Christmas Music for Experts Trivia Questions

1. Which Christmas song encourages people who are 93 or older to celebrate Hanukkah?

From Quiz
Things Implied in Christmas Songs

Answer: The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)

"And so I'm offering this simple phrase to kids from 1 to 92 although it's been said many times many ways Merry Christmas to you." So if you're 93 or older, don't have a merry Christmas. Celebrate Hanukkah instead. The song was written in 1945 by Mel Torme.

2. Which ancient hymn based on a Biblical prophecy from Isaiah 7:14, was used in advent services as early as the eighth century?

From Quiz Hymn Stories: Christmas 2

Answer: O Come, O Come, Emmanuel

"O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" as we know it today was translated from Latin in about 1850 by John Mason Neale and Henry Sloane Coffin. Originally known as "Veni, Veni Emmanuel" it was used during the season of advent as a meditation on seven of the Biblical names attributed to Christ. 1. Emmanuel "God with us" - "Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel." (Isaiah 7:14 New International Version) 2.Wisdom from on High 3.Lord of might 4.Rod of Jesse's stem 5.Key of David 6.Dayspring from on high 7.Desire of nations

3. Which country singer composed Roy Orbison's signature holiday song, "Pretty Paper"?

From Quiz Time for Some Christmas Music Trivia

Answer: Willie Nelson

Texas native Willie Nelson relocated to Nashville in 1960 and began making a name for himself as a songwriter before he began a prolific recording career. Among his earliest songwriting credits were "Crazy", "Family Bible", "Funny How Time Slips Away", "Hello Walls" and "Pretty Paper". Willie signed with Monument Records before working with RCA where he met fellow Monument recording artist Roy Orbison. Roy recorded "Pretty Paper" in 1963 and it became Roy's holiday hit. In 1961 Willie Nelson released his first successful single, "Willingly". In 1964 he switched to RCA Records. He released his first RCA album, "Country Willie - His Own Songs" and became a member of the Grand Ole Opry the same year. Don Gibson was known for such hits as "Just One More Time". Merle Haggard wrote and recorded "If We Make it Through December" and "Christmas with Marty Robbins" was a 1967 album release.

4. While not specifically a Christmas song, this 1949 song is usually associated with the holiday season. Its title has something to do with a very sweet treat (you can roast them over a fire). Name the song.

From Quiz Songs of Christmas

Answer: A Marshmallow World

Carl Sigman wrote the lyrics and Peter DeRose composed the music in 1949. Many famous singers have graced us with their versions of "Marshmallow World." Some of the earliest recordings were by Bing Crosby and Vic Damone. Later, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and my personal favorite, Johnny Mathis, provided their own unique versions.

The song is sung when all the kids are being served Hot Chocolate by train workers on their way to the North Pole.

6. What has been proposed as the hidden purpose of the song "The Twelve Days of Christmas"?

From Quiz The Twelve Days of Christmas

Answer: it is a memory aid to help young children learn the important tenets of the Christian faith

It is widely (if only recently) claimed on the internet that "The Twelve Days of Christmas" was written to help pass on the faith within Christian communities in times of persecution. Details of the communities and times vary. One version of the story states that it was more specifically English Catholics who were concerned with covertly training children during the period between 1588 and 1829, when the practice of Catholicism was illegal. Each verse of the song has a special message for those who know how to read the hidden meaning.

7. In 1975, Greg Lake of Emerson, Lake & Palmer released a song titled 'I Believe in ___ ___". What two words complete this song title?

From Quiz Wannabe

Answer: Father Christmas

Ironically, Greg Lake, whose only solo hit single this is, wrote "I Believe in Father Christmas" as a protest against what he saw as the commercialisation of Christmas. Although it peaked at number two in the UK charts, it was a commercial success. The song which pipped this one to the post was Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody", a song which repeated this success in 1991.

8. Band Aid was known for releasing this song in 1984 to raise money for charity. What was its name?

From Quiz Jingle Bell Rock

Answer: Do They Know It's Christmas?

One of the best-selling singles in the UK, "Do They Know It's Christmas?" sold millions of copies after its release. The group, Band Aid, was notable for having a certain amount of star power. Performers from U2, Genesis, Duran Duran, Bananarama, Kool and the Gang, and The Police (and many others) turned out for the single which raised money to feed hungry Ethiopian children for Christmas. The song knocked Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" off the chart as Britain's most popular song and it held the title for fourteen years until Elton John's "Candle in the Wind" in 1997. Band Aid has reappeared on other different occasions with new members from contemporary music scenes.

9. What youthfully named group sang "Christmas In Jail"?

From Quiz Bah Humbug! (10 Ways to Ruin Christmas)

Answer: The Youngsters

"Christmas In Jail" was recorded by The Youngsters. The group formed in 1955 when Charles Everidge met Homer Green, Don Miller, Harold Murray and James Monroe Warren at a party. The group was originally called The Preludes. Their record company, (Empire Records), changed their name hoping to cash in their youth. The group received a commendation letter from the National Safety Council for the don't drink and drive message of "Christmas In Jail". They eventually drifted apart due mainly to members being drafted into military service. "Christmas In Jail" can be found on the Rhino Records release "Bummed Out Christmas".

10. "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" was first debuted on whose radio show in 1934?

From Quiz You'd Better Watch Out!

He worked in radio, motion pictures and in early television shows. One of the songs he cowrote, "Merrily We Roll Along" is best remembered as the theme song for Warner Brothers "Merry Melodies" cartoon series. Cantor also coined the name "March of Dimes" and opened the first "March of Dimes" campaign in January 1938 by asking his radio listeners to send a dime to President Franklin Roosevelt, (who was a victm of polio). The White House received 2,680,000 dimes as a result of the broadcast.

14. "Do They Know It's Christmas?" first topped the UK charts in December 1984. Whose was the first voice heard on that original version?

From Quiz Band Aid - 1, 2 and 20

Answer: Paul Young

The Band Aid story began back in October 1984. Michael Buerk of the BBC presented a harrowing news report of people gradually starving to death in Ethiopia, which so deeply moved Boomtown Rats singer Bob Geldof that he vowed to try and do something to help. Together with Ultravox vocalist Midge Ure, Bob set about writing the song that would be the start of something very big - a song that would both touch and help millions of people. Bob and Midge galvanized the top recording artists of the day to sing on "Do They Know It's Christmas?" and the Band Aid legend was on its way with that first recording on 25th November 1984. The single's picture sleeve was designed by artist Peter Blake, the man responsible for the cover of The Beatles album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band".

15. What song does Christine Anu sing on the SOC '95? (Hint: an earthy adaptation of "The Little Drummer Boy")

25. Which very popular bluesy garage rock duo, who formed in Detroit in 1997, released a Christmas single entitled 'Candy Cane Children' in 2002?

From Quiz An Alternative Music Christmas Part Two

Answer: The White Stripes

Jack and Meg White formed The White Stripes in 1997 and went on to record a number of highly acclaimed albums and singles. As well as being critically acclaimed, The White Stripes have also enjoyed considerable commercial success with their albums reaching the top of albums charts all over the world. Songs such as 'Seven Nation Army', 'Fell In Love With A Girl' and 'Hotel Yorba' have become modern rock classics. When The White Stripes first came to more widespread attention in the early 2000s, there was much speculation in the media as to the duo's relationship to one another. Jack and Meg claimed to be siblings, though it turned out that the couple had married in the mid 1990s, with Jack White, born Jack Gillis, taking his wife's surname. The couple divorced in 2000 but remained friends and band mates. 'Candy Cane Children' is quite a slow, downbeat track, but it is very atmospheric and would fit well on the soundtrack to a more low-key Christmas cocktail party.

26. Direct testimony . . . Case #14-57239 . . "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" The big guy in the red suit conducted surveillance activities throughout the year. Which activity did he not directly monitor?

Santa did not observe the children while at play, but he knew about their games and activities. The correct answers can be found in the third verse of the song: "He sees you when you're sleeping, He knows when you're awake, He knows if you've been bad or good, So be good for goodness sake!".

27. "O come let us adore Him, O come let us adore Him, O come let us adore Him, Christ the Lord." This chorus is from what well known Christmas hymn?

From Quiz Hymn Stories: Christmas 2

Answer: O Come, All Ye Faithful

The authorship of this song is uncertain. It was first written in Latin as "Adeste Fidelis". John Francis Wade, a calligrapher, put this hymn in with a manuscript he copied for a college in Lisbon, Portugal. Thirty years later it was sent to the Portuguese Chapel in London and was called "Portuguese Hymn". Source of this information is from "The complete Book of Hymns" William J. Peterson and Ardythe Peterson. Frederick Oakeley is credited with the English translation of "O Come, All Ye Faithful".

28. Which Christmas classic was recorded by Brenda Lee in 1958?

From Quiz Time for Some Christmas Music Trivia

Answer: Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree

Johnny Marks composed "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" which was recorded by Brenda Lee in 1958. The song was not an immediate success and Decca Records re-released it during the 1959 and 1960 Christmas seasons and it finally took off, becoming an enduring Rock and Roll Christmas song that has been featured on several movie soundtracks. Marks specialized in writing Christmas songs and composed "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer", "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" and several other Yule time standards. He was also the director of ASCAP between 1957 and 1961. "Christmas Island" was made popular by The Andrews Sisters. Bobby Helms had a hit with "Jingle Bell Rock" and "Christmas Alphabet" was a 1954 release by The McGuire Sisters.
