Abraham 'Abe' Simpson is the father of Homer Simpson. At the start of the episode, he is shown at the beginning of his working career as a shoveler in a mine. With two of his colleagues, Abe takes his first paycheck to Moe's Tavern. Abe looks at his check and yells about FICA and why the government is taking money out of his paycheck.

The Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) was enacted so that both employers and employees contribute toward Social Security and Medicare for retirees.

Bart Simpson is notorious for vandalizing property so Abe certainly believes that Bart could have been picked up by the police for it. Unfortunately, the 'family member in trouble' situation is a very common tactic with scammers and oftentimes like in this episode an elderly individual is preyed upon.

Answer: Best Western Union

While in Best Western Union, Abe Simpson is told to fill out a form to complete the transfer. You can overhear other customers talking about sending money overseas and not understanding why their family member is in such a dire situation. The Best Western Union signage states that it is both a Motel & Money Transfer business as its real-world namesakes are.

Answer: Cribbage winnings

Abe's son Homer asks him how much the scammer got from him, expecting it to be like $50. However, Abe tells his family that it was $10,000 and they are appalled. Abe had been saving up the money he had won playing cribbage with his friends in a cigar box before he was scammed.

Answer: Shaming is blaming

Abe attends a meeting of a group called S.C.A.M.S. and it is explained that they are all victims and shouldn't feel guilty. However, Homer enters the room and starts accusing his father of not being careful and telling him it was his fault he was scammed. The support group then chants 'shaming is blaming' to Homer and in classic Homer fashion, he agrees with them.

Homer boastfully states that he is too savvy to be scammed. Bart and Lisa then share stories about how they were scammed even though they are tech-savvy kids. Bart paid some bullies for wedgie insurance but it didn't work because they kept raising his deductible and didn't provide what they said they would. On the other hand, Lisa received an e-mail about being selected for a saxophone program and she clicked on a link and then got hacked.

Answer: Cutlife Knives

Lisa tells Homer that Cutlife Knives is a multi-level marketing company that is a classic pyramid scheme. Homer counters, telling her that he doesn't sell the product but he just connects customers to a distributor and he acts as a middleman and will eventually get a portion of the sales. Eventually, Homer realizes that he has been scammed as well.

Answer: There are dozens of telephone scammers there.

Abe's family is with him when the scammer calls a second time. Lisa tells Abe to try and keep the scammer on the phone for a while so that she can use special software to pinpoint the call's location. The location ends up being a whole office with dozens of scammers telephoning potential victims.

Answer: He lets the scammers leave.

Lisa is surprised when Chief Wiggum lets the scammers go. She demands that he arrest them but he tells the Simpsons that they are just there being paid minimum wage and trying to make a living. Lisa feels sorry for the scammers but feels that Chief Wiggum still should have arrested them so they can't scam others.

Answer: Gift cards

Frustrated that everyone is trying to scam everyone else, Marge kicks over a trashcan and dozens of gift cards fall on the floor. Homer and Bart scoop up the gift cards and the family ends up spending $500 on appetizers at a restaurant with these gift cards that were purchased by people that had been scammed.
