Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the 2006 season, which team shared the honor by having the most shutouts in the season?

Answer: Jacksonville Jaguars

The others listed did not win over five games in the season, and the 2-12 Raiders were shutout three times themselves. The Jags went only 8-8 for the season, but still shutout the Steelers and Jets. The Ravens, Bears, and Jaguars, all tied for shutting out two opponents in the season.
2. Point after touchdowns (PATs) seem to be a frivolous item in the NFL. Which kicker set a NFL record by attempting 10 PATs in one game in the 1960s?

Answer: Charlie Gogolak

The others listed were all wide receivers. Gogolak and the Washington Redskins defeated the New York Giants on November 27, 1966, and woke up with a sore leg the following day. The Redskins won the game, 72-41. The previous record was set and tied by the same kicker, Pat Harder of the Chicago Cardinals, who attempted nine in a game in both the 1948 and 1949 seasons.
3. Which team won the first AFL championship?

Answer: Houston Oilers

None of the others listed were ever in the AFL. The Oilers and Los Angeles Chargers tied the AFL for the best record of 10-4 in 1960. The two met for the championship, and Houston won it all 24-16. The Oilers were led by quarterback George Blanda who was in his 11th season, and his first with Houston. Bill Groman led the team with 72 receptions.
4. Which kicker set a record for leading the league in kicking the most field goals in a season, five times?

Answer: Lou Groza

The others were all running backs in the NFL. Groza of the Cleveland Browns was on top of the heap throughout the entire 20th century. He led the NFL in field goals in 1950, 1952-54, and 1957.
5. In this team's first season, they shutout all but one of their opponents in their nine games. In their next season, they shutout their first eight opponents, setting a record. Who was this team that lasted only five seasons in pro football?

Answer: Akron Pros

The Pros began their APFA (later NFL) franchise by going 8-0-1 in 1920. Their only tie was a 7-7 Cleveland Tiger ordeal in the season. In 1921, they continued their blanking endeavors by shutting out every team in the first eight weeks of the season. Akron finally lost 3-0 in week nine of the season, and then 14-0 the following week to the Canton Bulldogs.
6. Who was the first running back to carry the ball 4000 times in a career?

Answer: Emmitt Smith

The others never reached the 3000-mark. Emmitt retired as the only player to carry the ball 4000 times when he hung up his cleats in 2004. He had carried it 4409 times over 15 seasons. 13 seasons were with the Cowboys, and his final two as an Arizona Cardinal.
7. In the 1980s, two teams went near perfect with their 15-1 season records. One team was the 1985 Chicago Bears. Who was the other team?

Answer: 1984 San Francisco 49ers

The 1988 Dolphins went only 6-10, and the 1988 Raiders went 7-9. The 1984 Bills went a dismal 2-14. The 1984 San Francisco team lost their only game in week 7 at the hands of the Steelers, 20-17. The 49ers went all the way to a Super Bowl title over the Dolphins, 38-16.

The 1985 Bears lost their sole game in week 13 to the Dolphins, 38-24. The Bears also went all the way to a Super Bowl victory, defeating the Patriots 46-10.
8. Which team set a record for playing 24 consecutive games without losing one?

Answer: Canton Bulldogs

In the 1921 and 1922 seasons, the Canton Bulldogs ran a streak of 24 games. They went 21-0-3 in those seasons combined. Of the 24 games that the franchise played, they shutout their opponents 17 times. The franchise began in 1920, then folded after the 1926 season.
9. This receiver played for only 11 seasons, but when he retired in 1945, he had the record for the most career touchdown receptions with 99. That record stood for over 40 years until Seattle Seahawk Steve Largent came around. Now it seems like everyone is even 'passing' him up. Who was this Green Bay Packer wide receiver?

Answer: Don Hutson

The others didn't play for the Packers until the 1980s. Hutson played from 1935-1945. His season high was in 1942, catching 74 passes for 1211 yards, and crossing the goal line 17 times after a catch.
10. When this quarterback joined the Rams in 1973, the team ran off a streak of winning in double-figures for the next six seasons. Who was this quarterback, who also happened be the first African-American quarterback in the NFL?

Answer: James Harris

The others did not fit the ethnic background. Harris played for the Bills from 1969-1971 in limited duty, backing up QB Dennis Shaw. James joined the Rams in 1973 as a backup to John Hadl. Seeing what Harris had, the Rams dealt Hadl to the Packers, and Harris was the head snap-taker. Harris played in only four seasons for the Rams, but their six-season streak continued.
