Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Espella first meets Layton, the Great Witch sneaks in to capture her. Here, we get a real taste of her power through a variety of magic spells. Which of the spells she used in the following scene was done with an incantation?

Answer: Knocking Espella unconscious

The spell in question is Fainfol, which is brought up again in the final Witch Trial. Whoever hears this incantation will pass out immediately. This is the only spell in the Prologue that's actually spoken.
2. When Phoenix Wright first meets Espella, she's a student accused of assaulting the ship's cook, Olivia Aldente, with a lead pipe as well as attempting to steal items. Who was eventually revealed to have actually struck Olivia from behind?

Answer: It was never stated

While it seems implied that Darklaw, aka the "Great Witch", managed to sneak onboard and protect Espella from Olivia by striking her... the game doesn't actually confirm if that's what happened. Not after the trial in question, and it kind of gets dropped by the time Darklaw's revealed to be the villain.

Espella's moreso found innocent due to the investigation being thoroughly flawed, and the impossibility of her having done anything wrong. This is probably the only case across Ace Attorney where a crime goes unsolved in this way. Don't worry, Olivia was guilty of stealing and assault herself, so we've got our Turnabout.
3. Once Layton and Luke enter Labyrinthia, they eventually encounter the legendary Phoenix Wright with his assistant Maya Fey. Quite the passionate fellow for his line of duty, what does Nick introduce himself as?

Answer: A baker

Out of all the things to become, Phoenix and Maya work at a bakery for the even more passionate Patty Eclair. Nick is a bit... aggressive in how he handles his dough though. Perhaps from his habit of pounding his desk all the time during court.
4. Wright and Maya weren't the only "Ace Attorney" characters planned to appear. While Miles Edgeworth does make a cameo during the final cutscene and in a bonus episode, who else notably had concept art but was never added in "Layton vs Wright"?

Answer: Larry Butz

Larry Butz was a childhood friend of Wright and Edgeworth, noteworthy for his childish behavior, terrible luck, and an insistence of hitting on every female he comes across. As they say, "When something smells, it's usually the Butz". Perhaps it's a good idea he didn't get in after all...

Thankfully Labyrinthia has its own troublemaker to worry about, Mr. Emeer Paunchenbaug.
5. Throughout the Witch Trials, Phoenix Wright is taken out of his comfort zone with unique court practices Labyrinthia uses. Which of the following is not one of these gimmicks?

Answer: Viewing the victim's memories

Taking place in a medieval setting, Labyrinthia has no forensic science; no fingerprints and no luminol. Ema Skye would hate it here... However it does introduce multiple witnesses you must cross examine, sometimes reacting to each other's statements where you must "question" them about as you shift your line of conversation. The Grand Grimoire is an alternate source of evidence which lists known spells and their rules, which is crucial in finding contradictions.

Viewing victim memories rather comes in "Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice", via the Divination Seance. I'm not sure if this would fly very well in a town that hates magic though.
6. The murder of the famed alchemist, Newton Belduke, was the one unsolved case that Labyrinthia's Knights of the Inquisition couldn't figure out for 3 months. Which of the following was how this case was particularly unique from all other witch crimes the Inquisition faced, as stated by Barnham?

Answer: The Storyteller hadn't scripted it

It was stated that every incident involving witches is written out by The Storyteller before they happen, like a prophecy or a script. A witch would then commit the crime before getting caught and convicted in a Witch Trial. So it wouldn't be much of a surprise that it would be a little difficult to solve when the actions of Belduke and his butler, Jean Greyerl, go "off-script" and end up resulting in this locked room mystery.
7. In order for Professor Layton to gain access to the Grand Grimoire, the curator, Ridelle Mystere, challenges him to a pair of puzzles. Which of the following describes these puzzles?

Answer: Clock Maze

"Lost in Time" and "Out of Time" are the two puzzles Ridelle presents, where Layton must navigate to the end while the clocks rotate on every move. Phoenix Wright solves two chalice puzzles in Rouge's Tavern a ways later on ("Chalice Challenge" and optionally "More Chalices!").
8. Towards the very end of the story, it turns out that The Storyteller, aka Arthur Cantabella, is the CEO of a major facility. This facility appears to be strongly inspired by which other organization, in fact being an anagram?

Answer: Umbrella

The Umbrella Corporation was the major antagonist group of "Resident Evil", primarily a pharmaceutical company making cosmetics, medical products, but most of all bio-organic weapons. Cantabella's Labrelum Inc also deals in pharmaceutics, meanwhile making an ink that can alter a person's memories and beliefs. Said ink and other developments were used in a government-approved secret experiment in "Project Labyrinthia".

Shadaloo was M Bison's criminal organization in "Street Fighter", Targent is led by Bronev in "Professor Layton", and Tsuzurao was a priestess in "Okami" (not even a company).
9. Layton's apprentice, Luke Triton, is gifted with what special ability that helps the group where possible?

Answer: Communicating with animals

Luke has successfully spoken with Espella's cat Eve, Barnham's dog Constantine, and helped get a parrot named Cracker to testify on the stand. Not the first time Nick's done that last one.

Channeling spirits is Maya Fey's ability, for example her sister Mia during her home games. This is never actually utilized in "Layton vs Wright" though, Maya only mentioning being a spirit medium a few times.
10. The Vigilantes are a wild bunch appearing in the final trial, consisting of a whopping ten characters Wright needs to keep up with! One of these characters is familiar though, having went by what name last time we saw him?

Answer: Wordsmith

Wordsmith was one of the five witnesses from Wright's first trial in Labyrinthia, appearing to have since been recruited as the tenth position of the Vigilantes. However, he ends up recounting that incident a few times, confusing the scenes of two bandits igniting for a whole fire dragon manifesting.
11. The Great Witch was an odd character in her role. She's made numerous appearances, starting from the Prologue all the way to meeting Layton and Maya after their supposed demise. Which of the following has NOT been stated or seen to be accurate regarding this masked woman?

Answer: The Great Witch is Bezella

The Great Witch has used a few spells such as Fainfol and Goldor. However, paradoxically, she doesn't actually "use magic"; her Shade minions have no concept of magic despite her being a "Witch", the Shades in fact existing to fabricate magic in the first place. Her true identity being High Inquisitor Darklaw, she's the true antagonist going through a revenge scheme where she takes over the Story after her father committed suicide.

The Great Witch Darklaw would go on to state that she is not Bezella, and she was never intended to be the Great Witch told in the legends.
12. During the Golden Court, we learn that the gems used in a witch's sceptre can be forged, or fake. A fake crystal will float when placed in water, which is how Famalia was proven to be a forgery.

Answer: False

It is the real magic gems which float in water, due to all magic gems being made from minerals less dense than water. Famalia sank during the test, therefore was not made from those same minerals.

...Although interestingly enough, all magic gems are "fake", as magic's actually carried out by Shades to maintain an illusion and not actually sourcing power from the gems. You'd have to wonder if this even mattered anyways.
13. Some Special Episodes were released a year after the game launched, adding a bit more characterization and fun into the world. To celebrate, the cast meets up at Layton's office, enjoying some nice cups of tea. How many cups are consumed in all in this scene?

Answer: 17

As a general rule, Layton never drinks more than seventeen cups of tea during any given puzzle... Or was that Diego?
14. At the end of the game, Darklaw talks a little bit about her plan. She brought in Professor Layton because she wanted to take advantage of his desire for mystery solving. Why'd she bring Phoenix Wright into Labyrinthia?

Answer: Just an unlucky chance

It was only by chance Wright ended up defending Espella after she happened to board the wrong boat at the wrong time, and it was chance that he was so adamant about proving her innocent. Darklaw would just have to lure him into Labyrinthia, where he wouldn't be able to risk the secrecy of Espella's true identity, or some such reason.

He never had much role in the plot outside of just doing lawyer things.
15. During the first Witch Trial, witness testimony had been used to try sketching a recreation of what they had seen. However, there was a major discrepancy Wright would reveal about the sketch in what it shows, being revealed by which piece of evidence?

Answer: The milk bucket

Since the Talia Magica was invisible and everyone was convinced Espella was the witch, the witnesses were forced to speculate on how the staff had been held for her to cast the spell Ignaize. One argument would be that Espella had been holding it in the same hand she had her bucket of milk in. It would seem possible, as the sketch shows the handle being made from rope...

Except when Wright manages to see the actual bucket for himself, it's solid wood with two large extensions up the side. This meant that it would be impossible for Espella to have held the sceptre.
