Mark Spitz was born in 1950 in the USA. His first experience involving swimming occurred when he was two years old, in Hawaii. In the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Spitz managed to win seven gold medals, namely in 100 meters freestyle, 200 meters freestyle, 1500 meters freestyle, 100m butterfly, 200m butterfly, 4x100m freestyle relay, 4x200m freestyle relay and 4x100m relay.
Despite his youth, Spitz ended his Olmypic career right after his shining hour. He made a comeback attempt in 1991, but he failed to meet the Olympic standards.
2. Michael Phelps

Michael Phelps is the single most decorated Olympic athlete. He was born in the USA in 1985. More than 150 countries have won fewer medals in the Olympics from 1896 to 2020 than Pherlps did in a period of only 16 years (2000-2016). He won eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, breaking the record of Mark Spitz (seven in 1972).
After a spectacular performance in the 2012 London Olympics, he announced his retirement. Yet, he returned in 2016 for a last hurrah, once more impressing the entire world and winning five gold medals and a silver medal.
3. Ryan Lochte

Ryan Lochte was born in 1984 in the USA. His Olympic career began in 2004 in the Athens Olympics, where he earned his first gold medal. He enhanced his reputation as a world-class swimmer in 2008 in Beijing with a further two gold medals, in 2012 in London with two more gold medals and in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro with yet another gold medal.
4. Nedo Nadi

Nedo Nadi was born in 1894 in Italy. He took part in two Olympics, in the 1912 Stockholm Games and the 1920 Antwerp Games. The total number of gold medals he won was six, five of which were in the 1920 Games, but his win in the 1912 Games in men's foil individual fencing was groundsbreaking, due to his sheer youth.
5. Lucien Gaudin

Lucien Gaudin was born in 1886 in France. His Olympics career began after World War One, spanning the 1920 Antwerp Games, the 1924 Paris Games and the 1928 Amsterdam Games. His gold medals were won in the latter two Olympics, in both foil and epee, individual and team. Besides his career in sports, he was also the co-owner of "Les Films Sportifs", a company which tragically ended up bankrupt in 1934, prmpting the talented fencer to kill himself.
A cocktail contaning Campari, gin, dry vermouth and Cointreau derives its name from Lucien Gaudin.
6. Evelyn Ashford

Evelyn Ashford was born in 1957 in the USA. Her bright Olympic career spanned the 1984 Los Angeles Games, the 1988 Seoul Games and the 1992 Barcelona Games. Of her four gold medals, three of them were won in 4x100m relay, in each of the three Olympics she participated. In addition, she won the gold medal in 100min the 1984 Olympics.
Besides, her participation in the Goodwill Games, a competition sponsored by Ted Turner in an effort to combat the politicization the Olympics were being afflicted with in the 1980s, earned a further two gold medals in both 100m and 4x100m relay.
7. Hannes Kolehmainen

Hannes Kolehmainen was born in 1889 in Finland, then part of the Russian Empire. He earned his medals in the 1912 Stockholm Olympics and the 1920 Antwerp Olympics, all of them in long-sdistance running events, specifically in 5000 meters, 10000 meters and individual cross-country in 1912 and the marathon in 1920.
He and the Finnish team (their results kept separate from those of Russian athletes) also won the silver medal in team cross country in 1912.
8. Usain Bolt

Usain Bolt as born in 1986 in Jamaica. One of the most decorated and most popular sprinters of all time, his star shone in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the 2012 London Olympics and the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. The total number of gold medals he won is eight.
In detail, he won two gold medals in 2008, in 100m and 200m, three in 2012, in both the aforementioned events and in 4x100m relay and another three in 2016, in all the aforementioned events.
9. Akinori Nakayama

Akinori Nakayama was born in 1943 in Japan. He competed in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics and the 1972 Munich Olympics. In the first of the two instances, he won four gold medals, in rings, parallel bars, horizontal bar (tying with Soviet gymnast Mikhail Voronin) and, alongisde the Japanese team, in the team all-around event.
In 1972, his gold medals were earned in rings and in team all-around.
10. Anton Heida

Anton Heida was born in in 1878, in Prague, then part of Austria-Hungary, now the capital of the Czech Republic. However, his moment of glory was in the 1904 St. Louis Olympics, where he competed under the American flag. He set a record for his time, winning five gold medals in a single Olympics. To be more precise, his gold medals were in pommel horse, horizontal bar, vault, men's combined and men's team all-around.
