Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This episode surrounds the aftermath of the deaths of what two people?

Answer: Caesar and Niobe

Caesar was murdered in the Senate. Vorenus, who had been hired to guard Caesar, was diverted by someone claiming to know information about his wife.

Vorenus found out that the little boy, Lucius, was actually his wife's child. When Vorenus went to confront Niobe, he had a knife, intending to kill her. However, Niobe leaped off the balcony and fell onto the ground below.
2. At first, what did Mark Antony intend to do after finding out Caesar was murdered?

Answer: Go North and raise an army

At first, Atia didn't know if Mark Antony was alive or dead. Atia's first instinct was to assume the worst and leave the city, for their own protection. Antony came to the house after running for his life (he was unarmed and men were attempting to kill him). He told Atia he will go North and raise an army to avenge Caesar's death. He added that Atia may do as she pleases. Atia took offense to this and accused him of arranging for his prostitutes' safety before her. Antony attempted to calm her, telling her he didn't mean it that way - he meant that he couldn't force her to do anything.

Atia decided her family will go with Antony. Antony decided they will stop and get Calpurnia, Caesar's wife, because it would look bad if they left her in the city.
3. Whose idea was it not to leave the city?

Answer: Octavian's

Upon arriving at Caesar's house, Calpurnia insists that Caesar's will be read. Calpurnia was given money to live off of, the people would be given some money, and Posca, Caesar's slave, was given his freedom. However, the bulk of Caesar's estate was left to Octavian and Caesar's will stipulated that Octavian be considered Caesar's son and given his name. Mark Antony was a bit upset to find out that he, Caesar's loyal friend, was given nothing.

Once finding out that Caesar left him everything, Octavian believed it best if he (and his family) stayed in the city. Otherwise, Brutus and Cassius would declare Caesar's property forfeit and take everything for themselves as Caesar would be declared a tyrant.

However, if Caesar were declared a tyrant, as Octavian pointed out, then all of Caesar's rules would be undone - including those appointing Brutus and Cassius to their positions. If Caesar wasn't declared a tyrant, then all the appointments would remain intact. However, if he wasn't a tyrant, Brutus and Cassius would be guilty of murder.

Either way, Cassius and Brutus stood to lose something.

Atia decides her family will stay in the city after (finally) hearing Octavian's thoughts. Mark Antony then went to Servilia's to make a bargain with Brutus and Cassius - they reach an amnesty: Caesar isn't declared a tyrant and Brutus and Cassius aren't declared murderers.
4. Why does Vorenus claim he was guilty in the disappearance of his children?

Answer: He cursed them

The children came home and saw Vorenus holding Niobe's body. He was upset that no one had told him that Lucius was actually Niobe's son and not the son of his eldest daughter. He cursed them and damned them to hell, then left the house. He spent time wandering and was robbed. When he came back, the children were not there.

Vorenus didn't know, but they'd been stolen.

He finds out that Erastes had taken his children. Erastes then tells Vorenus he'd had sex with the children and killed them - throwing their bodies into the river. Vorenus then kills Erastes.
5. Who came to pay their respects to Caesar?

Answer: Servilia

When Sevrilia arrived, Calpurnia spit in Servilia's face twice. (Perhaps one spit because Servilia had been Caesar's mistress and another one because she urged her son, Brutus, to kill Caesar?)
6. When Antony was bargaining with Brutus and Cassius, he tells them to listen. What was Antony listening to?

Answer: silence

Antony tells them to listen to the silence. There people weren't rising up against Caesar's tyranny. Brutus and Cassius didn't have the following of the people. Caesar, Antony claimed, had been loved. And now that Caesar was dead, their love transferred over to Mark Antony.

Antony bargained with Brutus and Cassius, explaining that they'd call an amnesty - Caesar wouldn't be called a tyrant and Brutus and Cassius wouldn't be called murderers. Antony would serve out his term then go to the provinces where he'd plow his fields and have sex with his slaves.
7. What did Mark Antony want to do the morning of Caesar's funeral?

Answer: Have sex

Atia attempted to get Antony out of bed, but he kept saying he wouldn't get out of bed until he'd had sex. He even mentions that he'd never had sex with someone in a funeral dress and encourages Atia to come to bed with him. Atia wasn't having any of that, and sent for the German from the kitchen to be with Antony instead.
8. Brutus spoke at Caesar's funeral. How did people describe his speech?

Answer: cerebral

Both Antony and Erastes described Brutus's speech. Erastes claimed not to have been able to understand it.
9. What did Antony do at Caesar's funeral?

Answer: Took out the toga Caesar wore when he was killed

Antony spoke after Brutus. Erastes claimed that Antony's speech started out with how they all gathered together, blah blah blah. But then Antony took out Caesar's toga, stained with Caesar's blood. Antony riled up the crowd and half the crowd was crying. Then, Antony threw the toga into the crowd, which went wild.

Erastes continued that he believed Antony was disrespectful - funerals should be for honoring someone, not riling them up and sending out mobs.
10. Who encouraged Brutus and Cassius to leave the city?

Answer: Mark Antony

After the funeral, Antony went back and talked with Brutus and Cassius. As Antony had whipped everyone up, the people were now against the pair. Antony suggested Brutus become grain monitor - it would give him an excuse to take an extended tour away from Rome.
