He is of course the only one we care about, but the other one we see alive is Blayne Moll who is trapped in the cage with Xander at the end. They were kidnapped by their teacher substitute Natalie French, who was, in fact, a giant praying mantis.

This episode is the first time when a member of the Scoobie gang is turned into a villain. Xander is possessed by a hyena and becomes mean and aggressive, teasing Willow, attacking Buffy and eating Herbert the pig. This episode is referred to later on in the show during the episode "Phases" in season two when Xander, in an attempt to help, states that he knows how to get inside the werewolf's head.

He believes this because he's experienced that feeling before when he was taken over by the hyena which would have been helpful... if he hadn't claimed not to remember anything about the possession.

He brought her back to life at the end of season one using CPR because Angel, who was with him at the time, claimed to have no breath. Xander would later go on to help revive Buffy in the two part season six opener along with Anya, Tara and Willow.

Throughout season four Xander went through several jobs, from selling candy to working at a phone sex line. It was only after season five's episode "The Replacement" that he found his favorite job as a carpenter where he stayed until about halfway through season seven due to the apocalypse.

This was the episode where Joyce died. There are so many things about it that make it different to any other episode in the series. The big bad of the season (Glory) doesn't appear at all in the episode. There was no musical score in the episode at all, with the notable exception of a Christmas carol heard in the background of the flashback sequence at the beginning of the episode.

It was also the only episode in the fifth season that didn't show Spike, who at that time was one of the main cast.

All these songs appeared in the musical episode 'Once More With Feeling', which was six minutes longer than any other episode. The UPN network allowed it to run the first time without any cuts. However when the episode went into syndication, those minutes were cut by verses being removed from songs and a few shots being cut.

It was poked out by Caleb, a crazy preacher played by Nathan Fillion. This would be the first in a long line of people who had appeared as one of the good guys in Joss Whedon's series "Firefly", who would late appear as villains in his other shows. The other people who did this were Gina Torres who played Jasmine in "Angel", Adam Baldwin who played Marcus Hamilton on "Angel" and Alan Tudyk who plays Alpha on "Dollhouse".

Buffy was worried that Dawn might get killed in the final battle and so she begged Xander to get Dawn into his car and get her as far away as he could because Buffy trusted him with such an important job. That plan fell through when Dawn pulled out a tazer and shocked Xander before driving them both back to the Summer's home.
