Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the best known comedy sketches is "Who's on First?", performed by Abbott and Costello in 1937. Only 20 years later, where was a gold record of the performance put on display?

Answer: National Baseball Hall of Fame

"Who's on First?" is arguably the first classic comedy sketch. Eighty years after first being performed, most people have still heard of it. Just before the final live performance in 1957, a gold record of "Who's on First?" was placed in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.
2. One of George Carlin's famous 70's stand-up routines focused on words that were banned by the FCC. He was then arrested for violating obscenity laws. By what name is this routine known?

Answer: Seven Dirty Words

Commonly called "Seven Words", this piece signaled Carlin's switch from tame, run-of-the-mill comedy to the more visceral social commentary he became famous for. The resulting trial ended with the judge declaring that Carlin's "Seven Dirty Words" performance was protected under freedom of speech.
3. Richard Pryor, well-known for his uncensored stand-up, is also famous for appearing in several movies with which other famous comedic actor?

Answer: Gene Wilder

Pryor made four movies with Gene Wilder: "Silver Streak", "Stir Crazy", "See No Evil, Hear No Evil", and "Another You". Richard Pryor was also intended to co-star with Wilder in Mel Brooks' "Blazing Saddles", when, ironically, Pryor's reputation for foul-mouthed stand-up prevented him from taking the role, which when to Cleavon Little.
4. What prestigious New York music and acting school did Robin Williams attend, having received a full scholarship?

Answer: Juilliard

He attended for three years, leaving at the end of his junior year in 1976. Both the school's director and his instructor's opinion was that there was nothing else they could teach him, calling Williams a genius. In 1991, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Juilliard.
5. This prop comedian, wildly popular in the 1980s, wielded a sledgehammer called Sledge-O-Matic and terrorized watermelons and other fruit through 14 TV specials. Who is this comedian?

Answer: Gallagher

Gallagher was so popular at the time that, after turning down many previous requests (he wasn't a fan of prop comedy), Johnny Carson had him appear twice on his show. According to Gallagher, he hated watermelons because, as a child, he dropped one and broke two toes.
6. George Burns, as famous for his cigar smoking as well as comedy, sparked a minor controversy in his youth, forgotten today, by marrying Gracie Allen, a Catholic. Why did their marriage not conform to society's expectations?

Answer: He was Jewish.

Burns' family were Jewish immigrants, and George had to change his name to hide his Jewish heritage in order to get a job. Gracie Allen was Irish Catholic, and their marriage broke a social taboo of the time. Burns later wrote in his book that he was more afraid of what his mother would say than anything else.
7. Reviving the popularity of ventriloquism in America, Jeff Dunham experienced a resurgence of popularity in the early 2000s when Comedy Central aired which special?

Answer: Arguing With Myself

"Arguing With Myself" came into being because Jeff Dunham was tired of Comedy Central's refusal to give him more air time. Filmed in Santa Ana, California in 2005, Comedy Central finally relented and aired the show in 2006. It became the most-watched program on the network, and reinvigorated Dunham's career.
8. Bob Hope, one of the most prolific comedians ever, tirelessly entertained soldiers during peace and war, making 57 tours between 1941 and 1991. How was he honored in 1997, for his 60 years of service to our soldiers?

Answer: He was made an honorary veteran.

In 1997, Congress declared Bob Hope an Honorary Veteran of the U.S. military. He was the first civilian to be given such an honor. Hope said there was no greater recognition he could receive than to be numbered among the men and women he held in such high regard.
9. Which comedian is known best for his work on "Saturday Night Live", including impersonating Ross Perot and George Bush in 1992 and from the Hans and Franz sketches first airing in 1987?

Answer: Dana Carvey

Dana Carvey disappeared from the spotlight in the late 90s due to a botched surgery. He never really made a comeback, preferring to spend time with his family, especially after appearing in a couple movies notable only for how horrible they were.
10. Unbelievably famous for gracing us with his red outfit in "Delirious" and the wonderful 1980's hit "Party All the Time", is which comedian, known as much for his disastrous failures as for his successes?

Answer: Eddie Murphy

Starting his career by emulating Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy has had a rocky career. From the heights of "Saturday Night Live" and "Eddie Murphy Raw", he tumbled into "The Adventures of Pluto Nash", from which not even "Shrek" or "Madagascar" has been able to save him.
