Her romance with Mark Sloan is brought to an end when she is one of seven doctors involved in a plane crash. Lexi dies at the site and Mark later has his life support machine turned off. The hospital is renamed Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital after them.

Amelia Shepherd (portrayed by Caterina Scorsone) is the younger sister of Derek Shepherd. She starts off in "Private Practice", joining the practice despite knowing she would encounter her former sister-in-law, Addison Montgomery. She became a regular at Grey Sloan from S11 with guest appearances before then.

She manages a phoenix-like transition over the seasons, emerging from her darker past and her brother's shadow.

First appearing in the pilot episode, Derek Shepherd (portrayed by Patrick Dempsey) is a divorcee. His ex, Addison, appears in the S1 finale and complicates things with Meredith. Once resolved, Addison moves to Los Angeles and out of the picture. Derek and Meredith get married and are raising three children when he decides to take up a job in Washington, D.C. He is in D.C. when he stops to help at an accident and then is himself hit by a truck. He dies at the hospital from his injuries. His little sister Amelia is his replacement at Grey Sloan by this time.

The merger between Seattle Grace and Mercy West goes through in S6 E5 with the hospital being renamed Seattle Grace Mercy at this point. The four new doctors coming from Mercy West, including Jackson Avery (portrayed by Jesse Williams), soon clash with their counterparts. Williams becomes a regular cast member from S7 through to S17 with his character trying to escape the shadow of his renowned surgeon grandfather Harper Avery (and his surgeon mother Catherine Avery).
