Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where does this boss fight take place?

Answer: Throne of Want

Funny enough, about halfway through their playthrough, the player would have come to Drangleic Castle and possibly totally unknowingly walked right past the entrance into the Throne of Want. It is situated to the side of the King's Gate bonfire in Drangleic Castle, about a ten second walk away.

Even if the player knows very well where the Throne of Want is, they can't access it when they arrive upon it initially anyway since it requires the King's Ring.
2. Both the Watcher and the Defender have the exact same resistances, with one exception. What is the Defender weak to?

Answer: Magic

The Defender carries a 20% weakness to Magic, and nothing else. Meanwhile, the Watcher is just not weak to anything at all, instead resisting Magic by 20%. Both Watcher and Defender have a completely neutral 0% resistance towards all forms of melee, so choosing to clash swords, clubs or spears with them will work just fine. Maybe pack a couple of Aromatic Oozes for the Defender.
3. This fight yields the most possible NPC summons out of any fight in the entire game. How many different choices does the player have for NPC summon?

Answer: Four

Benhart of Jugo is one summonable option, and this fight can indeed be used to progress his questline. However, this is without a doubt the most difficult fight in the game to keep Benhart alive for due to the fact the player is fighting two enemies at once. Benhart cannot 1v1 either the Throne Watcher or Defender, meaning the player will have to juggle the Throne Duo a bit and make sure they are not left alone with Benhart for long.

Head of Vengarl is a summonable option, just as long as the player has completed his brief questline beforehand.

Bradley of the Old Guard can be a summonable NPC, but he carries one prerequisite: the player must have taken all the steps necessary to ensure their final boss fight is with Aldia, Scholar of the First Sin, and not with Nashandra. Nashandra is the default final boss of the entire game, but Aldia functions as a "secret final boss" who the player has to go off the main path of progression very slightly in order to "unlock". Bradley will help the player with Throne Duo, Nashandra and Aldia, but only if the player is set up to actually fight Aldia.

Finally, Bashful Ray can be summoned with a bit of care. The player must enter the room opposite the Throne of Want door to access Ray's summon sign, where they can then guide Ray over to the Throne of Want and have him partake in the ensuing boss fight. Note that the player must have fully lit the room Ray's sign is in for Ray to be summonable.

Worth noting, the player cannot actually summon more than three allies for this fight, so they can't choose all four of their NPC options. Of course, if the player summons a friend, that counts as an ally, meaning they'd then be limited to two of the four NPCs.
4. This is a duo boss fight against two separate enemies. If one of them goes down, the other one must quickly be taken out too. Otherwise, what will happen?

Answer: Watcher and Defender can revive each other

The player cannot actually reduce the health bar of either boss to 0. Even if doing enough damage to achieve this, their health cannot drop beneath 1 so long as the other one is still alive. If one of their health bars hits 1, they will kneel to the ground and become stationary. After exactly 25 seconds, the alive one will approach the stationary one, channel magic for a very long time, then upon completing the channeling, restore their fallen ally to completely full health.

Because of this, the player would be best suited carefully managing the Throne Duo's health bars. Instead of focusing on one until it is dead, the player should distribute damage as evenly as possible throughout the fight.

Once both Throne Defender and Watcher are both simultaneously reduced to 1 hit point left, they will both immediately die and the fight will be over.
5. This dynamic duo made sure not to be too offensively one dimensional. Which of the following is true?

Answer: Watcher wields Lightning, Defender wields Magic

When reaching roughly one third of their health bar, these two bosses will put their shields away, begin to two-hand their sword, and will then buff it with their element of choice. The buffs last one full minute, but the pair can re-apply the buff as many times as they want.

The Rebel Greatshield is a good idea for navigating through this, as it boasts high defense towards elements of all kinds, letting it shine against a multi-faceted boss such as this. The Havel's Greatshield is also standout for the same reason, as well as offering perfect physical absorption.

For those who can't afford heavy greatshields, the Dispelling Ring can essentially be a poor man's Rebel Greatshield in this context. Similar idea for the Ring of Steel Protection juxtaposed to the Havel's Greatshield.
6. On defeat, the player will acquire both the Throne Watcher Soul and Throne Defender Soul. These Souls can be used to acquire the weapon and shield wielded by the two bosses at hand. What blacksmith can the player trade these Boss Souls to?

Answer: Weaponsmith Ornifex

Interestingly, Ornifex charges far, far less souls to handle these particular Boss Souls than she does any other Boss Soul. She never comments as to why this is, and there's nothing in the lore concretely pointing out a reason as to why. It only costs three thousand souls to convert either of these Boss Souls into equipment, when it typically costs ten thousand or more.
7. The Throne Watcher Shield, earned from his Boss Soul, may seem really small, weak and unimposing. However, it is unique for being a Small Shield that can attain 100% absorption against something. What can the Throne Watcher Shield perfectly block?

Answer: Lightning

The Throne Watcher Shield is one of just two Small Shields in the entire game which can attain 100% absorption against something. With a Lightning infusion, this becomes reality. Even without the Lightning infusion, this shield still has 93% Lightning absorption at +5, which is really strong. It comes with a usable 90% absorption against Physical, which is incredibly strong for a Small Shield. The low Stability Small Shields are saddled with does hold it back to an extent, but it is still excellent at holding back Lightning specifically.

The other Small Shield in the game which can fully block something is the Magic Shield which, you'll never guess, can fully absorb Magic. Like the Watcher Shield, it does require an infusion of Magic to attain this 100% absorption.
8. The Defender's Greatsword, earned through the Throne Defender Soul, can uniquely buff itself with Magic using its two-handed Parry button (L2). When comparing the Defender's Greatsword buff to the Aromatic Ooze Magic buff, which applies a greater Magic buff?

Answer: Defender's Greatsword

Though this does cost 10 Durability and should be handled with care, the ensuing buff is the single largest weapon buff in the entire game, embarrassing Aromatic Ooze (200 base Magic damage vs 75 base Magic damage) and even outperforming Crystal Magic Weapon (175), the strongest Magic buff outside of this in the entire game.

Funny enough, the Throne Defender himself is weak to Magic. Turning his own weapon against him on New Game Plus and higher is actually surprisingly optimal.
9. After defeating the Throne Duo, the armor sets for both, sized down to be appropriate for the player, will be added to a merchant's inventory. Which merchant is it?

Answer: Maughlin the Armorer

Like with the rest of his unlockable cosmetics, Maughlin will not add the Throne Duo sets to his wares if he has been previously killed. Unfortunately for the player, if they've waited this long and kept him alive until this stage of the game, there really isn't a point to killing him this deep into the game anyway. But, hypothetically, if the player did want to kill him for that sweet Tseldora set, but also wanted the Throne Duo set to then be available in his inventory, they'd need to wait to kill him until after beating the Throne Duo.
10. If beating the Throne Duo on New Game Plus or higher, they'll now drop a ring on defeat. Which ring is it?

Answer: Ring of the Evil Eye

The Ring of the Evil Eye gives the player a flat amount of health restoration anytime they or one of their allies kills an enemy. The variant received through this fight is +2, the strongest of its kind. At +2, the player will receive 80 HP every time this ring procs its effect. Sadly, it's totally useless during almost every boss fight in this game, making its only use during the run up to the boss.

In that regard, this ring isn't useless, but it is extremely niche. It typically finds its home on dedicated regen builds, which usually wield the self-bleeding Chaos Blade or Lost Sinner's Sword, paired with the Ring of Restoration, Crown of the Ivory King and possibly the Wicked Eye Greatshield for maximized passive health regeneration.
