooklyn Dodgers starting a dynasty team in the 1940s and 50s. Rickey is most known for giving Jackie Robinson an opportunity in 1947, but that is far from all he did as a member of the Dodgers.

He was largely responsible for pioneering the greatness that is sabermetrics, as he was the first general manager to hire a statistician as a full time analyst for the team. He also spent several years as a 25% stake owner in the team.
8. Mark McGwire hit his first major league home run in 1986. Which team did he hit it off?

Answer: Detroit Tigers

On August 25th he blasted his first of many off Walt Terrell of the Tigers. While he only hit three HRs year, McGwire's iconic career saw him blast off a total of 583 times. It was just the following year where he deposited 49 total balls into the stands.
9. Jim Maloney of the Cincinnati Reds pitched a no-hitter in 1965. How many batters did he walk in that game?

Answer: 11

He walked a total of ten and plunked another one, racking up eleven total baserunners. Yet, not a single one of them made it home in ten total innings of work from Maloney, in which his team won 1-0 in extra innings.
10. How many World Series home runs did Mark McGwire hit?

Answer: 1

His only WS dinger came off Jay Howell and the Dodgers on October 18th, 1988. That said, it came at about the best moment possible, a classic bottom of the ninth walk off situation, where McGwire's solo shot put a cap to a 2-1 victory for the Oakland Athletics over the LA Dodgers. This was the only game Oakland actually won, dropping the series 4-1 as a whole.
