People in Songs Trivia Questions

1. Gordon Lightfoot wrote "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" about a shipwreck on which of the Great Lakes?

From Quiz
Songs About Actual Events and People

Answer: Superior

The Edmund Fitzgerald was a 729-foot freighter that capsized and sunk during a severe winter storm on November 10, 1975. It was a large vessel that was full of iron ore, en route to Detroit. In fact, it was the largest ship ever to sink in the Great Lakes until the end of the 20th century. Despite radioing for assistance, twenty-nine men perished in this accident. In tribute to the men who lost their lives that day, the last line of the song is "Superior, they said, never gives up her dead / When the gales of November come early."

2. "Ground Control to Major Tom Take your protein pills and put your helmet on..." Which English glam rock singer wrote and sang about an intrepid spaceman?

From Quiz Military And Police Ranks In Song

Answer: David Bowie

Major Tom was a character who first appeared in the 1969 David Bowie song "Space Oddity" and was mentioned again in other Bowie songs, "Ashes to Ashes", "Hallo Spaceboy", and "Blackstar". The inspiration for the song was the Stanley Kubrick movie "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968). In 2003 Bowie told 'Performing Songwriter' magazine: "In England, it was always presumed that it was written about the space landing, because it kind of came to prominence around the same time. But it actually wasn't. It was written because of going to see the film '2001', which I found amazing. I was out of my gourd anyway, I was very stoned when I went to see it, several times, and it was really a revelation to me." The single reached number five on the Official UK Charts Company listing. Re-released in the USA in1972, it reached number 15 on the Hot 100.

3. "She saw him singing once when she was seventeen; ever since that day she's been livin' in between." This song by John Hiatt involved a cross-country trek to Elvis's home and the results that followed. Can you spot the correct title here?

From Quiz 50 Million Elvis Presley Fans Can't be All Wrong

Answer: Tennessee Plates

In the song the singer was obsessed with "lookin' for a Cadillac with Tennessee plates." He picked up the woman referenced in the question in Nevada and they decided to head for Graceland. Upon arriving, the singer decided to help himself to one of Elvis's Cadillacs because "he gave 'em to his friends". Elvis and the police apparently disagreed with his reasoning because the singer revealed he was writing from the Tennessee state prison in Brushy Mountain, where he was serving a five-to-eight year sentence "stamping out [his] time, making Tennessee plates."

4. A hard-headed woman and a soft-hearted man have been causing trouble ever since the world began. It would take a king to point this out. Which rock and roller did so in 1958?

From Quiz Vinyl Vixens

Answer: Elvis Presley

"Hard Headed Woman", written by Claude Demetrius, was used in Elvis's 1958 movie "King Creole". It told of the problems Adam, Samson and King Ahab had with women. As a single, it went to number one in the U.S. on the "Billboard Hot 100" charts and, because of its 12-bar blues structure, number two on the "Billboard Hot R&B Singles" chart.

5. In Bryan Adams' song "Summer of '69" who quit the band?

From Quiz Characters From Classic Rock Songs

Answer: Jimmy

Bryan Adams was one of the guest artists who appeared with Roger Waters at the 1990 "The Wall in Berlin" concert that took place eight months after the wall fell.

6. "Annie's Song" was written in 1973 by which singer about his wife?

From Quiz You're the Inspiration

Answer: John Denver

John Denver, born Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr. in 1943, married Ann Martell in 1967. He came up with the outline for "Annie's Song" in about ten minutes on a ski lift in Aspen. The song was a big hit single - reaching number one in several countries. The marriage hit difficulties, with Denver allegedly attacking his wife and cutting up a bed with a chainsaw, and they divorced in the early 1980s.

Answer: Leon Trotsky

The single 'No More Heroes' by The Stranglers charted in the UK in 1977. The song listed a number of real life and literary figures including Lenny Bruce, William Shakespeare and Sancho Panza. It was covered in the television series 'Ashes to Ashes' by The Violent Femmes. In 1995 the band sued Elastica for using elements of 'No More Heroes' in their single 'Waking Up'. Elastica settled out of court. Partial lyric: 'Whatever happened to Leon Trotsky? He got an ice pick that made his ears burn Whatever happened to dear old Lenny? The Great Elmyra and Sancho Panza?'

8. Which songstress sang about "Bette Davis Eyes"?

From Quiz Sing Me Someone Famous

At the 1982 Grammy Awards the song won both Record of the Year and Song of the Year. It also topped the charts in countries such as Australia, Italy, Germany, Japan and Brazil, just to name a few, but only rose to number ten in the UK.
