The album managed a respectable twenty-ninth position on the European Top 100 Albums chart and featured in the top 200 of the US Billboard 200 chart. The single's artwork comes from a still of a 1964 Soviet fantasy film, "The Enchanted Desna". Which is fortunate, as lead singer Morrisey wanted an image of a dead chicken on the single's sleeve. The Smiths formed in 1982 with singer Morrisey and prolific guitarist Johnny Marr. They recorded four studio albums between 1984 and 1987, managing to have all four albums chart at number one on the UK Indie charts and in either first or second place on the UK Album charts. An unbelievable eleven singles charted at number one on the UK Indie charts.

The song was featured on the soundtrack of the 1986 movie of the same name starring Richard Dreyfuss, Kiefer Sutherland, River Phoenix and Wil Wheaton. It also featured in a 1987 European commercial for Levi's 501 jeans. Re-released as a single, "Stand By Me" peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1986 and was number one for three weeks on the UK Singles Chart in 1987.

In 1965, Guthrie and his friend dumped a bunch of garbage outside the landfill when they found that it was closed for the Thanksgiving weekend. They were caught, charged with littering, and found guilty of the charge. He subsequently wrote a song about the incident, called "Alice's Restaurant Masacree", or "Alice's Restaurant" as it is more commonly known. The song is 18 minutes and 34 seconds long (on the first recorded version), and tells the story of the littering event and of how when the singer was called up for the Vietnam draft, he was declared unfit for service because of the littering conviction on his record. This was a really enjoyable night of folk music.

Alan Price was the only member of The Animals named on the record so the arranging credit went to him as did the songwriting royalties. This rankled with the rest of the group ever after. Price left the group in 1965 due to personal and musical differences, his fear of flying was one of the reasons he left. The Animals were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. For the few out there who are unaware, Minnie was the mother of Maya Rudolph. In fact, Minnie chants, "Maya, Maya, Maya", at the end of the song in the unedited and album versions. The song was recorded in 1975, and sadly one year later Ms Riperton was diagnosed with breast cancer and passed away in 1979 at the age of 31. RIP Minnie.

Then just when it was safe to go back to the airwaves, the song featured in an insurance commercial where a man patiently waited for his lunch to finish heating in a microwave (which must be one step more exciting than watching paint dry). The song was synced to the microwave counting down the seconds.
