The film centres around a socially awkward young man named Beauregard Decker, and his friend Virgil Blessing. Taking a bus to compete in a rodeo, Blessing encourages Decker to take an interest in women. On their journey they meet Cherie (Monroe), a singer at a café, at which point Decker falls in love with her. After sharing a kiss, he believes they are destined to get married, however Cherie pours cold water on Decker's hopes for them both. Despite this snub, the enamoured Decker tries to persuade Cherie they were meant to be together.

During the race though, McQueen's thoughts are on other things, until rival car Chick Hicks pushes another rival off the track. This prompts McQueen to help the other car despite losing the race.

Although offered a sponsorship deal for his actions, McQueen declines, deciding to return to Radiator Springs and help put the town back on the map.

The film itself is centred around a war correspondent (Lt. Werner) who is assigned to U-96 under the command of a captain also known as "The Old Man". As the film progresses, Werner learns about the mental strain placed upon the submariners, trapped in their U-boat when under attack and knowing they have little chance to escape.
