"The Birth of a Nation" was originally titled "The Clansmen". It is considered one of the classic American silent films. D. W. Griffith, an innovator in the early days of film, directed this three hour film portraying two families during the American Civil War.

Unfortunately, it gave a negative and stereotyped portrait of black Americans and elevated the Ku Klux Klan to Robin Hood status, resulting in protests during its time. D. W. Griffith later directed "Intolerance" (1916) that urged tolerance among social groups, perhaps in an apology to the protests.

The first review I heard of the film was on a radio talk show. The reviewer had no pre-knowledge of the film and took it seriously for the first ten minutes only to realize it was a brilliant comedy packed with satire, puns, and a good measure of slapstick. Lloyd Bridges spoke this line as air traffic controller, he is overcome by the packed airplane with no pilot. Surely the plane must be saved, but don't call me Shirley.
