Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Tom Brady won many, many games throughout his legendary NFL career. As such, he found himself in victory formation quite a lot. Taking a knee actually does officially translate to negative rushing yards accumulated. How many yards, officially, did Tom Brady lose during victory formations over the course of his career?

Answer: 211

As a point of reference, Brady finally amassed 1,000 career rushing yards in 2018, after he had been in the NFL for nineteen years. If kneeldown yards did not count, Brady would have instead reached this figure in 2014, four years prior! To make matters even more impressive, consider that NFL QBs do not always end every single victorious game in kneeldown formation; sometimes the defense makes a stand to win the game, sometimes the backups are in the game and are doing the kneeling, and sometimes the game is so close that there is simply no room for kneeling.

As such, 211 yards is a pretty wild amount to lose exclusively to the victory formation!
2. Peyton Manning, like Tom Brady, was known far more for his arm than for his legs. However, even Peyton could, on extremely rare occasions, run the ball if needed. What was his career long for yards gained on a single play rushing?

Answer: 33

On November 4th, 2001, Peyton Manning came up to take a snap from his center. Amidst calling for an audible, something which is not known to this day interfered or caused Manning to hesitate, as he gave out two separate commands for a very different audible, then neither play ended up getting run. Manning would play action the ball, then simply ran a sweep on the left side of the line. Neither the Buffalo Bills nor Manning's Colt teammates had any idea to expect him to take off as he did.

The result was Peyton Manning running completely untouched for a 33 yard touchdown.
3. In 1990, Derrick Thomas set an NFL record with a whopping seven whole sacks in one single game. His victim, the quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks, was surely trembling anytime Thomas got even close to the line of scrimmage. Who did Thomas put on the ground seven whole times by himself?

Answer: Dave Krieg

As a member of the Kansas City Chiefs, Derrick Thomas became quite familiar with John Elway. However, it was poor Dave Krieg who suffered his wrath and was sacked seven whole times. Despite this, Kansas City couldn't get anything going on their own offense and lost the game 17-6. Those may yet have been the most hard earned seventeen points ever however, as any member of the offense had plenty of reason to fear Derrick Thomas on the day.
4. Sometimes, being talented at sports just runs in the family. And for one family, they became the first ever to see three individual members win their own Super Bowl rings as players. What family accomplished this?

Answer: Colquitts

The elder Craig Colquitt first broke through for his family in 1978 as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers. A little over 30 years later, Briton Colquitt won a Super Bowl as a member of the Denver Broncos in 2015. It wouldn't be too much later for the third Colquitt to take home NFL hardware, as Dustin Colquitt would finish the Trinity in 2019 with the Kansas City Chiefs.
5. Rob Gronkowski is a legendary Patriots tight end, debatably one of the greatest ever, who saw plenty of action in clutch situations. His record in NFL Wild Card games is truly a sight to behold. What is Gronk's winning percentage as a Patriot in Wild Card games?

Answer: 0%

The reason for this is simple - Gronk never played in a Wild Card game as a Patriot! The teams Gronk found himself on quite literally always secured a first round bye. It wasn't until 2020, nine years into his illustrious career, where Gronk finally partook in a Wild Card game. Only here, he was catching passes from Tom Brady as a Tampa Bay Buccaneer, and not a Patriot.

They went on to win the Super Bowl here too (SB LV, Feb. 2021), so it's fair to say playing on more game than usual hardly slowed Gronk, Brady and the Buccs down.
6. Percy Harvin, for some time, was in sole possession for the longest non-scoring play in NFL history at 104 yards. In 2018, this record was tied by a Safety for the New York Jets. Who intercepted a pass, took it 104 yards, yet just came up short in scoring?

Answer: Marcus Maye

Granted, it was very much in a garbage time situation; the Jets were up 34-16 and it was the very last play of the entire game, so victory was assured. Even still, with the Broncos basically at the goal line, they looked to score once more to make it 34-22 or 23 instead, for the pride of the game.

Instead, Case Keenum errantly threw a ball right at Marcus Maye, who was basically standing alone in the back of the end zone. Not the fleetest of foot, Maye barely made it out of the end zone but then had a wide open field to take the ball the other way. Maye was devastatingly run down literally a tenth of an inch shy of hitting paydirt, and thus the 34-16 mark fell final.
7. Don Shula is the NFL's winningest head coach, with 347 wins at the helm of two different franchises. In total Shula coached 33 seasons. In how many of them did his team at least make the playoffs?

Answer: 19

19 playoff-qualifying seasons set an NFL record, with six of those seasons advancing to the Super Bowl, which also set a record, and two Vince Lombardis for Shula to call his own.

Shula spent time between the Baltimore Colts and the Miami Dolphins. Because of how the NFL landscape would go on to change, Shula's record may yet "stand in perpetuity", as NFL front offices consistently become far less patient with coaches, to the extent that even just one single down year could lose someone their job. The closest challenger Shula had, Bill Belichick, for as legendary as he was, still did not even really come close to breaking Shula's record, and Belichick is from an older era where, again, teams were more patient with their coaches.
8. The Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers have always been bitter rivals, being in the same division. In 1994 however, this rivalry reached its peak. How many times did these two play each other in the calendar year of 1994?

Answer: 5

In the final week of the 1993 season, specifically on January 2nd of 1994, the Packers traveled to Detroit for the last game of the regular season and lost 30-20. One week later, the teams meet at Ford Field again for a Wild Card game. This time, Green Bay came away with the 28-24 win and ended the Lions' season.

As division rivals, the two teams faced off during the regular season of 1994 twice. A week 9 game in Green Bay saw the Packers win a 38-30 affair, and the two teams met again in Detroit just a month later, with the Lions winning a 34-31 nailbiter. Before the calendar could turn over, the Lions traveled to Green Bay on December 31st for a Wild Card game. They would lose a defensive struggle by way of a 16-12 margin.

This was the first time in NFL history that two teams played each other five times over the span of a calendar year.
9. Kickers may not be the most active players, but a select bunch have been pressed into some serious action. Who is one kicker who once kicked five field goals in one half of football?

Answer: Mike Nugent

Nugent wasn't just the Bengals primary source of offense, he also wasn't "just" the Bengals only source of offense: he was the whole entire game's only source of offense! Nugent's five field goals made up the entirety of the first half of scoring, as the Bengals went into their game against the Baltimore Ravens with him leading the way, en route to a 15-0 halftime lead. This lead would not be relinquished, and thankfully Nugent's teammates were able to put some points on the board, as Cincinnati won a 23-16 game to open up their 2014 season.

Chris Boniol, Morten Anderson and Rob Bironas are other kickers who have nailed five field goals in a single half.
10. Adrian Peterson was on a different planet in 2007 when toting the rock, as he absolutely destroyed the NFL record for fewest games to 1,000 yards. How many games did it take for a young AP to reach this first milestone?

Answer: 8

Peterson was extremely consistent, putting in an electrifying 5.6 yards per rush, which was a mark he only beat in 2012 and never again touched in his career. While his follow up season in 2008 was even more impressive, as he was simply used by the Minnesota Vikings even more, his 2007 rookie season was a perfect way for a rookie to announce their presence in the league.
