Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Two new Pokemon types emerge in Johto, but only one has a dedicated gym. Who is its gym leader?

Answer: Jasmine

The gym leader of Olivine City, Jasmine will be the sixth gym leader faced in the game, and once you're able to get her back to her post, she'll showcase some of the series' newest types of Pokemon-- steel-type. To be fair, steel-types existed in Kanto in "Red", "Blue", and "Yellow", but never under that classification. To allow for the update, Magnemite and Magneton have been converted to part-steel for this generation, and you'll face two of the former, in addition to Steelix, during the fight against her.

Steel-type Pokemon are strong against ice and rock-types but weak to fire, fighting, and ground-types. They're also immune to poison attacks.
2. Dark-type Pokemon are particularly effective against which type?

Answer: Ghost

While steel-types get their gym experience in Olivine City, the newly-introduced dark-types don't get much representation in formal battle until you come across the Elite Four where Karen will act as your fourth hurdle to overcome en route to ultimate victory. She'll bring forth Espeon, Gengar, Murkrow, and Houndoom (and Vileplume, who isn't dark-type at all).

This new type was created to balance out an uneven amount of strength behind psychic and ghost-types, providing a super effective type against them. On the flip-side, dark-types are weak to bug and fighting-type attacks. They're immune to psychic attacks, fortunately.
3. Tweaks to Pokemon typing better refined the balances in battle strategies in this generation. Which type, formerly with no advantage, was changed to be less effective against fire-type Pokemon?

Answer: Ice

A handful of types changed to better reflect both sensible balance changes across all typing and to be more in-line with the anime, already well-established by the time this generation released. Ice-type Pokemon, which got a bit more substance in "Gold", "Silver", and "Crystal", became less effective against fire-types, though fire-types would obviously super effective in the reverse.

Additionally, ghost-type moves became super effective against psychic Pokemon, increasing the viability of this subset of creatures.

On the flip side, poison-type Pokemon lost their super effectiveness against bug-types while bug types became ineffective against poison-types. Not all changes were helpful!
4. In Generation II, Pokemon are capable of holding items in and out of battle. This can NOT include which of the following?

Answer: Pokeball

Held items can come in a handful of forms, and some might be less useful than others from a battle standpoint. This being said, some Pokemon are caught with items and all can be given items to hold, using them when certain thresholds are met. A Pokemon holding a Potion or a Berry, for instance, can heal itself on its turn in battle, adding a new dynamic that doesn't cost an attack. Other items might increase the power of certain types of attacks when held.

Outside of battle, this can also come in quite handy for Pokemon who evolve via specific means. A Slowpoke holding a King's Rock, for instance, will evolve into Slowking when traded.
5. Wild Abra, since Generation I, have been known to use Teleport to withdraw from battle. What newly introduced Pokemon in "Gold", "Silver", and "Crystal" can do the same?

Answer: Natu

And it functions the same as before too, creating the unfortunate situation of finding these hard-to-locate creatures (found only outside the Ruins of Alph) and hoping that they don't simply vanish before they can be caught or fought. Using a technique like Wrap can keep it in place for a short time, but you'll need to be clever and quick to ensure it stays put. Its evolved form, Xatu, also has Teleport but it can't be found in the wild.

Abra can still be found in both Kanto and Johto, up to these old tricks, in "Gold", "Silver", and "Crystal".
6. Which technique will aid in preventing a wild Pokemon from fleeing a battle?

Answer: Mean Look

This technique works both ways since a wild Pokemon that uses Mean Look on your active Pokemon will also prevent you from leaving the battle. It's not to say that all Pokemon are likely to flee, but the second gen games in the series do see foes escape more often than in Kanto, and this can be a bit frustrating for the tougher-to catch Pokemon out in the wild.

There are more ways than just Mean Look to lock a Pokemon down though. If you're not interested in putting a Pokemon to sleep and risking it awakening, using a binding move like Wrap will also keep them in one place.
7. The Infatuation status effect is added in "Pokemon Gold" and "Silver". It completely prevents a Pokemon from attacking its foe.

Answer: False

Infatuation, as a status effect, requires the use of the technique Attract, which will only have an effect on a Pokemon of the opposite gender. When a Pokemon is infatuated, it's a coin toss as to what happens next; either they'll attack the enemy as normal, or they'll do absolutely nothing, choosing their infatuation over the battle for that turn.

Attract is a relatively little-used technique, only learned by TM in Generation II (via TM45) after you receive it from Whitney, the Goldenrod City gym leader.
8. What is Unown's only technique in battle?

Answer: Hidden Power

Although other Pokemon start to learn Hidden Power as early as Generation III, it's reserved as Unown's sole technique in "Pokemon Gold", "Silver", and "Crystal", acting as a unique normal-type move that simply deals damage and little else. Its basic nature contributes, to a small degree, to the Unown's ability to avoid classification.

Weirder still, Hidden Power is available as TM10, being able to be found at the Lake of Rage or in stock at the Celadon Department Store in Kanto.
9. What does Foresight do?

Answer: Affects Pokemon accuracy

Another move that seems like it doesn't doo much from the surface, Foresight has a couple of unique capabilities, the first of which involves potentially levelling out the user's accuracy and the foe's evasion stat, bringing the battle to an even playing field if those two elements are causing issue.

The other catch is that Foresight is a very effective technique to use against ghost-type Pokemon as it removes their invulnerability to physical attacks from both fighting-type and normal-type sources, wiping out their general ineffectiveness.

The move's capabilities increase further in later generations.
10. Some Pokemon trainers will attempt to battle you repeatedly in the game, but only if you let them. How can you do this?

Answer: By swapping phone numbers

With the introduction of Pokegear, players have access to a cell phone as of "Gold", "Silver", and "Crystal", and though this has a limit of saved numbers, you can use some of those saved slots for trainers you meet along the different routes of both Johto and Kanto. Speaking to certain trainers after you battle them may open the opportunity for them to request a rematch at a later date, and once they've healed, levelled up, and let a bit of time pass, they may choose to call you up to battle. Whether your Pokemon have levelled well past theirs is up to you; you can always lose their number if you don't want to keep up the connection.
