Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For starters, I am getting ready to go to work. But, before I do, I head to the end of the road I live on to find a Pokestop. I want to collect some items from it. What must I do?

Answer: Swipe the circular image of the Pokestop to spin it

Pokestops can be found at many landmarks and public buildings, such as statues and churches. By visiting a Pokestop you can get items to use in the game including Pokeballs, potions, berries, eggs, etc. Very, very, very rarely, when you spin a Pokestop, it may spawn a random wild Pokemon next to it.
2. As well as getting some Pokeballs from the Pokestop I also got an egg. I put it in an incubator, but what else must I do to hatch it?

Answer: Walk the required number of kilometers

To hatch eggs in "Pokemon Go" requires walking a set distance with the egg in an incubator. The distance required to hatch an egg is listed underneath it on the eggs screen of the game. The distance required is either 2.5km, 5km or 10km with the longer distance eggs containing rarer Pokemon.

With the advent of each new season, the possible Pokemon which can be received from different sized eggs changes. The available egg spawn can also change to fit a particular event happening in-game. The only thing about eggs which remain consistent regardless of what is happening, is that eggs which require the player to walk more will reward them with more Stardust when the egg finally hatches.
3. A wild Drowzee appears. What do I need to do to catch it?

Answer: Use my phone's touchscreen to 'throw' a Pokeball at it

To catch Pokemon in "Pokemon Go" you need to 'throw' a Pokeball at them. You do this by using your phone's touch screen to move an animated Pokeball at the Pokemon. Make sure you're accurate with your throw or else the Pokeball will miss! Sometimes Pokemon escape from the Pokeball when first caught meaning you have to try again with a new Pokeball.

To better improve one's chances of successful capture, Razz Berries and Golden Razz Berries will straight up increase the chances of a given ball capturing the Pokemon. If you're having trouble because the Pokemon continues to swat your ball away, a Nanab Berry will disable its ability to move at all, lining you up with an easy shot. Finally, if you want to earn more candies from the Pokemon you're trying to catch, you'd need to use a Pinap or Silver Pinap Berry to double the candies received.

If you're out of berries completely, you can still improve your chance by throwing a curveball at your target, and landing the ball inside the small colored circle at the center of them. The smaller the circle you land the ball in, the higher your catch odds become.
4. Awesome! Catching that Drowzee has given me enough XP to reach the next trainer level. As I'm now at level 5 I can join a team, which one of the following could I not join as it's not a real Pokemon Go team?

Answer: Astute

There are three teams players can join in "Pokemon Go". There's Mystic, the blue team led by Blanche, Valor, the red team led by Candela and Instinct, the yellow team led by Spark. Being a member of a team lets you interact with Pokegyms in the game.

When this game came out in 2016, the subject of which team you were on was of far greater social concern. As the years carried on, the only significant differences that were had based on which team you picked would be gaining minor rewards for winning a raid in a gym your team controlled, or having control of said gym. Generally, the decision of which team you should choose can be made based on which team you think is coolest, or which team your friend joined.
5. I'd like to increase the Combat Power of my Raticate by powering it up. What do I need to do this?

Answer: Enough stardust and candy

Powering up a Pokemon in "Pokemon Go" increases it's Combat Power and HP making it more useful in gym battles and training. To power up a Pokemon you need to have collected the required amount of stardust and that Pokemon's candy, the amount is different depending on the sort of Pokemon and how strong it is already.

The amount needed is displayed next to the power up button on the screen that shows you info about that Pokemon. Stardust is earned when a player levels up, catches a Pokemon or hatches an egg. Extra Stardust can be obtained by first using a Star Piece, as this will then increase Stardust gains by 1.5x for the next half an hour.
6. I decide to fight my friend, who has a tough team, in player-versus-player combat. We are not in a tournament, just hanging out. We go to enter the Great League, and I'm really looking forward to showing my friend how powerful my Mewtwo is. But when it's time to make my team, the game does not allow me to use my Mewtwo. What is one possible explanation for this?

Answer: Mewtwo's Combat Power is too high

Any and all Pokemon can be used in the Great League, with the condition that their CP is 1500 exactly or lower. It is completely impossible to get a regular Mewtwo with a CP of lower than 1500. Even one caught fresh from a raid has a higher CP than this, and it is not possible to get a Mewtwo with a lower CP than one caught through a raid. It is possible to obtain a Shadow Mewtwo which is eligible for the Great League, but not a regular one.

In some extra niche circumstances, some player designed tournaments may allow for players to 'strike' or, temporarily ban, Pokemon ahead of time. Traditionally, this features two players taking turns striking one Pokemon each until each player has struck two Pokemon.

But, in a casual setting, this does not exist and the game itself does not support such a feature.
7. I've put my Meowth into the gym and now I'm continuing to move around and hunt for Pokemon. I've just entered a local park when a wild Pidgey appears and I manage to catch it. I've caught a few Pidgeys already and want to evolve one into a Pidgeotto. What do I need to have collected to do this?

Answer: Enough Pidgey candy

To evolve a Pokemon in "Pokemon Go" you need to have collected the required amount of that Pokemon's candy. You can get candy when you catch that Pokemon, hatch an egg containing that Pokemon or transfer that Pokemon to Professor Oak. Different Pokemon require different amounts of candy to evolve for example it only takes 12 Pidgey candy to evolve it into Pidgeotto but it takes 400 Magikarp candy to evolve it into Gyarados.
8. In a regular "Pokemon" game, there are some situations in which a Pokemon will take absolutely zero damage from an attack. For example, the Flying typing is completely immune to the move Earthquake and won't take any damage from it. Is this the case in "Pokemon Go", and is it possible for a move to deal absolutely zero damage?

Answer: No

There are no immunities whatsoever in this game. Instead, attacks which would be immune in a mainline "Pokemon" game are instead 4x resisted. So for example, Lugia (Psychic/Flying type) will take the same damage from Earthquake as it would a Fighting type move, since Lugia's typing lets it resist Fighting by 4x, and the Flying typing by itself lets it resist Ground by 4x.

On the other hand, Charizard's Flying typing gives it that 4x resistance, but this is lessened by its Fire typing, as Fire is normally weak to Ground. Therefore, Charizard only 2x resists Ground.

Butterfree's Flying typing gives it that 4x resistance to Ground, which is then enhanced by its Bug typing that resists Ground even more, increasing the total to 6x. Butterfree is not literally immune to Ground in this game, but it will take such tiny damage from a Ground move that you may be misled in believing that it is.
9. I send my Gyarados to a gym to look after it for the day while I'm at work. I get the notification that it has since been defeated by someone and returned to my possession. I would like to use my Gyarados again, but it has been KOed. What item do I need to use on it?

Answer: Revive

When a Pokemon reaches zero HP through any means, it faints and cannot take part in further battles. To heal it, you need to use a revive item on it. A standard Revive will restore half the Pokemon's total HP while a Max Revive will restore all the Pokemon's HP. A Potion can be used to regain the rest of the Pokemon's HP but it doesn't work if they have fainted.

If attempting a really challenging raid boss, such as a T6 Mega Raid for example, it is heavily recommended that the player have Max Revives, instead of regular versions, on hand. The reason for this is that particularly challenging raid bosses, such as Mega Rayquaza, are basically guaranteed to wipe out the player's entire team and force them to revive it. The player's "down time" is lessened if they only need to use Max Revives instead of use regular Revives, then have to heal to full with Potions. In a challenging raid, time is the enemy, so any means of saving time are highly appreciated.
10. I've had a fun time playing "Pokemon Go" today but now it's time to go home and stop playing for the day. I've just got one final question though, which company was responsible for developing the "Pokemon Go" game?

Answer: Niantic

Niantic was started in 2010 by John Hanke. The company has specialised in location based and augmented reality apps, both of which are key features of "Pokemon Go". Niantic announced in 2015 that they were working on "Pokemon Go" and the game was released in July 2016.
