1.6 "Malcolm in the Middle" - "Sleepover" Quiz

Answer: Taking a family picture

Malcolm and Reese are seen fighting in a photography studio as the episode opens and seem to be unhappy about having to take a family picture. Their mother Lois tells them that they don't have a single family picture together and this is their opportunity to get one, though as Malcolm points out, their older brother Francis is not there to be part of the picture. We then see the youngest of the family, Dewey, posing in another family's picture.

Lois presents a coupon to the photographer but it turns out to be expired. Unwilling to concede this fact to the photographer, Lois orders her family to smile for the picture, and comically, even the photographer complies with her instructions!

Answer: Erases Finley's name off the page

We first see Francis hanging onto his friend Stanley, who is doing pull-ups. Even though Stanley is the one doing the most effort, Francis is more tired and wants to take a break. He then opens a closet and finds his classmate Finley hiding in a closet. Finley, holding a baby doll's head, says he is scared because he was marked by "the brothers of the apocalypse" and haunted by the curse of "poquito cabeza" (which is apparently a hazing ritual performed by the seniors at the school). Finley asks Francis to turn in his math homework so he doesn't have to leave the closet, but deviously, as usual, Francis erases Finley's name from the paper so that he can pretend it is his work.

The seniors eventually find Finley and carry him away from the room.

Answer: Child's Play

While Malcolm prepares to go to Stevie's house for a sleepover, Reese is reading the TV Guide. He finds out that "a Chucky movie" is playing tonight, but Lois immediately stops him. She says that Reese's father, Hal, does not like "evil puppet movies". This is a reference to the main character in the "Child's Play" horror movie franchise, Chucky, a serial killer who takes the form of a doll.

The original "Child's Play" film was released in 1988 and won Catherine Hicks a Saturn Award for Best Actress. A number of different sequels, such as "Bride of Chucky" and "Curse of Chucky" were released after 1990. The seventh movie in the franchise, "Cult of Chucky", premiered in 2017.

Lois then challenges Reese to an arm-wrestling match to prove he is old enough to watch the movie. Reese whispers to himself that "she is just a person" and tries to beat her, but Lois easily defeats her son.

Answer: Arc de Triomphe

Malcolm is excited about building a t-rex model he brought with him, which requires an "x-acto" utility knife to cut the pieces. Stevie's overprotective mom is horrified about Malcolm's plans and takes away the knife and the t-rex model. She suggests that the boys work on a jigsaw puzzle and then pulls out an Arc de Triomphe puzzle. Disappointed, Malcolm asks if they could order pizza, to which Stevie responds that his mom is making "cheeseless, sauceless pizza".

The Arc de Triomphe is a popular monument and tourist attraction in Paris, France. The monument was built in the 1800s per Napoleon's orders and was concluded in 1836 under King Louis-Philippe. The Arc was meant to honor members of the French military forces. Another famous war monument, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, is also located in the same place as the Arc.

Answer: 30 seconds

Malcolm doesn't understand why they are getting ready for bed so early, since it is not even 8:00pm. The overprotective Kenarban parents tuck both Stevie and Malcolm into bed with such strength that Malcolm can't move when they leave. Ms. Kenarban sets a timer for exactly 4 minutes for the boys to chat before going to sleep.

When she leaves, Mr. Kenarban tries to be friendly by adding a mere 30 seconds to the clock. Upset, Malcolm decides to climb out of bed but an alarm is instantly triggered when he touches the floor. Malcolm then turns off Stevie's audio monitor so that his parents can't hear them, explaining that "parents aren't allowed to control everything you do".

Answer: Fudge frosting

Still trying to extend his bedtime, Reese does his social studies homework and even tries to call his grandma. Not convinced, his parents tell him that they will agree to let him stay up late if he manages to get his brother Dewey to bed. The task appears to be impossible, and looks even harder because Dewey is eating chocolate fudge frosting straight out of the can! Reese agrees to the deal even though both his parents think he doesn't stand a chance. Lois tells Hal that she knows Reese won't succeed, but that at least it will keep him busy and let the two parents enjoy the evening.

Answer: Arcade

Malcolm somehow convinces Stevie to defy his parents and do something fun for a change. He helps Stevie break out of the house through a window and then takes him to an arcade. Stevie seems to be having a lot of fun but that doesn't last long. When Malcolm tries to find his friend's wheelchair, he finds out that the chair is no longer there! Malcolm asks the security guard for help.

While the unhelpful guard stands up to get a form, Malcolm steals the guard's rolling chair and runs out of the arcade with Stevie sitting on the guard's chair.

Answer: Head

Reese and Dewey are scuffling with each other in the bathroom as Reese tries to make his brother take a bath. Dewey then crawls to the scale and wonders how much his head weighs. In a lighthearted moment, Dewey keeps thinking his head weighs "zero" because that is what the scale marks each time he lifts his head! Meanwhile, Lois and Hal are enjoying a glass of sparkling wine and decide to let the phone go to voicemail.

The call was coming from Francis, who claimed to be inside a washing machine. He probably was there hiding from the seniors, after he stood up to them earlier in the episode. Unfortunately for Francis, the seniors put quarters into the machine as Francis yelled in desperation. We can only imagine what happened next...

Answer: Interrupting a piano recital

The seniors had been trying to scare and torture Francis with a series of hazing rituals, but to their surprise, nothing seemed to work. Francis was hanged upside down, locked in a cage with a rat, and had his eyes covered with a bandage. Still, Francis describes them as "amateurs" because he has been through much worse, from the "master herself". We soon learn that Francis is talking about his mother Lois and the multiple times she "tortured" him throughout his childhood. His memories include Lois yelling at a referee for making a call against Francis, showing pictures of her son when he was a baby to a girlfriend, and storming into a locker room to yell at Francis for taking her car without permission. According to Francis, "that's just the stuff he didn't block out".

The senior cadets realize that they could be more effective at making people suffer by emulating Lois. They even post a picture of Lois on an altar to signify that they are now honoring her "evilness".

Answer: No

As Hal and Lois enjoy the night in their bedroom, Reese has fallen asleep in the hallway because he was unsuccessful in making Dewey go to bed. Instead, Dewey is the one who managed to stay up late and is calmly watching the "Chucky" movie while eating cereal.

Malcolm and Stevie find themselves wandering around the city in the middle of the night, searching for Stevie's stolen wheelchair. After a few encounters with homeless men and after seeing Hal leave an adult store, they finally catch the thieves. In their pursuit, Stevie falls out of the shopping cart he was using to move but is not injured. They both are able to get back to Stevie's house, where they find Stevie's mom frantically yelling at the police that her boy is missing. Before Stevie could say anything else, Malcolm ran away, after which the episode ends.
