Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. To reach Kanto, you need to ride on which ferry?

Answer: S.S. Aqua

Once you've completed the Elite Four battles and beaten Lance, your game doesn't come to an abrupt end or roll credits. Instead, you'll be beckoned back to New Bark Town where Professor Elm will congratulate you and award you the S.S. Ticket, allowing you to catch a ride on the super-fast S.S. Aqua ferry at the Olivine City pier.

There's a bit to do on this ride as it heads over to Kanto, but all said and done, it will drop you off in Vermilion City and allow you to take your first steps in a new but familiar land, albeit in a bit of a different order from the original Generation I adventure.
2. You won't be added to the Hall of Fame until you complete all sixteen of the game's gyms.

Answer: False

Although this certainly will happen when you have sixteen badges in-hand, trainers are only inducted into the Hall of Fame when they defeat the Pokemon Champion and conclude their ascent in the Indigo Plateau. This means that you will be logged into the Johto Hall of Fame upon beating Lance (at eight badges) and then get added to the Kanto Hall of Fame upon your revisit at the end of that adventure (with sixteen badges in-hand). Being logged to the Hall of Fame allows the (up to) six Pokemon in your part to get their stats tracked as well.
3. The Magnet Train allows you to travel between Goldenrod City in Johto and what Kanto destination?

Answer: Saffron City

Running around Goldenrod City in Johto you'll no doubt find the Magnet Train Station waiting and inoperable. The only way to make use of it is by visiting Kanto where, unfortunately, someone from Team Rocket will have taken a key component of the whole system. If you can collect that piece from someone in Cerulean City's gym, return it to the Power Plant for installation, then find a train pass (from someone else in Saffron City), then you can ride the train and have quick, unbroken travel between Goldenrod and Saffron-- the two largest cities-- on a smooth maglev trip.
4. Which of these Kanto locations is accessible when you visit in "Gold", "Silver", or "Crystal"?

Answer: The Game Corner in Celadon City

Although the adventure through "Red", "Blue" and "Yellow" held many key landmarks, a lot of them, you'll find, have changed since that first, memorable visit, partly due to events that have occurred between games and partly due to a need to restrict the amount of to-dos upon revisiting Kanto. While the Game Corner in Celadon is still operational (and gives different rewards from Goldenrod City's Game Corner), Celadon City itself is a bit smaller.

The fossil/Mt. Moon museum in Pewter City will be closed this time around, even if everything else is open, while the Safari Zone will be sealed entirely (you can go to the National Park in Johto instead). The Bike Shop in Cerulean City will be shuttered as well, which is fine since you'll have the Bicycle from Goldenrod City. Interestingly, they're the same proprietors, just setting up shop elsewhere.
5. There is no longer a direct, underground path between Celadon City and which other location?

Answer: Lavender Town

One way to get around Kanto, originally, was by taking extensive underground pathways or cave systems from point A to point B, often travelling beneath the central Saffron City to reach other locations in advance, but in "Gold", "Silver", and "Crystal", this is a little less necessary as your Pokemon should be well equipped for travel and your inventory should be topped off with speedier modes of transportation.

While the tunnel connecting Cerulean and Vermilion will still be active, as will the Diglett Cave, the passage connecting Celadon City and Lavender Town will be shuttered. You can simply pass through Saffron City if you need to go from one to the other.
6. Two new gym leaders take up spots in Kanto's gym roster. One is to replace Giovanni. Which other is replaced?

Answer: Koga

The reason is simple: Koga has been promoted to a spot on the Elite Four in Generation II, taking the second slot amongst the group to remain a key opponent, just happening to appear before you even step foot in Kanto. Instead, you'll find his daughter, Janine, handing out the Soul Badge and taking on the poison-type work in Fucshia City's facilities.

Because Giovanni will have receded from the public eye after the events of Generation I, his spot in Viridian City will be taken by Blue, the rival player from "Red", "Blue", and "Yellow", and he'll use a mix of Pokemon to protect the Earth Badge.
7. At some point between the events of Generation I and Generation II, a volcanic eruption will have mostly-destroyed Cinnabar Island. Where is its gym rebuilt?

Answer: Seafoam Islands

In Generation I, Cinnabar Island is one of the later destinations of the game(s) as it requires Surf (HM03) to be accessed, and the use of that is reliant on your acquired badges. This fire-type destination is in a bit of an apt spot since Cinnabar is known for its proximity to an active volcano, and at some point between the games, an eruption will have knocked out some of its key locations (including a burned-down tower and the gym).

While the island will still host a PokeCenter, the gym will be rebuilt on the Seafoam Islands to the east and still be headed by Blaine.

The islands, which formerly contained a cave system filled with ice and water-type Pokemon will be otherwise sealed off.
8. Which Pokemon can not be caught in Kanto and, thus, does not appear in "Pokemon Gold", "Silver", or "Crystal" without trading it in?

Answer: Articuno

All said and done, the vast majority of Generation I Pokemon make reappearances in Generation II, both in terms of being fought and caught, though there are some notable exceptions. For instance, you can not catch the Kanto starters or their evolutions in "Gold", "Silver", and "Crystal" and will instead need to trade them in to add them to your roster (and yes, that is possible with Bill's Time Capsule and either a real-life Link Cable or a Transfer Pack for "Pokemon Stadium 2").

Additionally, all legendaries are right out-- the birds found at Seafoam Islands, the Power Plant, and Victory Road aren't found where they should be, nor is Mewtwo in the Cerulean Cave.

You'll also be unable to obtain the fossil Pokemon since the lab designed to revive them, found on Cinnabar Island, was destroyed in the volcanic event. This means no Kabuto, Omanyte, or Aerodactyl.
9. How many Snorlax can be fought and caught in Kanto during "Pokemon Gold", "Silver", and "Crystal"?

Answer: One

To be fair, you could only find two of these large Pokemon in "Pokemon Red", "Blue", and "Yellow", and each time they were taking up enough space on Routes 12 and 16 to block the way into Saffron City completely; you needed to get the PokeFlute from Lavender Town to wake them up, commence battle, and clear the paths.

In Generation II, you only get one shot. There's a single Snorlax waiting in Vermilion City, and you get the one shot to catch or defeat it. Presumably, the other Snorlax was caught by the player trainer in Generation I, leaving the other to do its thing.
10. Once you defeat the Elite Four for a second time (at the end of your Kanto adventure), who is the Pokemon Champion?

Answer: Red

When all is said and done, you have sixteen badges, and you're ready to face the Elite Four again, you'll find that the last Pokemon Champion to overcome is the reigning champion from Generation I, 'Red', the presumed player trainer. Overcoming this fight brings on the official end of "Pokemon Gold", "Silver", and "Crystal", concluding one of the lengthier mainline titles of the series with double the gym objectives of virtually any other.

Red fights with a Snorlax, an Espeon (presumably his only major new acquisition since it's a Johto Eeveelution), and versions of all of Generation I's starters, specifically Pikachu, Venusaur, Blastoise, and Charizard. All Pokemon in this fight are in levelled between 73 and 81. It is the toughest trainer fight, by numbers, in the game.
