"Wild Arms": Guardians Versus Demons Quiz

This is my quiz on the role-playing game "Wild Arms", released in North America for PlayStation on April 30, 1997. It has been largely overlooked, mainly due to competition from "Final Fantasy VII", but it is still worth the occasional replay.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jack's last name was derived from a piece of armor. How is his name spelled in the North American release?

Answer: Van Burace

Jack's name was supposed to be "Vambrace", referring to a piece of armor which protects the forearm. His name was inadvertently misspelled in the original North American release; the misspelling was deliberately kept for the remake.
2. It is possible to rename Hanpan.

Answer: False

You are not given an opportunity to name him during Jack's introductory stage, and the name wagon will only rename your front character (i.e. Rudy, Jack, or Cecilia.) In the remake, you can change Hanpan's name by speaking to Ackerman in Court Seim.
3. What is the full name of the bounty hunter Calamity Jane?

Answer: Jane Maxwell

Calamity Jane is the daughter of the Arms Meister Nicholi Maxwell. Martha Jane Canary was the original Calamity Jane of the American West. Hetfield was Professor Emma's last name. Roughknight is Rudy's last name; come to think of it, maybe Jane will someday become a Roughknight!
4. How many Golems are in the game in total?

Answer: 8

This is mentioned more than once: Barbados, Berial, Diablo, Leviathan, Lolithia, Lucifer, Sado, and the Earth Golem. The Earth Golem joins your quest, while the other seven can all be fought at different points during the game.
5. Which is the first Golem that you fight?

Answer: Lolithia

You fight Lolithia in the Photosphere, midway through the game. Berial is in Malduke at the end of the game. Barbados and Sado are optional bosses who do not become available until much later; Barbados is in the desert and becomes available once you have the Gull Wing, while Sado is in the Mine Area of Malduke.
6. Jack's Grapple tool is normally only able to hook onto special pillars. What is the one other thing it can grapple?

Answer: A demon

In the Gate Generator, Zed causes the floor to collapse, believing that the party will not be able to cross. Jack proves him wrong by using the Grapple on Zed himself.
It seems that Zed learns from his "earlier" mistake, as he uses his sword to deflect the Grapple in the remake, forcing the player to find another method to cross.
7. What is the name of the first airship that you get in the game?

Answer: Proto Wing

The airship is originally named "Proto Wing," then becomes "Gull Wing" after its altitude capabilities are upgraded. Epoch is from "Chrono Trigger" and Falcon is from "Final Fantasy IV".
8. What is the name of the Guardian of Hope?

Answer: Zephyr

When you go to Baskar Village, you are told to pray for Zephyr, the "Wind of Hope." Eventually Rudy succeeds in summoning Zephyr, after Love and Courage have already been obtained. Raftina is the Guardian of Love, who is released by Cecilia; Jack summons the Guardian of Courage, Justine.

The Guardian of Desire, Luceid, accompanies Boomerang; he is not directly usable in the game. However, Luceid's power becomes part of the Bless Blade which you can obtain at the Ancient Arena. In later games of the series, Luceid joins the other three as a Guardian Lord.
9. Which of the following accessories' effects is NOT included in the effect of the Sheriff's Star?

Answer: Power Boost

The Sheriff's Star is an incredibly powerful accessory, which combines all the powers of the Force Unit (character gains force power faster), Talisman (character's hit points are restored in battle and while walking), Full Libra (character is protected from all status ailments), Orb of Power (character's maximum hit points increase by 25%), Wise Slate (character's maximum magic points increase by 25%), Missanga (character's luck increases one level), and others besides.

Unfortunately, you have to beat the hardest optional boss in the game to get it; if you're strong enough to do that, do you really need such a powerful item? The Power Boost is an accessory for Rudy alone, which gives him double attack strength 75% of the time.

The Sheriff's Star, for all its power, does not do that--not that you really need it to.
10. Although "Wild Arms" was heavily overshadowed by its contemporary, "Final Fantasy VII," it was successful enough to merit several sequels and one remake of the original game. What was the name of the remake?

Answer: Wild Arms: Alter Code F

"Wild Arms: Alter Code F" was a game for PlayStation 2, and was released in North America on November 15, 2005. The game took the characters, locations, and plot from the original and combined them with completely new graphics, sound, puzzles, and battle mechanics.

It also made five of the original game's supporting characters into playable characters, including my personal favorite, Calamity Jane.
