Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The UFC returned to an eight man tournament format after a brief experiment with a 16 man tournament at UFC 2. The event also saw the return of defending champion Royce Gracie, but which other competitor was making their second attempt at UFC glory?

Answer: Ken Shamrock

Ken Shamrock missed the UFC 2 event because of a broken hand, but he was deemed fit enough to fight in UFC 3 despite having a partial tear in his ACL. Aside from Gracie and Shamrock all of the six other main competitors and the alternates had not fought in the UFC before.
2. UFC 3 saw the introduction of one of the most important rules of MMA, and one that probably should have been around since the beginning. What was the change in the rules for this event, and all subsequent UFC events?

Answer: Referee given the authority to stop fights

Referee John McCarthy had threatened to quit refereeing after UFC when he was rendered powerless to stop a fight between Pat Smith and Scott Morris, where Morris took an astonishing amount of punishment but refused to give in. This rule allowed the referee to make a conscious decision to end a fight once a fighter was rendered unable to defend himself but did not submit.
3. The first fight of the night saw Emmanuel Yarborough take on Keith Hackney. The size difference was incredible, Yarborough was 6'8" and 618 lbs, whilst Hackney was a mere 5'11" and 190 lbs. Hackney somehow overcame the giant, but what was the unique event during the fight that has not happened in the UFC since?

Answer: Hackney was forced out of the cage due to an unlocked door

The door was seemingly not locked after the competitors entered, and Hackney ended up going outside when he leaned on the cage door. Despite the massive size different Hackney was able to knock Yarborough down on two occasions, and after several bare-knuckle strikes to the head, Yaborough verbally submitted to referee John McCarthy. Hackney would take the nickname "Giant Killer" after the fight, whilst Yarborough went on to lose to an even smaller man in PRDIE, and also played a prison inmate in "Oz".
4. The second round pitted Ken Shamrock against Christophe Leininger in a much more evenly-weighted match. Shamrock was a successful shootfighter, whilst Leininger was a judo expert. Ken Shamrock won the fight by submission to advance in the tournament, but what caused Leininger to submit?

Answer: Strikes

Leininger became the second consecutive fighter to submit due to a barrage of strikes. Leininger made a good account for himself, despite being taken down quickly he stayed active from the guard, using rabbit punches and going for submission holds. Eventually, Shamrock mounted Leininger and carefully picked punches to cause Leininger to tap out.
5. The third quarter final saw Harold Howard defeat Roland Payne. Howard won the fight via knockout in the quickest fight of the night, how long did it take Howard to eliminate Payne from the competition?

Answer: 46 seconds

It may only have been 46 seconds long, but it was an incredible fight. The two men went out all guns blazing with wild swinging punches, take-downs and reversals. Howard was actually on the back foot trying to avoid a barrage from Payne when a hard right hand caught Payne on the temple and knocked him out.
6. The final quarter final saw defending champion Royce Gracie get back in the cage to take on newcomer Kimo Leopoldo. Kimo made an immediate impact in his entrance by carrying what to the ring on his back?

Answer: Cross

Kimo was the first fighter to have a unique entrance that got the crowd paying attention to him. He carried a cross about the same size as himself to the ring on his back. However, UFC organizers wouldn't allow props to the ring so Kimo's manager Joe Son told them that the large box shipped to the arena the day of the event contained special 'training equipment'.

In fact, it was the cross.
7. Royce Gracie continued his undefeated streak in the UFC by making Kimo tap to an arm-bar. Was this fight Gracie's longest fight in the UFC up to this point?

Answer: No

Despite the announcers telling the viewers otherwise, this fight was actually 28 seconds shorter than Gracie's fight against Minoki Ichihara at UFC 2. Gracie moved to 8-0 in his MMA career with the victory here.
8. The first semi-final saw Ken Shamrock defeat Felix Mitchell, an alternate fighter brought in to replace Keith Hackney, by tapping him out to a rear naked choke. What was the reasoning behind Hackney's departure from the tournament?

Answer: Broken Hand

Hackney's fight against Manny Yarborough took its toll on Hackney, who broke his hand during one of the many punches he connected with. Shamrock did not have an easy time with Mitchell, in what was quite a dull fight they stayed clinched for most of the contest until Shamrock took him down and locked in a rear naked choke.
9. The second semi-final provided much confusion to everyone involved in the show. Harold Howard came out for the fight ready to go, but Royce Gracie stumbled to the cage, barely able to walk under his own power. Before the fight even started the towel was thrown in by Gracie's camp, and Howard was declared the winner. For what reason did Gracie forfeit that match?

Answer: Exhaustion

Gracie had suffered heavily in his match with Kimo, as the effort required to constantly attempt to take down the much larger Kimo caused him to suffer severe fatigue. To cause even more confusion, and insult to the Gracie family, Kimo made his way into the cage to celebrate Gracie's loss, claiming he had been the man to ultimately stop him. Kimo wrote an apology letter to the Gracie family after the event.
10. Harold Howard ready to fight Ken Shamrock in the final, but Shamrock then also withdrew from the tournament citing an injured knee. This meant that another alternate had to come in to fight in the final, and he ultimately defeated Harold Howard to win the UFC 3 tournament. What was the name of this unlikely champion?

Answer: Steve Jennum

Shamrock withdrew from the competition as he only wanted to fight Royce Gracie, and he had an injured ACL he sustained before the event that he did not want to risk. Jennum took his spot in the final despite not fighting at any point previously in the tournament, and got the unlikeliest of victories when Howard botched an attempted guillotine choke, leaving Jennum in a mounted position throwing down punches. Howard's corner threw in the towel, and Steve Jennum, a police officer from Omaha, Nebraska, was the UFC 3 Tournament winner.
