1. A song that was a hit in 1965, "The Boy from New York City" was sung by a girl group. Can you name that group?

From Quiz
Songs With "Boy" in the Title

Answer: The AdLibs

The Ad-Libs had a one-hit wonder with "The Boy from New York City" but were not able to repeat that recording success. The song was written by George Davis and John T. Taylor. It had some interesting lyrics for its day; for example, the singer says she likes "his dueling scar" as well as "his brand new car". "The Boy from New York City" went to Number Eight on Billboard's Hot 100 in 1965, and a later version recorded by the group Manhattan Transfer hit Number Seven on the same chart in 1981.

2. This song, titled "Southern Man" (1970) elicited a response song from the American band Lynryd Skynryd. Their song was called "Sweet Home Alabama" (1974). Who sang "Southern Man"?

From Quiz Manly Melodies

Answer: Neil Young

It is often thought that the members of Lynryd Skynryd felt quite angry about the release of "Southern Man". It is true that if the lyrics of "Southern Man" are explored, they show that Neil Young was very explicit and very critical of the racism that had existed for so long in the American South. (Neil Young is a Canadian.) Much later, Young said he did not like the lyrics to "Southern Man" any more because they were too open to interpretation. The "feud" that supposedly existed between Lynryd Skynryd and Neil Young was largely imaginary. In fact, a fairly good-natured camaraderie existed between them; Ronnie Van Zant is wearing a Neil Young T-shirt on a Lynryd Skynryd album cover, and in fact Neil Young himself played "Sweet Home Alabama" at a memorial concert after the plane crash that killed three members of the other band.

3. Which man "gets up at seven" and "goes to work at nine"?

From Quiz You've Got the Wrong Man!

It also treats the phenomenon of ultra-mass communication, seeming to prefigure the time of Facebook. Here is another lyric: "Staccato signals of constant information, a loose affiliation of millionaires and billionaires..." and the chorus: " These are the days of miracles and wonders, this is the long distance call, The way the camera follows us in slo-mo, the way we look to us all..."

Answer: Ireland and Australia

The Australian version names Jack Doolan as the title character, while the Irish one has it that Jack Duggan is the boy. But actually, the narrative that is told through the song's lyrics is much the same in both versions, though some verses may be different. They both agree on the story of the legendary "boy, both mythic features such as robbing the rich to help the poor, and also quasi-historical matters: his emigration from Ireland, the other characters in the adventure. At the end, "The Wild Colonial Boy" is killed by the authorities in Australia.

"Watermelon Man" was written by Herbie Hancock and appeared on his first album, "Taking Off" in 1962. The title refers to the watermelon sellers who were common on the streets of Chicago around that time. Hancock was filling in with Mongo Santamaria's jazz band on a club date, and introduced the tune; the dancers on the floor loved it, and it has become known as one of the first, if not the first, songs with a Latin dance beat known as Latin boogaloo. The song later was put to words by lyricist Jon Hendricks, and many artists covered it. The Santamaria version of "Watermelon Man" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998.
