Fictional Movie Places Trivia Quiz

In 2004, shandybang wrote a quiz about fictional places in movies. Had the match quiz format existed then, it would have been a perfect fit for their quiz; so let's make it so.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Toontown - Bob Hoskins (1988)

Answer: Who Framed Roger Rabbit

Bob Hoskins plays private investigator Eddie Valiant in this ground-breaking special effects film (blending live action and animation together almost seamlessly) about a rabbit that gets accused of murder. This is not at all easy for Eddie, who has held a grudge against all toons after his brother's murder five year prior.

After discovering the real plot and who is behind it, Eddie regains his trust of the 'toons (thank you, Roger!) and happily coexists with them in Toontown once again.
2. Flesh City - Haley Joel Osment (2001)

Answer: AI: Artificial Intelligence

Haley Joel Osment plays David, a robot boy (known as a mecha) with a unique ability to love. He is placed with a family who has a son in suspended animation due to illness; and his 'mother', Monica, learns to love the robot child as her own. This is until her human son, Martin, recovers from his disease and gets into a fight with David.

As a robot, he is found to be a danger and sent away (Monica, who had grown to love him as her own, did not send him for destruction, but instead to a scrap metal land full of other mechas so he would not be alone). Given his ability to love, David determines he wants to be a real boy, and, just like Pinocchio, sets off to find the Blue Fairy to help him do so. Alas, his search is in vain, but that doesn't mean he wasn't able to spend one final day with his human mother, Monica; albeit 2,000 years into the future via a recreation of her.
3. Harper, Connecticut - Orson Welles (1946)

Answer: The Stranger

Mr Wilson is an agent set out to find a Nazi war criminal, Franz Kindler, whose true identity has been erased. The only piece of evidence to his identity is a bizarre love of clocks. Mr. Wilson finds himself in the small town of Harper, where he meets Professor Rankin. Though he is unaware at first, a passing comment about Karl Marx as well as a fondness for fixing the town's main clock indicates that Rankin (played by Orson Welles) is indeed Franz Kindler. Rankin's wife was also unaware of this; and, now torn between the love she developed with him and the desire to learn more and take down the war criminal, she must make a brave choice.
4. Twin Pines Mall - Michael J. Fox (1985)

Answer: Back to the Future

Marty McFly is a high schooler with an eccentric friend; Emmett "Doc" Brown. One night, Doc invites Marty to the parking lot of Twin Pines Mall, where he has a surprise to show him. When there, Doc shows him a DeLorean, which he has modified into a time machine. Throughout the film, we see Marty go back and forth between the modern 1985 mall and the past where he meets his mother and father. Of course, as time traveling can be dangerous, many events cause changes back in the future, and we see Twin Pines Mall frequently with new updates (including a gag where the destruction of an early tree in 1955 causes a rename to "Lone Pine Mall"). "Back to the Future" is often regarded as one of the greatest films of all time; with a combination of excellent story-telling, fantastic acting and impeccable twists and turns, I tend to agree with critics' assessment.
5. Fiorina 161 - Sigourney Weaver (1992)

Answer: Alien 3

The events of "Alien 3" take place shortly after "Aliens", and begins with an egg hatching on the ship, wreaking havoc on the crew in stasis. The computer ejects Ripley in an escape pod, and she becomes the only survivor when she crashes on the prison planet, Fiorina 161 (also called "Fury").

A xenomorph has followed her to this planet, and now she must deal with yet another threatening facehugger. Curiously, in one scene, Ripley's life is spared by the alien. We found out later alongside Ripley why she was spared; the Alien Queen embryo had been implanted inside of her. Though some begged her to let them surgically removed the embryo and destroy it, she knew there really was only one way the aliens would truly be vanquished.

She leapt into a furnace, destroying the Alien Queen alongside herself.
6. Santa Carla - Cory Feldman (1987)

Answer: The Lost Boys

Sam and Michael are two teenagers who move to Santa Carla, California with their mother; unaware that this is a town overrun with vampires. After Michael begins showing signs of becoming a vampire himself, Sam and two of his friends set out to find and destroy the head vampire, as destroying it could reverse the process.

They have to be quick, though; Michael is already developing a desire for human blood, and one taste will make the transformation complete.
7. Sogo - Jane Fonda (1968)

Answer: Barbarella

Jane Fonda stars as Barbarella, a futuristic space adventure sent on a quest to stop the evil Durand Durand; who is hiding somewhere in the Tau Ceti planetary system. Barbarella is taken to Sogo, the city where Durand Durand was supposedly housing his destructive weaponry.

Here she is taken by a concierge who traps her in the "Excessive Machine". She survives the encounter, which destroys the device, much to the concierge's dismay. He then reveals himself to be the very one who she was looking for; an aged 25-year-old (the side effects of the machine caused rapid aging).

The movie did not perform well at the time, but gained a cult following. If the villainous Durand Durand sounds at all familiar; yes, the band Duran Duran was indeed inspired by this film for their band name.
8. East Great Falls High - Jason Biggs (1999)

Answer: American Pie

After another student loses his virginity, four friends decide it is their turn to do the same, and make a pact to do so before prom night three weeks later. Three of the friends, however, determine that it is naïve of them to do so just for the sake of it, and on prom night, decide they did not want to lose their virginity.

After learning that the first was lying about his experience, they reconcile.
9. Captain Stu's Space-O-Rama - Ashton Kutcher (2000)

Answer: Dude, Where's My Car?

Following a night of adventure and drinking, two friends wake up hungover with no recollection of the evening. They discover that their vehicle is missing, and in it, the anniversary gifts for their twin girlfriends. Retracing their steps, they meet all sorts of zany characters, and in a twist you wouldn't expect if you didn't know the film, two sets of aliens; one group bent on destroying the universe, and one on saving it. Fortunately for the title, they do eventually find their car (and save the universe).
10. Mega-City One - Sylvester Stallone (1995)

Answer: Judge Dredd

In a futuristic wasteland of a now "Cursed Earth", people have gathered in overpopulated safe zones called "Mega-Cities". These safe zones may keep them safe from the Cursed Earth's deadly air, but crime runs rampant, and they have put in places Judges to act as law enforcement.

Despite dwindling Judge numbers and higher crime rates, a fellow Judge presumed to be executed by Dredd's order returns and disguises himself as Dredd to incriminate him with murder. Now, Judge Dredd must stop his once fellow Judge and best friend, Rico, from killing even more Judges, all the while escaping arrest and trying to clear his own name.
