Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This season of "MasterChef" featured the theme of 'Generations'. Which generation was not included?

Answer: Gen Alpha

With thousands of applicants, only so many were brought into the MasterChef Kitchen for the auditions, and these were further winnowed down into four groups based on the generations of the contestants' birth years. The regular judging panel weighed in, but each cohort was also met by a judge from their respective generations as well; Millennials had Priya Krishna, the Baby Boomers were met by Lidia Bastianich, former finalist Nick DiGiovanni oversaw the Gen Z crowd, and former winner Christine Hà judged the Gen X group.

At the end of this, twenty contestants passed into the main event.
2. In one challenge, contestants had to work with aged ingredients. Which of these was one generation forced to cook with?

Answer: Stilton cheese

One Elimination Challenge early in the competition featured aged foods (prosciutto, salami, kimchi, dry-aged ribeye, aged duck breast, aged balsamic, century eggs, etc.), prompting everyone to maneuver around tricky ingredients to make a sophisticated dish, but since Rebecka won the previous Mystery Box Challenge, she had the ability to give one of the four generations a mystery ingredient to incorporate partway through the cook: 18-month-old Stilton cheese. She gave this to Gen X.

Anna won this one with her restaurant-quality dry-aged salmon while Sunshine's undercooked dry-aged ribeye steak (with stilton mixed into her compound butter) got her sent home.
3. During one pivotal challenge, the competitors had to bake birthday cakes. The winner of the previous challenge, Anna, was able to penalize the Gen Z team by removing their use of which of these?

Answer: Stand mixer

As part of a celebration in the MasterChef Kitchen, the contestants were met with a baking challenge that asked them to use ninety minutes to bake birthday cakes of at least two layers. Because she won the previous challenge, Anna was able to burden one generation by forcing them to avoid using stand mixers, meaning they had to mix everything by hand-- she chose Gen Z.

While Becca won this challenge despite the handicap by making a three-layer chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting and ganache, both Anna (who had the advantage) and Geags were eliminated for their cakes, the latter of which had raw flour in its cream cheese frosting. It left only fifteen home cooks still competing.
4. Crossing the halfway point of the season, the contestants had to create a dish using what brand of beer?

Answer: Blue Moon

For a special challenge in the MasterChef Kitchen, the judges brought out previous winner Grant Gillon to speak on and help judge a cook based on one of his key Midwest ingredients: beer. With three types of Blue Moon Beer on tap, the contestants had to use either classic, light, or mango-wheat beer to make a dish, even though several of them didn't drink beer.

Rebecka was the winner of this challenge, making a restaurant-quality Italian meal and saving the Baby Boomers from elimination while Fatima, who hadn't had a sip of beer before, failed to bring any beer flavour or seasoning to her dish.
5. Was this season's Tag Team Challenge performed with the contestants paired by their generations?

Answer: No

The Top 12 were told, upon entering the MasterChef Kitchen, that the days of playing as a group in generations was done. Instead, this week, at the start of their alleged individual game, they were paradoxically paired back up for their Tag Team Challenge in which the duos had to swap places, back and forth, to create four dishes, each one corresponding to the different generations in some way. Chefs had to make King Trumpet Mushroom Scallops (for Gen Z), Sesame Crusted Ahi Tuna (for Millennials), Pan-Roasted Filet Mignon (for Gen X), and Crepes Suzette with Chantilly Creme (for the Baby Boomers).

After Rebecka chose the pairings, they all had seventy-five minutes to cook, and at the end, Michael and Kimberly won immunity pins and advantages in the next round. Adam and Jeet dropped to the bottom here and Jeet was eliminated, leaving eleven.
6. "Hot Ones" host Sean Evans was introduced as a guest judge for one Mystery Box containing which of the following?

Answer: Spicy ingredients

The Top 10 entered the MasterChef Kitchen for a Mystery Box Challenge only to find that the boxes were on fire, an indication they would be working with all manner of spicy ingredients from peppers to condiments and hot sauces, creating dishes to wow special guest judge Sean Evans from "Hot Ones". As an advantage for winning the previous challenge, Kamay had immunity and the ability to ice out one of her competitors for five minutes of the cook time-- she chose Becca.

Adam won this challenge, making a jerk chicken dish with scotch bonnets, perhaps the hottest pepper option from the Mystery Box, and with it he won the last advantage of the season. This week saw both Hallie and Kimberly, each of whom made a spicy fried chicken dish, get sent home, eliminating Gen X from the competition entirely.
7. The top eight saw the return of what high-stress challenge in the MasterChef Kitchen?

Answer: The Wall

The top eight entered the MasterChef Kitchen to see the familiar 80-foot wall erected down the length of the studio and with that they were split into pairs for the intense challenge. For winning the previous challenge, Adam got to choose his partner (he picked Michael) while Horacio paired with Warren, Becca and Murt teamed up, and Rebecka and Kamay made the last team. With only five minutes in the pantry, both team members needed to conceptualize a full dish and then spend sixty minutes making identical offerings to the judges without seeing each others' progress.

The episode ended with a double elimination as the judges chose to send Baby Boomers Warren and Horacio home for their disconnect and problematic choices.
8. This season's restaurant takeover occurred at the famous Los Angeles restaurant, Spago.

Answer: False

While Spago has been used as the restaurant takeover destination in a past season, the top six home cooks of Season 14 instead attended the one-night opening of an L.A. pop-up restaurant called Ramsay's Rooftop this time around, splitting into two teams of three to cook Gordon's complex menu items-- pan-roasted scallops and sauteed lobster tail for appetizers and pan-roasted duck and NY strip steak for the entree.

The Red Team, originally led by Murt but subsequently led by Michael, emerged victorious while the judges sent Adam home on account of his poorly managed scallops and steaks.
9. The semifinal round of the competition involved a duo of replication challenges, but the first of these had the chefs attempting to create a dish based on which of these?

Answer: A review

Before the final three headed into the finale cook, the judges needed to eliminate the fifth and fourth place home cooks from the game.

This started with the last Mystery Box Challenge of the competition in which the contestants received only a review of a dish that they had to conceive-- something where the hero of the dish had a smoky flavour, it had citrus and umami sides, and it featured a sweet and spicy sauce. With only forty-five minutes to cook, Murt was eliminated from the game.

This led the top four to complete a replication challenge, fighting to keep up wth Gordon while he made a pan-seared salmon with truffle gnocchi and sautéed asparagus, fennel & pernod beurre blanc, and a crispy leek and seaweed side salad. On the back of this challenge, the judges sent home Rebecka.
10. Which chef won "MasterChef" Season 14?

Answer: Michael

The finale for this season followed the same format as many before it, forcing the last three home cooks standing to create a cohesive three-course meal of an appetizer, an entree, and a dessert, each being made within one hour, one at a time. And when the doors opened, the live audience discovered that the competition for trophy would be fought for between two Millennials and one Gen Z home cook.

After the dust settled, the judges awarded the MasterChef Trophy, a new Viking kitchen, kitchenware from Oxo, and a quarter of a million dollars to Michael, leaving Becca and Kamay as joint runners-up.
