Recipes for Movies: Part 2

Answer: Finding Nemo

"Finding Nemo" is a 2003 Pixar animated film directed by Andrew Stanton. The story revolves around a father clownfish, Marlin, who searches the ocean for his son, Nemo, who was taken by a scuba diver. At the beginning of the film, we learn Nemo has a small right fin which was caused by an injury to his egg from an attack that killed his mother. This small fin causes his dad to be overprotective about his safety. Sick of being overprotected, while at the drop-off, Nemo disobeys Marlin and goes to touch a boat. When swimming back to Marlin, Nemo is taken by a scuba diver. While the boat drives away, a scuba mask falls into the water and Marlin attempts to find it. Along the way, early in his search, he meets Dory, a Pacific Regal Blue Tang, who has short-term memory loss. Meanwhile, Nemo is put in a fish tank of the scuba diver, who turns out to be a dentist. He meets many other fish and aquatic creatures there, all with an interest in dentistry. One of the fish Nemo meets is Bloat, a Pufferfish.

93. At the 67th Golden Globe Awards, "Avatar" won 'Best Drama Film' beating out which other 2009 movie which was directed by his ex-wife (and later won 'Best Picture' at the Oscars)?

From Quiz Movies Overshadowed by "Avatar"

Answer: The Hurt Locker

"The Hurt Locker", directed by Kathryn Bigelow, followed the story of a bomb squad in Iraq and, after its release in 2009, it won 'Best Picture' and 'Best Director' at the 82nd Academy Awards ceremony. The movie starred Jeremy Renner and it took home an additional four Oscars that night. Bigelow was once married to James Cameron, the director of "Avatar" and she also directed the 1987 vampire film "Near Dark" and the 1991 action film "Point Break". The couple ended their relationship in 1991. Aside from beating Cameron at the Oscars, Bigelow also became the first female recipient of the 'Best Director Oscar'. Because "Avatar" swept the major award at the Golden Globes, many considered it a front-runner for the main prize at the Oscars. Cameron also took home the Globe for 'Best Director' at the same event. "Inglourious Basterds" was directed by Quentin Tarantino, "Up in the Air" was directed by Jason Reitman, and "Precious" was made by Lee Daniels. All three films were up for 'Best Picture' in both ceremonies.

94. In the second volume of this Quentin Tarantino film, 'The Bride' punched her way through the lid of a coffin and dug her way to the surface. What movie was this?

From Quiz Needs...More...Oxygen...

Answer: Kill Bill

One of Quentin Tarantino's more famous films, "Kill Bill" was split into two volumes, due to its length, and it accumulated over $160,000,000 in the box office. Starring Uma Thurman, the film followed a woman seeking vengeance against the people who attempted to kill her and her child. The first volume also featured Lucy Liu and Vivica A. Fox, while the second included Daryl Hannah, Michael Madsen, and David Carradine as Bill. In the second volume of "Kill Bill", 'The Bride' (played by Uma Thurman) continued her revenge streak to attempt to bring down the final names on her hit list: Elle Driver, Budd, and Bill himself. When she reached Budd's desert trailer, she was shot in the chest with a shotgun shell full of rocksalt and subsequently buried in a coffin at the grave of Paula Shultz. Recalling her training at the hands of Pai Mei, she was able to break through the wood of the coffin and escape.

97. This George A. Romero zombie flick, released in 1985, was the third in his series. What was its name?

From Quiz Go Ahead, Make My Day

Answer: Day of the Dead

Often regarded as one of the worst of Romero's original "Of the Dead" creations, "Day of the Dead" was released in 1985, almost two decades after the original "Night of the Living Dead" (these days just drag on, don't they?). It was, coincidentally, released in the same year as Dan O'Bannon's hilarious spin-off, "Revenge of the Living Dead". Not being one to shrug off the horror remake train, "Day of the Dead" (like "Night of" and "Dawn of" before it) was graced with a remake in 2008 by Steve Miner, the director of the second and third "Friday the 13th" films in the 1980s, though it went straight-to-DVD. The original "Day of the Dead" earned $34,000,000 in the box office and was followed twenty years later by "Land of the Dead".

98. Drew Barrymore, a rather popular actress, is dispatched before the title card in this slasher satire from the 1990s. What is its name?

From Quiz The End of the Beginning

Answer: Scream

"Scream", directed by Wes Craven, was released in 1996 and became one of the most critically-enjoyed horror films released in the 1990s due to its tongue-in-cheek, satirical approach. The opening scenes featured Drew Barrymore, a major name in film, as she received a call from the killer about horror movies themselves. She was killed off in quite the graphic method before the title card for "Scream" actually appeared. All three of the first "Scream" movies followed the same pattern, killing off a character in the opening. Other early victims include Jada Pinkett, Omar Epps, and Liev Schreiber.

The American film, 'Sssssss', was released as Ssssnake' in the UK and elsewhere. Its story involved an otherwise sensible doctor who theorized that humans would not survive the future unless they became snakes, so he proceeded to turn a college student into a king cobra. Curiously, the doctor's name was "Stoner", a word that surely wouldn't have meant anything to the Aquarian-Age culture of 1973.

In the years after its release, "From Justin to Kelly" ended up getting nominated for ten Razzie Awards, winning one in 2005 for the 'Worst Musical of the Award's First 25 Years'. The movie only earned back five million dollars of its twelve million dollar budget. Clarkson's career in pop music flourished despite the movie; Guarini's didn't.

As Ted Striker, the nervous ex-pilot, Robert Hays struck a very funny John Travolta like pose on a dance floor. He talks with her and she suggests that they meet at the café the next morning. When he shows up, however, she says she doesn't recognize him. 116. The prolific director Akira Kurosawa hired leading man Toshiro Mifune for which 1954 watershed adventure film? It featured farmers who hired professional protectors to fight off bandits.

From Quiz Friends For Hire

Answer: Seven Samurai

"Seven Samurai" won several awards and is on the top of many lists for best film in the world. When a village of farmers tire of bandits stealing their crops, they hire leaderless samurai (ronin) to protect them. This was the first film to feature a team of heroes coming together to accomplish a task. In 1960 John Sturges adapted the movie to the Old West, calling it "The Magnificent Seven". Akira Kurosawa hired charismatic actor Toshiro Mifune as the star in no less than 16 of his films, beginning with "Drunken Angel" (1948) and ending in 1965 with "Red Beard", after which they had a falling out. Most Mifune roles were samurai stories, such as "The Hidden Fortress" and "Yojimbo", but there were also drama and thrillers. The influential Kurosawa directed 30 movies.

117. The first time I watched a "seat-back" film was on my first flight to England in 2002. Which 1994 romantic comedy, which made Hugh Grant an international star, did I select?

From Quiz Films on Planes

Answer: Four Weddings and a Funeral

I don't recall what the other film selections were, but since I was heading to the British Isles, I picked a British film! The popular film featured Hugh Grant as commitment-phobic Charles who was enamored with free-spirited Carrie (Andie McDowell) whom he kept meeting at several weddings, one of which was hers, and at a funeral. Her marriage didn't last, and they ended up together but without the wedding. The film won five BAFTAs and was nominated for two Academy Awards, including Best Picture. One of my favorite quotes about the film came from the American television show "Married... with Children". When Peg Bundy said that she wanted to watch "Four Weddings and a Funeral", her long-suffering husband Al said "That's kinda like five of the same thing".

118. Sigourney Weaver returned as Ripley in what 1986 action film set on LV-426 and directed by James Cameron?

From Quiz One-Word Movie Titles [2]

Answer: Aliens

"Aliens" took the lone survivor of "Alien", Ellen Ripley (and, to be fair, Jones the cat) and sent her back to the alien planet to investigate the faulty signals being sent from a human colony. When she and a troop of marines arrived, however, what they found was worse than they could have imagined. Sure enough there were more aliens in Ripley's second outing. An early work by James Cameron, the movie was extremely popular and quite well-received. It also resulted in an Oscar nomination for Weaver.

119. Name the movie: Chicago; Sam Gerard; 1993; Helen Kimble (character).

From Quiz Name That Movie: Downward Spiral With A Twist

Answer: The Fugitive

"The Fugitive" (1993) was a movie based on a 1960's TV series. When explained in a plot, it seems trite but but both TV series and movie plots are successful. The protagonist, a successful surgeon is wrongly accused of murdering his wife. He escapes from custody to clear his name, but most of the movie is spent showing how Richard Kimble evades the US Marshalls. The movie was a surprising blockbuster coming in third in 1993 with receipts with over $360 million worldwide, behind "Jurassic Park" (1993) and "Mrs Doubtfire" (1993) and edging out key movies such as "Schindler's List" (1993) and "The Firm" (1993). It brought Tommy Lee Jones an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor and assured his future as an A-list actor. The other answer options are all blockbusters from 1993.
