41. Which English rock band with a very generic name released the single "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore" from their 1985 album "Meat Is Murder"?

From Quiz I Whistle a Happy Tune

Answer: The Smiths

The single itself managed to reach position 49 on the UK Singles chart and position 20 on the Irish charts, but did not do as well as the actual album "Meat Is Murder which reached top spot on the UK Albums chart. The album managed a respectable twenty-ninth position on the European Top 100 Albums chart and featured in the top 200 of the US Billboard 200 chart. The single's artwork comes from a still of a 1964 Soviet fantasy film, "The Enchanted Desna". Which is fortunate, as lead singer Morrisey wanted an image of a dead chicken on the single's sleeve. The Smiths formed in 1982 with singer Morrisey and prolific guitarist Johnny Marr. They recorded four studio albums between 1984 and 1987, managing to have all four albums chart at number one on the UK Indie charts and in either first or second place on the UK Album charts. Elvis charted over 100 singles on the top fifty in Australia with eleven number ones, seven number twos, and six number three hits. The source for this information is from "The Book-Top 40 Research" by Barnes and Scanes. "The Book" collates information from top forty lists published by various radio stations and information from "The Kent Report".

44. Stevie Wonder's song "Superstition" was released in 1972. Which musical instrument provided the song's unique sound?

From Quiz Music To My Ears

Answer: clavinet

Invented by Ernst Zacharias in 1964, a clavinet is an electrically amplified clavichord, a stringed keyboard instrument used primarily from the Middle Ages through the Classical periods of music. The clavinet is a keyboard with short strings which are in turn struck by a piece of metal when a key is pressed. The vibrations create a percussive sound which can sometimes replace a guitar in rock music. The range of the clavinet is five octaves.

45. According to a "Rolling Stone" interview, how did the group Nickelback come up with their name?

From Quiz 50 Cent/Nickelback Concert Tickets Cost 45 Cents

Answer: From a band member giving a nickel back in change at Starbucks

Before they hit it big, Mike Kroeger, the bass player of the band used to work at Starbucks in Canada. According to a 2007 article in "Rolling Stone" magazine, if a product at Starbucks had cost some odd Canadian dollars and 95 cents and a customer gave Kroeger a dollar amount rounded up, Kroeger routinely said "Here's your nickel back." The band later made a music video called "Trying Not To Love You" that hearkened back to the days of that Starbucks job by featuring mocha soy drinks, and actor Jason Alexander as a barista.

46. In "Love Potion Number Nine", what distinguishing feature did the gypsy have on her face?

From Quiz Help My Ear Worm, Please!

Answer: A gold-capped tooth

The first two lines of this song rhyme. The first line discusses the gypsy Madame Ruth. The second line describes her with a gold-capped tooth. Thomas Zumbroich (2010) found that the capping of teeth with gold for cosmetic purposes goes back thousands of years. There is archeological evidence from the Philippines of gold decorations on teeth that dates back to the 1300s CE. Scientists have also found gold dental appliances that were used by the Etruscan people of Italy as far back as the 600s BCE. It seems that Madame Ruth was right in style. The first two lines of this song go: "I took my troubles down to Madame Ruth You know that gypsy with the gold-capped tooth"

47. Who was the lead singer in The Drifters 1958-1960, who later had a solo number one hit on the UK Singles Chart in 1987?

From Quiz A Potpourri of Pop III

Answer: Ben E. King

Ben E. King was the lead singer with The Drifters, when they had their biggest hit "Save The Last Dance For Me" in 1960. "Stand By Me" written by Ben E. King/Jerry Leiber/Mike Stoller, peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 for Ben E. King in 1961. It peaked at number 27 on the UK Singles Chart the same year. The song was featured on the soundtrack of the 1986 movie of the same name starring Richard Dreyfuss, Kiefer Sutherland, River Phoenix and Wil Wheaton. It also featured in a 1987 European commercial for Levi's 501 jeans. Re-released as a single, "Stand By Me" peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1986 and was number one for three weeks on the UK Singles Chart in 1987.

48. In 2012, my husband and I went to an Arlo Guthrie concert. What was his most famous, and longest song?

From Quiz My Favourite Concerts

Answer: Alice's Restaurant

In 1965, Guthrie and his friend dumped a bunch of garbage outside the landfill when they found that it was closed for the Thanksgiving weekend. They were caught, charged with littering, and found guilty of the charge. He subsequently wrote a song about the incident, called "Alice's Restaurant Masacree", or "Alice's Restaurant" as it is more commonly known. The song is 18 minutes and 34 seconds long (on the first recorded version), and tells the story of the littering event and of how when the singer was called up for the Vietnam draft, he was declared unfit for service because of the littering conviction on his record. This was a really enjoyable night of folk music.

49. "I Can't Make You Love Me" was co-written by what American composer, country music artist, and former Cincinnati Bengals football player?

From Quiz Song by Song: "I Can't Make You Love Me"

Answer: Mike Reid

Mike Reid, who released three country music studio albums of his own, co-wrote the song with Allen Shamblin, a country music songwriter and musician who was born in Tennessee and raised in Texas. Reid spent five seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals and retired after the 1974 season.

50. Who had a number one hit in 1964 with "The House Of The Rising Sun"?

From Quiz Songs liked by The Misplaced Team

Answer: The Animals

"The House Of The Rising Sun" is a traditional song and it's origins are unknown. It was number one for one week on the UK Singles Chart for The Animals in 1964, (Columbia DB 7301, 4:29). It was number one for three weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 the same year (MGM 13264, 2:58). "The House Of The Rising Sun" was recorded in one take and it was The Animals' only UK & US number one hit. Alan Price was the only member of The Animals named on the record so the arranging credit went to him as did the songwriting royalties. This rankled with the rest of the group ever after. Price left the group in 1965 due to personal and musical differences, his fear of flying was one of the reasons he left. The Animals were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. Question submitted by boof123

51. "Pinball Wizard" was written by Pete Townshend and featured on the 1969 rock opera album "Tommy"."What group sang it?

From Quiz Name The Group Or Person

Answer: The Who

The Who was formed in London in 1964. Lead singer was Roger Daltrey, and Pete Townshend was the famous singer and guitarist. They wrote and produced many of their songs, most famous for their score in "Tommy". The band was awarded Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and is now in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in Cleveland, Ohio.

52. Verse 3 of which song contains the lyrics, "Stay with me while we grow old, And we will live each day in Springtime"?

From Quiz Songs I Hate That Everyone Else Loves

Answer: Lovin' You

Keeping with the title of this quiz, this is another song I really disliked. Recorded by the talented Minnie Riperton, whose vocal ability was amazing, this song is probably a favorite of many. For the few out there who are unaware, Minnie was the mother of Maya Rudolph. In fact, Minnie chants, "Maya, Maya, Maya", at the end of the song in the unedited and album versions. The song was recorded in 1975, and sadly one year later Ms Riperton was diagnosed with breast cancer and passed away in 1979 at the age of 31. RIP Minnie.

53. Who brought you the tale of "Surfer Joe"?

From Quiz A Potpourri of Pop II

Answer: The Surfaris

"Down in Doheny where the surfers all go There's a big beach blondie, named Surfer Joe He's got a green surfboard and a Woody to match And when he's ridin' the freeway's Man, is he hard to catch" "Surfer Joe" written by Ron Wilson peaked at number 62 on the Billboard Hot 100 for The Surfaris in 1963. It did not chart on the UK Singles Chart. "Surfer Joe" was the B-Side of "Wipeout" which peaked at number two in 1963 and at number 16 in 1966. It was The Surfaris only Top 20 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and it was their only hit on the UK Singles Chart where it peaked at number five in 1963.

54. Coming in at number nine on my all time list of bad songs is "The Final Countdown" which went to number one in a few countries. Which Swedish Glam-Metal group sang this synth-driven song?

From Quiz Hum? Don't Do That

Answer: Europe

The Eighties have a lot to answer for. Synthesizers were bigger than hair in the 80s and that's saying something. The Glam Rock of the 70s morphed into Glam-Metal, a genre that fused two perfectly sound (pun intended) genres into a non-workable new format. "The Final Countdown" was far, far away from being a good song but those synth hooks ensured chart success. Then just when it was safe to go back to the airwaves, the song featured in an insurance commercial where a man patiently waited for his lunch to finish heating in a microwave (which must be one step more exciting than watching paint dry). The song was synced to the microwave counting down the seconds.

55. Rod Stewart's "Atlantic Crossing" album, containing many great songs, was released in 1975. Which song, related to the album title, reached number one in the UK in the same year?

From Quiz Greatest Songs, Team Pick

Answer: Sailing

"Sailing" was originally released in 1972, composed by Gavin Sutherland of the Sutherland Brothers. Unfortunately for the brothers, the song was not successful. However, when Rod Stewart did his 1975 version, it became a number one hit in the UK, and remained there for four weeks. The album "Atlantic Crossing" also reached number one in the UK and number nine on the Billboard ratings. Led Zeppelin sang, "The Ocean", a single on their 1973 album "Houses of the Holy". The Beach Boys sang, "Sail on Sailor" and it was on the 1973 album "Holland". The great Ozzie Osbourne sang "Flying High Again" which was a track on his 1981 album "Diary of a Madman". -Jane57 authored this question.

56. Which English punk and new wave singer recorded an album of country songs entitled "Almost Blue" in 1981?

From Quiz On The Jukebox

Answer: Elvis Costello

Like his previous four albums, this one went top ten in UK where country music is not as well known as in the USA. In the States, "Almost Blue" only reached number 50 and the main single from the album, "Good Year For The Roses" didn't chart there, but did get as high as number six in UK. "Good Year For The Roses" was originally recorded by George Jones in 1970.

57. Although perhaps best-remembered as a great songwriter, which female solo artist scored her only U.S. Billboard Hot 100 number one single as a singer with the 1971 double A-side "It's Too Late/I Feel the Earth Move"?

From Quiz A Veritable Mix of Music

Answer: Carole King

The single came from her 1971 album, "Tapestry", which for over 20 years held the record for the longest stay at the top of the U.S. album chart by a female solo artist. She was inducted into the Hall of Fame (of which the three alternatives are also members) in 1987.

58. What song did not became a hit until the music reality show "American Idol" started using it as the exit music for singers voted off the show?

From Quiz Key Facts about Known Songs

Answer: "Bad Day" (Daniel Powter)

After "American Idol" started using the song, it reached number one on 'Billboard song of the Year'. Daniel Powter is also the first performer to have a Billboard hit and never have another hit after it.

59. And the answer is, Roy Orbison. What is the question?

From Quiz And The Answer Is, What Is The Question?

Answer: Which singer who had a US number one hit with "Running Scared" in 1961 made a chart comeback in 1989?

"Running Scared" was written by Roy Orbison/Joe Melson. It was number one for one week on the Billboard Hot 100 for Roy Orbison in 1961. It peaked at number nine on the UK singles chart the same year. Roy Orbison was born Roy Kelton Orbison in Vernon, Texas, USA, in 1936. He died of a heart attack in Hendersonville, Tennessee, USA, in 1988 aged 52. He first made the Billboard Top 100 with "Ooby Dooby" which peaked at number 59 in 1956. Between 1960 and 1989 he had ten Top Ten hits on the Billboard Hot 100 which included two number one hits. "Runaway" was number one for four weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 for Del Shannon in 1961. "Travelin' Man" was number one for two weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 for Ricky Nelson in 1961. "Take Good Care Of My Baby" was number one for three weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 for Bobby Vee in 1961.

60. The Who recorded a song that could very easily have had the title "Once Bitten Twice Shy". What is the correct title of this 1971 classic?

From Quiz A Buzz Down Memory Lane

Answer: Won't Get Fooled Again

"Won't Get Fooled Again" was a single released in 1971 from the album "Who's Next". It reached the UK top ten in 1971, peaking at number nine. It was equally successful on the "Canadian RPM Top Singles" chart and reached number fifteen on the "US Billboard Hot 100" chart. The song has appeared on Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" and a cover version was recorded by Van Halen in 1993 and actually made it to the number one spot on the "Billboard Album Rock Tracks" chart.
