Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "MasterChef" season 6 saw the introduction of which new judge?

Answer: Christina Tosi

With Joe Bastianich's departure between "MasterChef Junior" season 3 and the start of this 2016 season of the show, "MasterChef" needed a new third judge. And with that, all-star baker, pastry chef, and restauranteur Christina Tosi was brought in to provide her expertise for the sake of the amateur home cooks. With an eye for the technical and a general sweet tooth, Tosi brought with her decades of experience in a side of the kitchen not completely covered on the judging panel thus far.

She was introduced to the auditioning contestants on day one.
2. Chefs competed for white aprons in head-to-head battles. How many contestants were in the audition phase in this season?

Answer: Forty

Although a Top 20 was brought in, those twenty contestants were introduced to the first road block in their quest to become America's next MasterChef-- another Top 20. In the audition round, the home cooks went head-to-head, cooking dishes in thirty minutes for the judges in a fight to nab an apron.

This meant that twenty chefs would be sent through. When they were selected, the eliminated twenty got one more shot at a final two white aprons (those were given to Stephen and Shelly) to round out the total to twenty-two contestants.
3. For their first Team Challenge, the contestants had to make meals for visitors to what California amusement park?

Answer: Knott's Berry Farm

In the first handful of challenges, contestants were whittled down from 22 to 18, completing a couple of Mystery Boxes and engaging with difficult baking challenges for both Elimination Tests and Pressure Tests. In the fourth episode, the Top 20 headed to Knott's Berry Farm and split into two teams (led by Kerry and Darah) to cook for every single person to walk through the gates.

It led to amusement park guide Darah's elimination in the subsequent Pressure Test (making cinnamon rolls.
4. During one episode, the contestants left the MasterChef Kitchen to complete challenges in which other city?

Answer: Las Vegas

The Top 17 were sent to Las Vegas for a couple of challenges to fill in the Team Challenge and Pressure Test requirements in episode 6. For the first challenge, Stephen and Shelly headed teams making lobster and chicken tenders on the roof of The Cromwell Hotel and Casino.

It led into a four-person Pressure Test in which the participating chefs had to cook steaks in Gordon Ramsay's Steak in Paris Las Vegas. After a New York strip steak and a filet mignon, Gordon sent Alisa home on a blind tasting. Following this, the chefs returned to the MasterChef kitchen.
5. This season saw the show's 100th episode. The Pressure Test involved a birthday cake of how many layers?

Answer: Three

The Team Challenge for the Top 14, held in this episode, took the contestants out to the vineyards of Malibu for an upscale dinner prep involving oysters, caviar, and duck. After feeding critics, chefs, and past contestants on the show, Olivia's red team eked out a win over Nick's blue team, saving just over half the chefs from a baking Pressure Test.

It meant that six contestants had to make a three-layer birthday cake celebrating the show, and afterward they said goodbye to both Charlie and Amanda.
6. Using rice, one contestant this season had the opportunity to have a recipe featured in what magazine?

Answer: "Family Circle"

The dish that won this unique Mystery Box Challenge ultimately came from Tommy, who made a traditional Creole jambalaya. It gave him a critical immunity in the proceeding Elimination Challenge in episode 10 as the season whittled itself down to only ten remaining contestants.

Other challenges during this run of episodes included recreations of Gordon's beef wellington and scallops, elevation of the classic peanut butter and jelly combo, and a Pressure Test involving fruit tarts.
7. For one of their Mystery Box Challenges, the chefs had to learn how to flambé. Which of these was not an item they were given to cook with?

Answer: Rum

The Top 9 received this Mystery Box along with five liqueurs and a few matches. After a demonstration from all three judges, the cooks tested their technical know-how to provide all manner of dishes. It was one in a series of tough tasks whittling the Top 10 to the Top 8.

After the judges saved all of the competitors in episode 11, episode 12 featured a very early family visit. Other dishes cooked during this stage of the competition included a fruit tart and potato gnocchi in the Pressure Tests and Southern cuisine.
8. This season, competitors completed a platter for their tag team challenge themed around which of these?

Answer: Summer party

The Top 7 were the chefs who reached the Tag Team Challenge during which they had to complete a full platter in teams of two consisting of fried chicken, sliders, fresh tortillas, and dips (amongst other items). As always, some pairs excelled while others floundered.

It ultimately got Tommy eliminated while the others moved on to their Restaurant Takeover at the Japanese fusion restaurant, Chaya. The competition heated up even more from that point forward as the contestants faced complex pasta trios for Pressure Tests.
9. One of the final Elimination Tests involved using baskets created by past winners. Which of these was not a basket handed to the participating chefs?

Answer: Farm-Fresh

In episode 17, after a simple Mystery Box Challenge, Claudia was brought in to select baskets for her fellow chefs, and for this, she had to assign baskets curated by past winners Christine Ha, Luca Manfe, and Courtney Lapresi. She also had the opportunity to craft her own basket to be handed out with the Southeast Asian, Italian, and Baking baskets (she went with Italian).

Her Mexican basket went to Katrina who, subsequently was eliminated.
10. Which chef won "MasterChef" season 6?

Answer: Claudia

After the chefs were whittled down, the final episode saw Claudia facing off against Derrick for the grand prize. As per a usual structure of the finals, both chefs needed to create an appetizer, an entree, and a dessert course to be tasted by the three judges.

After sixty minutes for each dish, both chefs presented their plates and it was Claudia's elevated Mexican menu that wowed the judges. It won her the $250,000 prize, the cookbook deal (with which she wrote "Claudia's Cocina: A Taste of Mexico"), and the MasterChef trophy.
