Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In this game, the player plays as Stella, who fills in for Charon, Ferryman of the Damned. The goal is to allow safe passage for those who are soon to depart from the world, unto the Everdoor where they can formally pass away. What game is this?

Answer: Spiritfarer

This is a unique "cozy" game that aims to mesh a very unique topic in with farm and property management. Throughout the game, the player will welcome numerous "Spirits" onto their ship. The goal is to fulfill the 'requests' these Spirits make, which are usually fairly mundane requests such as feeding them their favor meal or making their living situation on the ship just a bit more pleasant. Once satisfied, the Spirit may be taken to the Everdoor.

A very slightly more real-world parallel is, imagine if you were tasked with filling out someone's bucket list before basically driving them to the gates of Heaven itself, to see them and their very mortal existence off. That's "Spiritfarer" in a nutshell.
2. In this game, a campaign mode called "Subspace Emissary" sees an enormous crew full of various video game icons eventually band together as one to fight the evil Tabuu, who seeks to wipe out all of existence. What video game does this take place in?

Answer: Super Smash Bros Brawl

This, personally, is my favorite campaign in a video game I've ever played. It is truly amazing just how much detail and complexion was jam-packed into a completely and wholly silent narrative. In it, the player's roster size is limited but in very fitful, interesting ways.

Then, towards the very end, the gloves come off and the player can use basically whomever they want for the final stretch of the game. It is an incredibly long, interesting narrative culminating in an incredible boss fight with Tabuu, a character original to "Smash Bros Brawl" who is a stiff test to clear even on easier difficulties.
3. In this game, you play as a character who had been abducted onto a ship of mind flayers, with an unidentifiable wriggly bug of sorts placed into their skull. The ensuing journey sees the protagonist, with or without a crew of like-minded (literally) individuals, try to find a way to get the bug removed. What game is this?

Answer: Baldur's Gate 3

The protagonist, bearing the default name of Tav, has the opportunity to join up with a litany of other characters who can make up a very generic "D&D"-style party. The likes of Lae'zel the nimble fighter, Shadowheart the devout cleric, Astarion the sneaky rogue and Gale the brash wizard are available very early, but can later be joined by the eclectic Wyll, the tense Minthara, the incredibly iconic Minsc and more!
4. You play as police chief Jack Boyd, who is responsible for managing a squadron of police officers, balancing his relationships with a few other powerful people and his self-imposed goal of earning $500,000. What game is this?

Answer: This Is The Police

This is a simulator-esque game, played entirely from a bird's eye view of the town of Sharpton. The goal is to correctly send officers with the right skills to respond to the correct crimes, while also making sure to achieve Jack's goal of earning $500,000 in a six month stretch.
5. The entirety of the world is progressively dying off. The player must go on a long journey, where they eventually get to decide if they want to prevent this decay, or instead hasten it. What game is this?

Answer: Dark Souls 2

Each individual entry in this trilogy essentially has this premise, but because "Dark Souls 2" is my favorite video game of all time, it gets the nod in this specific context. In it, the player arrives in Drangleic, a dying world which was built upon other worlds which were lost to time.

Their grand goal is to reach the Throne of Want and access the First Flame. Here, the player can either sacrifice their very flesh as kindling to preserve the Flame and prevent the Abyss from taking over. Or, they can opt to deliberately snuff the Flame out and allow the Abyss to make its way in.
6. The zombie apocalypse has set in to Navezgane. The entire world is filled to the brim with ravenous, dangerous undead. And, every seven days, a Blood Moon will rise which invigorates them all massively. The player must make a base and survive as long as they can. What game is this?

Answer: 7 Days To Die

In this game, the player does not take control of a previously established character. They get to name, detail and dress their character however they choose. In the original PlayStation 3/4 exclusive version of this game, the player could choose one of several 'skins' modelled after numerous characters from TellTale Games' "The Walking Dead." However, these skins did not return in the remake of the game, which was made for the PS4/5, XBox One/Series X and PC.
7. In this game, the player takes control of several, likely dozens, of randomly generated survivors who are doomed to die. This roguelike game sees them try to travel from the simple Suburbs, through an entire town, then deep down into Hell itself. What game is this?

Answer: Last Stand: Aftermath

The entire "Last Stand" series began in 2007, with the first game of the same name. This was exclusively a Flash game. This was a simple tower defense game where the player simply defended their base from zombies with a selection of different weapons.

The next entry, "Union City", was much more complex despite still only being a Flash game. This was more of an Action RPG, where the player journeyed from end to end of Union City, battling undead, rescuing a few other survivors and trying to connect Jack Davis with his abducted wife.

"Dead Zone" was an entirely new take on the franchise, an MMORPG available on numerous PC game providers, where players went through the very same Union City and fought the undead, whilst developing their own safehouse in the city and dealing with other players in the process.

Finally, the subject of this question, "Aftermath" was yet another unique entry into the franchise. It was the first "Last Stand" game to hit the big screen, being available on PC as well as XBox One, Series X and PlayStations 4 and 5. This was a roguelite game, a single player one, where the player plays as numerous survivors who are guaranteed to die. The goal is to amass enough permanent upgrades to become strong enough to go slightly farther than the last trip, until it is eventually possible to go straight to the end of the game in one go.
8. A mostly random group of adventurers all group together to overthrow a tyrannical Ivalice regime and install their choice for a ruler. What game does this happen in?

Answer: Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age

This game has a pretty incredible, if not quirky and random cast of playable characters. Balthier is absolutely the highlight, as both the voice of reason and the comedic relief. But, Vaan, Penelo, Fran, Basch and the throne-hopeful Ashe make up a highly varied, interesting group of other playable characters.
9. A group of high schoolers with special powers investigate a murder. They later find out it was a detective working under the protagonist's uncle who threw people into a television, where they typically end up dead if they appear on the Midnight Channel. What game is this?

Answer: Persona 4

The television is important, as Tohru Adachi throwing people into it causes them to arrive in the TV World, where a litany of horrible demons can bring about their end. The Investigation Team ends up rescuing many of Adachi's would-be victims until they get to the end of the game, and are eventually able to pin him for doing these deeds.
10. In this choose your own adventure game, the player takes control of a cast who stumbles upon an ancient Sumerian temple. They aren't alone, as it is filled to the brim with deadly vampires. Death is around every corner, and no one character's survival is guaranteed. What game is this?

Answer: Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes

The "Dark Pictures Anthology" is a series of stories made by Supermassive Games. They are all horror themed, choose your own adventure style. Uniquely, they do not require or even really encourage the player to ensure the survival of any one character in particular, with the exception of "Little Hope" which makes it impossible for one character in particular to ever die.

In "House of Ashes", the player oversees a small American army squad in an Iraqi station. They begin in a gunfight with other Iraqi soldiers before descending underground and finding a much deadlier adversary in ancient vampires.
