Who Plays In Texas? Trivia Quiz
Professional Sports Teams In Texas
Texas is the largest state in the lower 48. So it's not surprising to know many professional sports franchises are based in Texas. Given the league they play and their location, can you match up the team names? Six different sports leagues are included.
The Dallas Cowboys have been called America's Team. They took on the moniker in 1978 when the Cowboys released a promo film that said "They appear on television so often that their faces are as familiar to the public as presidents and movie stars." Their original name was the Dallas Steers, then the Dallas Rangers, and then chose the Cowboys to avoid confusion with a local minor league baseball team, the Dallas Rangers.
They joined the NFL in 1960 as an expansion team.
2. San Antonio (NBA)
Answer: Spurs
The San Antonio Spurs were one of the four American Basketball Association teams invited to join the National Basketball Association in 1976 (Denver Nigets, Indian Pacers and NY Nets were the other three). Prior to joining the NBA, they were originally called the Dallas Chaparrals in the ABA but due to poor attendance they moved the team to San Antonio in 1973.
The team's colors are silver, black, and white.
3. Houston (MLB)
Answer: Astros
In 1962, the Houston Colt .45s were an expansion team along with the New York Mets for Major League Baseball. In 1965, the team moved their home stadium to the (at the time) state of the art Astrodome in Houston, Texas. To go along with their new home turf, they adopted the new name of the Houston Astros. Their team colors are dark blue, orange, and white.
4. Dallas (NHL)
Answer: Stars
In 1967, the Minnesota North Stars began play in the National Hockey League as an expansion team. In 1978, they merged with the Cleveland Barons after both teams were under financial stress. Then in 1993, the North Stars moved their franchise to Dallas, Texas. Seeing as Dallas isn't in the northern part of the United States, they dropped the "Northern" and became the Dallas Stars.
Their uniform colors are combinations of victory green, black, silver, skyline green, and white.
5. Houston (MLS)
Answer: Dynamo FC
In 1996, the San Jose Earthquakes were playing in the Major League Soccer league. After failing to get a new stadium deal in California, the team was moved to Houston, Texas. The original team name was Houston 1836, named in honor of the city's founding date. Local groups didn't love the idea as it was deemed racist to those opposed to the Texas Revolution that liberated Texas from Mexico. So in 2005, the team became known as the Houston Dynamo FC (football club).
6. Texas (MLB)
Answer: Rangers
In 1971, the Washington Senators got MLB's permission to move their franchise to Arlington, Texas. In 1972, the Rangers played in the American League. The team's name comes from the name of the Texas law agency. Texas Rangers have been a part of the Lone Star State's history going all the way to the early 19th Century including the Alamo.
The professional baseball team won their first World Series in 2023.
7. Dallas (NBA)
Answer: Mavericks
The Dallas Mavericks were founded in 1980. Previously Dallas had the Chaparrals in the ABA (American Basketball Association) but they moved to San Antonio in 1973. Dallas played their first season at Reunion Arena. They debated calling the team names like The Wranglers but chose to call themselves The Dallas Mavericks. One of the team's owners was actor James Garner who starred in the television show "Maverick".
The series ran from 1957 to 1962.
8. Dallas (WNBA)
Answer: Wings
The Dallas Wings didn't start off in Dallas or even Texas. The WNBA awarded a franchise to the Detroit Shock in 1998. The team moved to Oklahoma in 2010 and became the Tulsa Shock. Then in 2015, the Shock moved to Arlington, Texas and became the Dallas Wings. Like the Cowboys, both teams don't play in Dallas but nearby in Arlington.
The team name was chosen as a reference to a pegasus horse that became an iconic symbol of downtown Dallas. The name "shock" was a reference to a car part and the original Detroit location so it didn't fit the move to Dallas.
9. Houston (NBA)
Answer: Rockets
In 1967, the San Diego Rockets were an expansion team in the National Basketball Association. The team was on the verge of collapsing financially and a Houston based ownership group bought the team in 1971 and got the NBA to approve the move to Houston, Texas.
The NBA had already approved a new franchise to Houston and after the original franchise team didn't have enough ownership help, it was easy to award the new franchise to the San Diego team moving to a new location.
10. Dallas (UFL)
Answer: Renegades
The Dallas Renegades compete in the United Football League. The team was founded in 2018 in the new league created by WWE executive Vince McMahon. They played the 2020 season as the Dallas Renegades before the league ceased play due to the COVID restrictions.
When the league picked up play in 2023 they became the Arlington Renegades. In 2026, the Renegades began play in Frisco, a suburb of Dallas, and became the Dallas Renegades again.
