Mutant Noggins Say: See These Before You Die! (#2)

Answer: Swiss Family Robinson

Filmed on location on the Caribbean West Indies island of Tobago, this Disney classic is a must see for all children. The steps the family must take to survive inspires ingenuity in a young mind. One of the starring performers was James MacArthur, Helen Hayes' son and well known as Danno from the TV series "Hawaii Five-O". [Submitted by mehaul]

62. Released in 1982, I was the film debut for Broadway actors Glenn Close and John Lithgow. My title is the name of the eccentric lead character who is a wrestler/writer who struggles through life's ups and downs. My title is?

From Quiz Which Movie Am I?

Answer: The World According to Garp

"The World According to Garp" is the film I am. I was based on the novel by John Irving and the author appeared in the film as a wrestling referee. "The Hotel New Hampshire" was a novel and film based on Irving's novel. "Vision Quest" was about a champion high school wrestler played by Matthew Modine and "Hadley's Rebellion" was another teen-aged wrestler film starring Griffin O'Neal.

63. James Bond's twentieth adventure took him to North Korea, Iceland, and Cuba. Sure, it wasn't all in one day, but hey, when you have to stop a solar-powered laser from melting the ice caps, you have to act fast. What's the 2002 movie's name?

From Quiz Go Ahead, Make My Day

Answer: Die Another Day

In Pierce Brosnan's final bout as James Bond, the classic 00-agent, he and Halle Berry teamed up to take down the Koreans. Gustav Graves had control of a satellite known as the Icarus, which he planned to use to shoot concentrated beams of sunlight at any location on the planet. All the while, Bond took the time to visit fancy ice hotels, fence with Madonna and uncover this devious scheme. After "Die Another Day" was released, the Bond franchise took a turn by returning to the "Casino Royale" story to reboot the entire storyline. After its box office run finished, it had earned over $400,000,000.

64. Arthur Dent discovers that his home is being destroyed to make way for a by-pass. Soon after, he discovers that Earth is being destroyed to make way for an even bigger bypass. As Earth implodes, the title card appears for which 2005 movie?

From Quiz The End of the Beginning

Answer: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Based on Douglas Adams' best-selling book of the same name, "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" was a film that released in 2005. Although it earned over $100,000,000 in the box office, it wasn't greenlit for a sequel as more success was anticipated. "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" starred Sam Rockwell, Zooey Deschanel, and Mos Def. In the movie, Arthur and his friend, Ford, hitchhike their way off the planet Earth before it's destroyed by a fleet of Vogons. Their exploits are followed as they need to make their way around the galaxy to find the planet of Magarathea and find the meaning behind life, the universe, and everything.

65. A small time rancher is on a mission to save his family land and gain his eldest son's respect. His goal is to get the bad guy to the prison train on time. To get there he must battle both enemies and his own allies.

From Quiz Movie Titles with No "The"

Answer: 3:10 To Yuma

This movie was released in 2007. This movie has a wonderful cast including Christian Bale and Russell Crowe, and was directed by James Mangold. It is a remake of an 1957 movie with the same title.

66. Saint Nick found himself in real strife when he appeared in which 1964 movie with an utterly preposterous title?

From Quiz Utterly Outrageous Movie Titles

Answer: Santa Claus Conquers the Martians

It's true, I swear. And so will you, when you see Santa "sleigh" aliens in this unforgettable turkey which still holds its own at Worst-Ever-Film festivals. The plot had something to do with Martians who decided to kidnap Santa for the benefit of their own children, but (like the movie) not everything went to plan. Often trotted out for the kiddies at Christmas, this film could actually be bad for their elf.

67. Which star-studded comedy casts Brenda Blethyn as the object of affection of a funeral home owner (Alfred Molina) whose business is set to be annihilated by a crooked competitor (Christopher Walken)?

From Quiz Guess the Film 2

Answer: Plots with a View

This hilarious comedy, from director Nick Hurran, came even before "Six Feet Under" became a hit. Set amidst the funeral home business, a likeable man (Molina) is faced with two dilemmas: how to save his business from the hands of a scheming competitor (Walken) and how to "save" the love of his life (Blethyn) from faking her own death. The lovely Naomi Watts, Lee Evans and Jerry Springer co-star.

68. Name the greatest "C" movie that contains these roles: Victor Laszlo, Louis Reneault, and Heinrich Strasser.

From Quiz Action! ABCs (The Best Movies Alphabetically)

Answer: Casablanca

"Casablanca" was released in 1942. The film is a romantic drama set in Morocco during World War Two. The main character's ex girlfriend and husband are leaders in the rebellion against Nazi Germany. They seek his help in staying one step ahead of the Nazis who are in hot pursuit. It was based on an unproduced play called "Everybody Comes to Rick's" by Murray Burnett and John Allison. It was directed by Michael Curtiz, and starred Humphrey Bogart as Rick Blaine. It was nominated for eight Academy Awards, and won three Oscars. The awards came in the categories of Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay. The roles were played by Paul Henreid, Claude Rains, and Conrad Veidt.

69. Which movie, starring Nicolas Cage and Elisabeth Shue, was centered on the story of a raging alcoholic and his choice to give up on life?

From Quiz 10 Worst Movies of All Time

Answer: Leaving Las Vegas

"Leaving Las Vegas" was a graphic depiction of the life of an alcoholic and his conscious choice to succumb to his disease. While the acting of Cage and Shue is adept, the movie itself was a dismal display of hopelessness and despair. If you're looking for satisfaction at the resolution of a movie, this is not the choice for you.

70. By Grabthar's Hammer! What film am I referencing with these four words: Nesmith, Thermians, Beryllium, Sarris?

From Quiz 4 Words - 1 Movie

Answer: Galaxy Quest

Just before the new millennium, "Galaxy Quest" hit our cinema screens in 1999 to muted critical fanfare. Offering a fresh take on the sci-fi genre, the film follows the misadventures of Commander Peter Quincy Taggart and his crew as they are recruited by the Thermains to deal with the evil warlord Sarris... not realizing that "Galaxy Quest" is a fictional TV show with Jason Nesmith in the role of the Commander. Even the relatively simple task of securing a beryllium sphere (space ship fuel) goes gleefully awry. "Mars Attacks", "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and "Spaceballs" are all light-hearted space romps, however "Galaxy Quest" is the only one to feature Thermians, Sarris and Nesmith. Fun fact: The ship the Thermians build based on the show is the N.S.E.A Protector. Its serial number is NTE-3120 with the NTE standing for 'Not The Enterprise'.

71. Kirk Cameron led which 2014 film about 'putting the Christ back in Christmas' that received a 0% Rotten Tomatoes rating upon release?

From Quiz Boo!

Answer: Saving Christmas

Part diatribe against the secularization of the Christmas and part narrative about Christmas itself, "Saving Christmas" was seen as a big misstep for the "Growing Pains" actor. Cameron started the film by talking about all the things wrong with a modern Christmas and talking up the Biblical aspects before trying to save the season from the atheists. In response to the universal criticism for the film, Kirk Cameron asked viewers to "storm the gates" of Rotten Tomatoes. It was a bad move for him; he tanked the movie on the viewers' side too.

72. What 2010 biographical film put James Franco between a rock and a hard place as he struggled to free himself from a Utah canyon?

From Quiz Help? Anybody?

Answer: 127 Hours

While this wasn't a one-man movie (Franco encountered hikers before the fateful event happened), it did primarily feature Franco as Aron Ralston, a man who, while hiking through a Utah Canyon, ended up pinning his arm between an unmovable boulder and a canyon wall. Over the next 127 hours, he managed to amputate his arm to avoid dying alone. Both Franco and the film were nominated for Oscars. Director Danny Boyle previously won for "Slumdog Millionaire" two years earlier.

73. 1933 biographical film about unusual royalty. Greta Garbo in title role. Set in Sweden in the 1600s. What film is this?

From Quiz Three Harder Clues to a Movie

Answer: Queen Christina

While Queen Christina is portrayed in the film as dutiful and very patient and wise, nothing could have been further from the truth. The real Queen Christina was moody, distinctly unfeminine and abdicated her throne to become a hanger-on at the Vatican. She was fascinating but not in the way Garbo portrayed her. Garbo insisted that John Gilbert, a huge silent film star whose career had been crushed by his studio's boardroom politics, be hired as her love interest in the film. It would be his next to last film before he died of a heart attack.

74. Martin Brody. Ichthyologist Matt Hooper. "You're going to need a bigger boat." Which movie has all these clues in it?

From Quiz Three Clues to a Movie

Answer: Jaws

"Jaws" was Steven Spielberg's summer blockbuster that made everyone nervous about ocean swimming. The mechanical sharks used in the film were so dicey that John Williams was called upon to create a score indicating the shark's approach. Too bad Martin Brody, the Amityville sheriff, couldn't hear it. Nor could Matt Hooper, the shark expert that Brody asked for help with the rogue shark. Brody kept telling Quint, the rough sea captain who was supposed to help them kill the great white, "You're going to need a bigger boat." He was right. "The Abyss" is actually a watery science fiction story. I don't know much about the other two mov8es except that they have sharks in them.

75. What movie did Dennis Hopper NOT have a part in?

From Quiz What Movie Wasn't That Star In? II

Answer: Thunderbolt and Lightfoot

In the 1968 movie "Hang 'Em High", Dennis played the Prophet and was killed trying to escape a custody. In the 1957 movie "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral", Dennis played Billy Clanton. In the 1986 movie "Hoosiers", Dennis played Shooter, an assistant coach and drunken father of one of the team's players. The 1974 movie "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot" starred Clint Eastwood, Jeff Bridges, George Kennedy, and Geoffrey Lewis. It is a movie about a group of guys, some of whom were ex-military, who hatch a plan to rob a bank depository.

76. Which film is the character Johnny Utah in?

From Quiz Character Name To Film Title

Answer: Point Break

Keanu Reeves played Johnny Utah in Kathryn Bigelow's "Point Break" (1991). This was remade in 2015. The film is about a federal agent (Reeves) sent to infiltrate a group of surfers who are suspected of robbing banks while dressed as ex-Presidents of the United States of America.

77. One of the ten highest-grossing films of 1970 and starring Martin Balsam with Jason Robards and James Whitmore also in the cast, which 1970 film told the story of the 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor?

From Quiz Do You Remember This Film?

Answer: Tora! Tora! Tora!

'Tora' literally means "tiger" but, in this case, it was an acronym of 'totsugeki raigeki' ("lightning attack"), and was used by the Japanese attackers to confirm that the American defenders were unaware of the impending attack. Unusually, "Tora! Tora! Tora!" was co-directed by Richard Fleischer, Toshio Masuda and Kinji Fukasaku, creating a film that portrayed the events of one of the century's most historic days from both sides. Three years of preparation and eight months of filming produced an epic that, although the Academy did not particularly like it - it won only one Oscar (for Special Effects) from its five nominations, and was not even nominated in any of the major categories - has gone down as one of the classic WWII films.

78. Although his mother sings like a bird, our hero cannot. Exiled, he finds himself in a new location "under glass," although he is not a pheasant. Nevertheless, he is "discovered" and returns home a hero. Which film is this?

From Quiz Location Location Location

Answer: Happy Feet

The hero of "Happy Feet" is an emperor penguin named Mumble, whose talent lies in tap dancing, as opposed to the singing of the other emperor penguins in the story. He is voiced by Elijah Wood. The location in the question "under glass" refers to a penguin exhibit in an Australian zoo where Mumble's tap dancing ability brings him attention which eventually results in the resolution of the plot's crisis. "Happy Feet" won Best Animated Feature in the 2007 Academy Awards.

79. In which 1948 thriller does Hitchcock favorite James Stewart play Rupert Cadell, a dinner guest of two proud murderers?

From Quiz Friends For Hire

Answer: Rope

Alfred Hitchcock and Sidney Bernstein directed "Rope" (1948) starring Jimmy Stewart. Technicolor, in real time and using innovative long takes, this film portrays two former students of housemaster Rupert Cadell (Stewart) after they kill a man and invite dinner guests over, including Cadell, thinking to impress them with the artful murder. Hitchcock hired Stewart for four of his best films, including "Rear Window" and "Vertigo". But it was Cary Grant, also the star of 4 of his films, that Hitchcock called "The only actor I've ever loved in my whole life". Of course, Hitchcock gave himself a cameo in each of his movies, so perhaps his preferred actor was himself.

80. It was 1989 before I finally watched an Academy Award-winning film in flight. In which 1988 film did we find out that Melanie Griffith had "a head for business and a 'bod' for sin"?

From Quiz Films on Planes

Answer: Working Girl

"Working Girl" was released in late 1988, and I saw it on a flight to Atlanta several months later. In the film, Melanie Griffith played Tess McGill, the secretary for conniving Katharine Parker (Sigourney Weaver). When McGill realized that Parker had planned to pass off one of her (McGill's) ideas as her own, McGill decided to make her own presentation to management with the help of Parker's quasi-boyfriend (Harrison Ford). The film was nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Picture, and it won for its theme song, Carly Simon's "Let the River Run".

81. Subtitled "Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan", what 2006 film starred Sacha Baron Cohen, in-character, traveling across the U.S.?

From Quiz One-Word Movie Titles [2]

Answer: Borat

Certainly a 'very good time', "Borat" poked fun at American customs as Cohen, in character, traveled around the States filming his alleged documentary. In reality, Borat was one of the lesser-known characters on Cohen's reality-TV show "Da Ali G Show" in which he played characters created to satirize and expose interviewed subjects. The movie came to a climax when Borat arrived at a book signing to kidnap Pamela Anderson in his marriage sack. The movie became extremely popular and oft-quoted in the years following its release. It made well over $250,000,000 in the box office.

82. What movie would these clues lead you to: Sharks, three deaths, and the line "Te adoro Anton."?

From Quiz Can You Name This Movie in Three Clues?

Answer: West Side Story

"West Side Story" was a musical based on "Romeo and Juliet". There were two gangs - the Sharks and the Jets. The Jets were all white Americans, the Sharks were all Puerto Rican-Americans. Tony, one of the Jets, fell in love with Maria, a sister of the Shark named Bernardo. They were talking about when they would get together when Maria got called inside by her father. Maria asked, "What does Tony stand for?" Tony replied, "Anton." She then said, "Te adoro, Anton." Tony then went to break up a rumble between the two gangs. However, while trying to do this, Riff, the leader of the Jets, was killed by Bernardo. Tony saw this and went after Bernardo, not planning to kill him, but he accidentally did. Later on, Chino, Maria's boyfriend before Tony, came along, looking for revenge. Tony, who thought Maria no longer was alive, told Chino to come and get him. Just as Maria appeared, Chino fired a gun, killing Tony.

83. Name the movie: River Phoenix; Central America; 1986; Mother Fox (character)?

From Quiz Name That Movie: Downward Spiral With A Twist

Answer: The Mosquito Coast

"The Mosquito Coast" (1986) was adapted from the novel of the same name by Paul Theroux. It was the story of the Fox family who left the United States to build a Utopian society (which failed) in the jungles of Central America. It starred Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren and River Phoenix. Harrison Ford said in 1992 that it was only one of his movies that did not make its money back. He thought the reason for this was that the movie did not highlight the language of the book and that maybe it was a literary rather than cinematic event. The other answer options are all Oscar nominees for Best Picture in the same year as "Mosquito Coast" was released.

84. Which 2004 'rom-com' stars the following actors, Chad Michael Murray, Hilary Duff, Jennifer Coolidge and Regina King?

From Quiz Match the Movie

Answer: A Cinderella Story

'A Cinderella Story' is about a waitress named Sam (Duff) whose dad passed away when she was young. Sam then has to live with her 'evil' stepmother (Coolidge). She talks online, through an anonymous chat room, to a fellow student from her school and starts to fall for him. They agree to meet up at the high school masquerade dance, where she finds out that she has been talking to Austin (Murray), the very popular star football player.

85. Vincent Vega's only real motivation in this 1994 film was to complete the job for his boss. This of course, involved transporting a briefcase, the contents of which we never saw. Why? Did it matter? What's the movie's name?

From Quiz Strange Motives

Answer: Pulp Fiction

Winner of the Cannes Palme d'Or and nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, "Pulp Fiction" was a gritty, postmodern film composed of several different stories and led by an all-star cast. While many of the stories intersected and made sense on a basic level, character motivations were often quite hazy. The briefcase, for instance, was simply a MacGuffin-- the audience was never supposed to know what was inside and why it was so important to the film. Further, characters made horrible rash decisions. Uma Thurman's Mia Wallace, for example, ended up taking unknown drugs 'just because', and required a shot of adrenaline to the heart to survive. Sigh. "Pulp Fiction" contained one of the more popular MacGuffins, but films have used this odd plot device for decades, often to hide a truth that could either be completely irrelevant to a plot or extremely integral to its understanding if fully understood... though it never is seen. The briefcase could've contained anything from money to Bibles; it wouldn't have affected the plot.

86. In this movie Major Archie Gates uses a ceasefire during the Gulf War to find a treasure of gold, purportedly hidden in one of Saddam Hussein's secret bunkers. What is the movie's title?

From Quiz The Title Counts

Answer: Three Kings

A small group of soldiers, stationed in Iraq and led by Archie Gates, learn of a secret cache of gold in one of Saddam Hussein's bunkers. After finding a map which might eventually lead them to that hoard of treasure, they set out on the journey to wealth. 'Three Kings' is a movie from 1999 set in the Gulf War of 1991 and starring George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg and Ice Cube. The film was received fairly well by the audience and was re-released in 2004 when events in the Iraq region made the producers feel that the film was becoming relevant once more.

87. This 2007 film about Spartan soldiers was set around the year 480 B.C., and not the number given in its title (which actually referred to the number of men in its featured battalion). What was the movie's name?

From Quiz Far in Time

Answer: 300

Based on a graphic novel written by Frank Miller, "300" featured King Leonidas' Spartan army as they led the charge against evil invader Xerxes' massive forces. Despite their historical loss on the battlefield, the movie followed the noble warriors in a number of their gruesome, stylized exploits. The film sparked an immense interest in the adaptation of graphic novels (including Miller's "The Spirit" and "Sin City", and Alan Moore's "Watchmen") and became star Gerard Butler's most famous early role. Director Zack Snyder went on to film the equally-stylized "Watchmen" and "Sucker Punch"; "300" made over $450,000,000 internationally.

88. The "First Blood/Rambo" Franchise In which film did U.S. Army Col. Samuel Trautman respond to the statement by Sheriff Will Teasle, "Whatever possessed God in heaven to make a man like Rambo?" by stating, "God didn't make Rambo, I made him"?

From Quiz In Which Movie or Sequel Did That Happen?

Answer: First Blood

It all started in 1982 with the film "First Blood". The character John Rambo, a troubled former U.S. Army special forces Vietnam War veteran, afflicted with Post traumatic Stress Disorder was introduced. Rambo, a loner, wandered into the quiet town of Hope, Washington, and is shortly thereafter arrested by the local sheriff as a vagrant. While being processed by the local deputies at the sheriff office, Rambo is abused by the staff because of his failure to speak or cooperate. When one deputy attempts to dry shave him while he is being restrained by other deputies, Rambo experiences a flashback from when he was being tortured after being captured by North Vietnamese soldiers, breaks free, injures several deputies, and escapes. Sheriff Will Teasle (Brian Dennehy), who was not present during the assault, organizes a search for Rambo in the woods surround the town. The tactics used by the deputies proved to be no match for the skills of the experienced special forces trained Rambo. Rambo attempts to convince his pursuers that they are no match for him, using non-lethal means to show their inexperience. Teasle, while at the search command post and perplexed as to how one man could seemingly defeat his trained deputies, laments, "Whatever possessed God in heaven to make a man like Rambo?" The reply comes from Colonel Sam Trautman (Richard Crenna), a recent arrival to the command post. "God didn't make Rambo, I made him". Trautman, attired in his military uniform further explains the Rambo was trained to be a killing machine. When questioned by Teasle as to why he was sent by the army, Trautman replied, "I don't think you understand, I didn't come to rescue Rambo from you, I came here to rescue you from him". Trautman further explained that Rambo was an expert in guerrilla warfare, an expert in using weapons and his bare hands to engage his enemies, and that he was trained and conditioned to ignore pain and weather, to live off the land, and "eat things that would make a billy goat puke". Rambo eventually turned himself in to Col. Trautman after causing a little additional havoc on the corrupt law officials and small town, and survived to fight another day ... specifically in three movie sequels. Sylvester Stallone starred as John Rambo in four action/thriller films: "First Blood" (1982), Rambo: First Blood II" (1985), "Rambo III" (1988), and "Rambo" (2008).

89. Tom Bombadil was a character cut out of what film series featuring Merry, Pippin, Sam, and Frodo?

From Quiz Now Cut That Out!

Answer: The Lord of the Rings

"The Lord of the Rings" series, spread over three films in the 2000s, was based on the books of the same names as written by J. R. R. Tolkien. Directed by Peter Jackson, it followed the epic journeys and battles featuring a fellowship sent across Middle Earth to destroy a ring of immeasurable power. Adapting the work was a feat in itself; Tolkien's prose has always been highly-detailed. In fact, it's been said that Sean Connery was originally approached for the role of Gandalf but backed out because the script was too complicated. This role was taken on by Sir Ian McKellan. Tom Bombadil was featured in the first book in the trilogy but left out of the movie entirely, possibly because he was somewhat crazy. Not insane, per se, but he tended to bounce around singing songs and stealing the hobbits' clothes. It's the type of light-hearted stuff you'd expect to see in a movie about war and suffering, right? Right? Tolkien himself thought that the Bombadil character didn't fit too well in the grander scheme of the book and called him a symbol of pacifism (the character was written during World War II, many years before the book was finished) and a nature spirit figure.

Answer: Cast Away

"Cast Away" is a 2000 drama directed by Robert Zemeckis, and starring Tom Hanks. The film revolves around Chuck Noland, a FedEx employee, who becomes stranded on an island after his plane crashes in the Pacific Ocean. In the film, we watch Chuck as he attempts to survive on the island and watch how being alone and stranded affects him and his mind. The plane crashes into the ocean during a violent storm. Chuck (played by Tom Hanks) finds a raft then blackouts until he is awoken on a shore of a deserted island. During his stay on the island, packages from his plane wash up on shore. As he works for FedEx, all the packages are FedEx packages. Among the many packages he finds a Wilson Sporting Goods volleyball. During one of his first nights, Chuck attempts to make a fire, but injures his hand instead. As his hand bleeds, he gets frustrated and throws things, including the volleyball. Later, he sees a bloody hand print imprinted on the volleyball that resembles a face. He then names the volleyball "Wilson" and talks to it often, as it becomes his only friend. One thing Chuck managed to keep after the plane crash was a watch given to him by his girlfriend Kelly. At the end of the film, when he is rescued, he returns the watch to her because it was her family's heirloom but keeps the picture of her that was inside. He confesses later that the watch and her picture kept him alive.
